Apparently there is NO money from the mnr to feed the deer in ontario "The decision has been made at the MNR provincial office that there will no longer be an emergency deer feeding program anywhere in the province." So where did the money go that people donated for deer feed. This winter is going to be deadly on the most herds in ontario
How much has been donated? Maybe its been used already?

License fees up, additional seals, recent elk tag lotto similar to moose, some other sector of govt. Must be getting there hands on it! MNR hasn't been in the deer yards in my area since the 90's.

When Ontario’s harsh winter weather puts our whitetail deer population in crisis, it's no coincidence that anglers and hunters come to the rescue through participation in the OFAH DeerSave emergency winter feeding program. In conjunction with the Ministry of Natural Resources, the OFAH DeerSave program was created to coordinate volunteers for breaking trails, browse cutting and emergency deer feeding in areas where high snow levels and extended periods of extreme weather could cause large-scale starvation in deer wintering areas.
Uninformed winter deer feeding can reduce the health of animals, and even kill them if it is not done properly. Anyone thinking about feeding deer should contact the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR) first. Feeding deer straight grain or corn, alfalfa, or hay can do more harm than good. Feeding under the DeerSave program takes place only under strict OMNR emergency feeding guidelines.

Todays email is sent in regards of a forum chat on the oodmag site, about deer being in trouble and the MNR has no money to feed deer. It has come to my attention that money was donated to the OFAH in the past and my question is How much money is in that account and how much can be accessed by concerned hunters who wish to help out the deer herd in there area .
How do we go about getting the money for the deer program

Why is everyone looking at the MNR? I have fed they deer a couple round bales of second cut alfalfa this winter. I did not need the MNR to hold my hand in doing so. Buy a bale and put it out. Problem solved.
Who's job is it to help the wild life?... MNR... What are we paying for if not to help sustain the deer population?... Cut backs everywhere but tags and licenses keep goin up!...government blow budgets all the time, this is a worth while cause... Sorry for the rant.... I think our whitetails are worth spending cash on.. I will donate cash to a bale... No problem...

I wonder sometimes if people really consider how much money the MNR would need, in order to do a half way decent job for all the things people want. That then would require massive hikes to our cards/tags etc.
Yeah, the province has been cutting the budget for years, but our contribution is peanuts really. The amount we chip in doesn't come close to the MNRs total expenses and yet people "gripe" every time a fee goes up a little.
This issue, in some small ways, is not unlike Save the Atlantics. Difference being, StA is mostly funded by other sources, kind of paying for itself
White tails (and turkey) are native and evolute to survive (regular)winter like the one we are having. The sick and weak will dye and the strong survive, it's just natural selection. If there are less deer, that only mean less tags for us so need for wining.....
Feeding the DEER is the farthest from an expense the MNR should be funding:
roughly, if Memory serves,...the MNR budget is around $700 million and our tag/licence revenues amounts to about $45 million.

I am not saying the MNR should pay for it I was aware their was a donated fund for it that the mnr had, but apparently the ofah is holder of the fund and from what there website says people may have been donating to it, if so then i have asked how people can access the funds .
Maybe its time the MNR do something about that . from what i have been hearing it cost big dollars to fish in quebec on rivers that hold salmon and trout and out west is even more, thousands of fishermen come from quebec to ontario and fish our waters maybe its about time we charge accordingly instead of them getting a "free ride "Quote:

I have no idea what your talking about...outfitters have controlled access to some lakes etc (whole other issue), so yes you have to pay them...
Lots of small towns are asking for 'donations' to use the public docks to help offset the cost of maintenance and clean up...nothing wrong with that. The launch I use on the Rideau River Locks (federal land) has a $6 fee...go figure, but I'm happy to pay it, goes to upkeep.
You're paying to help manage deer populations. They are already sustainable, even through the winter from hell, due to that proper management. MNR has done their job, to the point where deer in Ontario are in a state of overpopulation throughout most of the province. Extra tags are issued primarily as a means of reducing population, with hunter enjoyment an afterthought.Quote:

