Just curious, not venting.
Area 38 for rifle. My dad's gang applied with 15 guys for a bull.
No tag. My old gang, my buddies North of Massey, applied 10
guys for a bull and got one. Another gang with 6 guys, and got
a bull. That means no guaranteed large group size for 38 bull.
But with 15 guys, they should have gotten a tag.
Interesting LOTTERY!! Interesting MANAGEMENT!!
The '15 guys' means nothing really unless they were all pool 1. Sorry to hear they didn't get their tag...
How does it work if there is no guaranteed group size? Do they calculate and do the large group allocation? Or does it go right to random draw?
If there is no guaranteed group size then all groups are put in the same pool based on the number of people, at least this is my understanding. You could have groups of 2 people and get a tag if there is no guarantee, it is just luck, it is a lottery.
That's right. The 15 guys (all pool 1) fell individual. Lottery wise, they could have gotten 2 bulls!!
But management wise, 1 bull tag for that group is plenty. Buddy who gets the tag falls into pool
2. They will enjoy being at camp and I'll go and play in the woods with them for a calf. But
it's a management system I question at times.
I think they should turn the whole thing into a lottery, you apply for a minimal fee to get a bull, cow or calf tag, then if you are successful you go hunting. I question how many calves actually survive when you put all predators into place.Quote:

Sure it does. It says pool 1 applicants only are considered in determining the group size.
So your pool 1 guy drew in the Random draw and will be pool 2 next year, and your other three should be pool 2 next year.

So.. By that statement.. Assuming all things equal next year, we could end up with 3 bull or cow tags? Since the 3 p1 guys won't meet group size.. And will each draw individual... 3 bulls would kinda suck.. Need a cow in there as well lol..Quote:

It helps immensely to understand the draw and keep track of data from year to year. We have pretty much had the same group members for several years. That helps out a lot as well.
Not likely. You will have 3 pool 1, and one pool 2 hunters. Depending on your WMU, for instance that guaranteed group size was 4 or even 5, your group MAY still get a tag. If your group is still too small to get a tag from the second large group draw, all will added to the individual draw. Not much chance of all three pool 1 guys lucking out. This is where keeping track of all the previous year draw data helps.Quote:

This is my first year.. So trying to learn it all. In our wmu there was surplus. So it may of been feasible.. But not if we got bumped down to the large group size... As we would of got our tag as a group before entering the individual draw..?Quote:

It's what this post was about! We need as a group of hunters to understand, or try to understand the system.
I'm not mad about my dad's gang not getting a tag. Trying to figure it out for the next year. And, they could have gotten the guaranteed cow with 12 guys. It was a gamble. We study it every year. Last year,14+ got a bull. My bad for pushing the old guys in the group to apply bull!!
Your group this year only had one pool 1 hunter. Only pool 1 hunters are considered in group sizes. Your buddy lucked out in the individual random draw. That tells me that this year, all groups of 4 got a tag, as did all groups in the next large group draw. There was still tags left, so they went to the random draw. If this is the case next year, your group of 3 should get a tag.Quote:

Everyone shouldn't apply and save there $ for a few years. This would make the govt & minister take a good hard look if there revenue was halted! Maybe then the system would get the right attention it requires.

WMU 21A is crazy. Last fall 2 of us in pool 1 applied as a group and got a bull tag. The other 2 guys in pool 2 applied on their own and each got a cow tag. WTF???? Never even saw a moose!
