Got to love a career politician telling the public what they want to hear for votes. Todays press conference she announced that she wants to ban handguns in Toronto. A political promise with no teeth but sure looks good to stir the pot for votes. Hope the public is smarter than that.

No, she doesn't want to ban your handguns. She wants to dupe a bunch of people into believing that she has some kind of policy on crime, by promising to do something that the city has no legal power to do.
She is also promising to work with other big city mayors to "tighten restrictions to stop the flow of illegal guns" from the States. Not sure which restrictions she intends to tighten. Perhaps she plans to make smuggling really, really illegal instead of just, you know, illegal.

Trust me, she will get plenty of traction with this ridiculous announcement. Don't be too surprised when Wynne hops on that bandwagon also. Not that either of these idiots have jurisdiction over firearms or border security but the lefties will lap this up quicker than a Starbucks grande latte.
I understand people wanting to be safe, but has anyone asked how any of the shootings would have been prevented by this proposal?

So, as I understand it, Olivia Chow's thoughts are that - despite the fact that the use of a gun in a crime is criminal offense, despite the fact that taking your handgun out of your home without the proper permit is a criminal offense, despite that owning any firearm without a valid PAL is a criminal offense - what's really missing from the law enforcement "tool kit" is a by-law? Her thinking, if she is sincere, is that the theft of legally-owned handguns is an important source of guns in the black market, and so a by-law will reduce the supply of guns to the black market. This simply demonstrates that she does not understand how black markets function.
The liberals have already prohibited all the "nasty" handguns, the 25s, 32s, short barrelled pocket guns, shouldn't crime be almost gone in Canada? Surely the criminals haven't stooped to using target guns?

Is it any wonder why half the eligible voters in this country now couldn't be bothered to vote anymore? With idiots like these candidates it's only going to get worse. Thankfully it looks like Tory seems to be gaining in the polls and Chow losing ground. If that knucklehead Ford pulled out then Tory would win. But he won't pull out unfortunately.
This is all pretense for an eventual ban on cars in the city. Next month she'll announce that more people die in a week of traffic accidents than a year of gunplay, so you'll have to scrap your car. Don't worry, you can still take the TTC, assuming you live on one of the major routes and don't mind taking 3 times as long to get to your destination.

Now multiply this by the hundreds of Polices force across Canada.
Police do a difficult and necessary job and deserve a good pay. What the unions have done though is devastating our economy. Automatic increases over and above inflation, especially when we are in deficit position should be illegal. No public sector employee should see any kind of raise until we are balancing budgets. Removing discretionary buying /spending power from taxpayers and giving it to government employees is gradually marching us into bankruptcy. Small towns that use the OPP are now at the breaking point and can no longer afford the annual increases of policing costs. At some point we may see the return of the small town police force. I guarantee you they would have no problem staffing them for 25% less wages with able bodied non visible minority quota candidates who would love to make $75K a year. In most of these small towns with lower real estate costs they would still live extremely well. There are 3 police officers in my deer camp who all make
the sunshine list and even they admit that the bubble will burst at some point. If municipalities start dumping the OPP then there will be be layoffs and many of those officers will be glad to get a municipal force police job even at a lower wage.
if they just ban murder then all the shootings will stop

Great column. The problem is we are talking about Toronto " progressives" here. You make some valid points. However, we will never see the return of small town police services. Government adequacy standards have pretty well eliminated that policing option. No small municipality could afford their own services, because of these standards. This is the reason for amalgamations of police services, and OPP takeovers of smaller services.Quote:
