I shoot a .22WMR, but I'm a bit old school.
i think the .17 HMR is a dead sexy round. At 50 yards, I'd shoot it. The main issues with the .17HMR seem to be wind drift at longer shots. Not a concern at 50.
The likelihood that you may find a nice older .22WMR are good though. I bought an older Marlin Bolt action last year from a guy for $110.

It will kill them. Probably leave one heck of a hole in the hide though. Given that it's a round primarily designed for mule deer, elk, bear etc it's a bit overkill. But it depends if you are after hides or not.