Is this winter really that bad with regard to snow depth? Sure it's been cold, but my understanding is that cold is not a significant factor in winter mortality - it's snow depth that kills.
By the end of 2008, the 4 foot chain link fence in my back yard was completely under snow - and that was not drifted - 4+ feet of honest accumulation. This year, I've got about 22" of snow accumulation - not good - but not anywhere near the accumulation in 2008.
I take it there are big chunks of Ontario where snow depth is a lot worse?
I looked at the video MP posted - there doesn't appear to be critical snow levels there. And the tiny fawn they showed - if he's still alive, there's not much of a problem. A fawn that small shouldn't make it.
I don't expect MNR to feed the deer - but they shouldn't discourage others from doing it.
The deer on my land are pretty well non existent at this time of year and a yarded up elsewhere.Even if I could feed them I am confused about what I would put down,I have read that corn is a no,no, but I think deer would probably be eating standing corn right now if they had the opportunity.
There are some very big yarding areas in southern Ontario including Loring,Peterborough Provincial Park,Millbridge,to name a few.I dont see a problem with feeding in those areas but it might also just attract more predators to the yarding areas.

Hi Mark – thank you for your interest in the OFAH DeerSave program. The fund was created to house donations that could be accessed by members and groups in the rare instance that emergency intervention is required to save deer populations. Given the state of our current winter, the current balance of the DeerSave fund is inadequate to address the number of problems we are going to have. One of the eligibility criteria for accessing DeerSave funds is a letter of support from the local District MNR office stating that emergency intervention is required in a given area. We have heard from various sources that the MNR will no longer be active in emergency deer efforts, which means that the OFAH will need to determine how best to proceed with our DeerSave program. It would be extremely difficult for the OFAH to take on this effort on its own, without manpower and financial support from organizations like the MNR. Until we determine how best to proceed with our program, we will not be reviewing applications for funds. I can tell you that this is one of the highest priority items for us this week, so we will likely have a course of action planned by the end of the week.

appears the MNR has taken a real stance against 'aiding' wildlife across the province ( same across Canada actually). I tend to agree, nothing good ever comes from human intervention, when it comes to nature.
Corn and hay can be bad depending on what the deer have been feeding on, if they have been feeding on standing corn or in a hay field, additional feed of this type should be fine but if the deer have been feeding on cedars and tree branches their gut has changed to maximize energy out of these low energy foods. Feeding these deer high energy foods will cause diarrhea and can actually decrease retained nutrients and cause dehydration. In this case a chainsaw will make a better feeder by putting browse within reach of the deer. Ruminant stomachs can be delicate and changes in diet need to happen gradually to avoid issues. This is my understanding anyways.Snip

Asides from the fact that the MNR has no budget, and no field staff remaining, I'd be surprised if they initiated any winter feeding at all, given all the talk about CWD lately. All the CWD data from the states shows that the transmission rate goes through the roof when they are concentrated around feeder areas. Wouldn't surprise me if it will soon be ilegal to feed, esp. if Ontario sees its first case of CWD. The SDI (snow depth index) is now critical in the area I live, with zero supportive crust. I'm running as many trails as I can with my Tundra long track, linking conifer shelter areas to areas that contain good browse. If it was my own private land, I'd be cutting cedar tops and placing them on the trails, and hinging some maples. Pray for no more snow, a thaw to form a crust, and hopefully an early spring. Will be intersting to see the tag allocation next fall.

Try to find out from MNR just how much they spent on OMFRA enforcement - I know that the pig butchering stakeout in Carlsbad springs and subsequent unsuccessful prosecution took up many man-months of one CO's time.

Maintaining a sustainable herd is not the same as keeping deer alive. In many areas, if the MNR was truly trying to maintain a sustainable herd, they'd have to be culling the overpopulation of deer since hunting isn't doing it. Imagine the whining then.<br>Personally I'm looking forward to less of the white-tailed vermin this year.

I applaud those who feel the need to feed deer however I think that winters such as these are natures way of controlling populations, and renewing the land and habitat. We as humans feel we can do this better than mother nature but in the end she will prevail. In fact she has been trying to control the human populations for eons. Severe Winter Puts Ontario's Deer Herds at Risk
White-tailed deer in parts of Ontario are experiencing one of the worst winters in recent memory.
"Deep snow, hard crusts and frigid temperatures could result in significant mortality of adult deer and the loss of this spring's fawn crop," says OFAH Senior Wildlife Biologist Mark Ryckman. The MNR reports that most deer entered this winter in really good shape thanks to an abundance of natural foods in 2013; however, it remains likely that this year's harsh winter conditions will still have an impact on many of central and northern Ontario's deer herds.
In 1995, the OFAH established the DeerSave Fund to help members, clubs and partners deliver emergency winter deer conservation activities, such as browse cutting, trail breaking and emergency feeding. Mild winters have limited the need for emergency winter deer conservation in recent years, but the DeerSave Fund has been called upon when needed to provide targeted funding to aid struggling herds.

"We may not be in an emergency situation yet, but it is looking more and more likely that intervention will be required somewhere in the province," said Ryckman. In the meantime, concerned conservationists can help deer by packing down trails in areas frequented by deer, and by cutting preferred browse species (maples, birch, dogwood, sumac, hemlock, cedar, etc.).

Like other outdoor activities, it remains critically important to respect private property and keep safety in mind at all times when performing winter conservation efforts. The Federation only endorses deer feeding in emergency situations, and only according to science-based MNR guidelines.

The OFAH was like a UNION at one time to hunters ,fishers and trappers in ONTARIO . They do not answer to the MNR and the OFAH will not give food from their DeerSave Prog unless the MNR blesses it. This DeerSave prog. is a joke, where does this money sit.
People donate money for deer feed and in my opinion they want the deer fed not money sitting in an account while deer are down.
This wwfp feed the deer every year and it is run by volunteers so all money goes in the deer herds belly.
I believe we need to help the deer herds out well before some decides it is a harsh winter.

Sparkplug I have relatives who were involved heavily until they came home one day and found, shall we say, "privileged hunters" in their back yard shooting multiple deer as they came to the feeders and discovered there wasn't a thing they could do to stop it.
Hi DaleK. The feeding we do is not with auto feeders but done daily by hand. The feeding is not done during any hunting season so they would be poaching. Also most of the land is private so outsiders that should not be there can be removed easily. I have been feeding for 24 years and have not had any problem like you speak off.

I think feeding deer is wrong, under any circumstances. It changes their biology and relationship to man. It removes their fear of man, and makes them rely on man for food instead of "pawing" and foraging for their own. Will they get skinny? Some will, as well some will die. It will make the herd stronger.
As I have stated before, Baiting can be a useful tool, but feeding year round in my mind is making pets out of them. If thats the case why not just hold feed out with one hand and a knife in the other. When they come to eat, just slit a throat. When I've discussed this with Biologists from UofL, and UofC, and when I get a chance with Kowalski, dean of wildlife studies in Deathbridge, and they all agree with me with feeding wildlife and even baiting. It comes to an issue of "fair chase" however it is all a question of..... Hold on guys .................................................. .................

While this winter has been harder than winters past, I don't think it will wipe out entire deer herds. Some will die, no doubt, but that is nature. Deer population is high. The herd will survive.
Suceeding in advocating the MNR start feeding deer because guys want a high herd population come fall means there will be less money for programs such as combatting invasive species, park programs, etc. I would much rather the MNR spend money to destroy the Emerald Ash Borer Beetle (for example) than to put out feed for deer. The deer will survive, maybe not in as high of numbers as in the fall but they will survive.

On the weekend the feed store got a request for a price quote on corn & oats per tonne from one of the local Angler & Hunters Club. I don't know if this is at the request of the MNR or voluntary. It's been a long cold winter here so far (not exceptional snow depth), maybe they feel March won't bring any relief for the deer?? Going to be interesting to see what doe tag allocation is this year compared to 2013.
I seen some MNR overspending last weekend, They were hauling around there fish sniffing dog in a $1500.00 ski-boos . Probably could have had a dog box on skis built a lot cheaper then that.Quote:

Deer Could Have Trouble Surviving The Winter

There could be fewer deer making it through the winter in northwestern Ontario this year.
Wildlife officials say deep snow, hard crusts and frigid temperatures are playing a factor.
Senior wildlife biologist with the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters Mark Ryckman says high mortality is expected.
Ryckman says still there's no need for any human intervention.
He does encourage people to help deer by packing down trails in areas frequented by the animals, and by cutting preferred food sources for easier access.
