Stay Off My Stands

Just a complaint or . I hunt a property with a couple other guys. I have multiple stands set up and cameras. I set up mineral stations and supplemental feed in the winter. The other guys ( who ive never met) do NOTHING! There is one home made hang in with sticks thats it. Now my / question is, should I be pissed that someone else has sat my stands? I leave certain areas alone until later in October so theyre fresh. And yet last year I get to a stand n see fresh boot tracks and mud all over my ladderstand. Plus a broken bow hanger. What would possess someone to sit another guys stand (thats not a friend with permission) I even have pics of a guy trying to sneak by one of my trail cameras. Sorry, just had to .

You don't mention whether it's posted private property or public land. If it's private and you have permission,I'd be PO'd. If it's public property....oh,well.

Sorry, private property. The other 2 guys have permission to hunt but why sit my stands? ???

I know how you feel. I've gone to a stand (on my property) in the afternoon and have found where a guy sat in the morning and had thrown candy bar wrappers all around. Maddening!

Guys sit in other guys stands because they're too lazy to do the work for themselves.

You guys should definitely try to work it out between yourselves. Explain to these guys why you are leaving the area alone. Whatever you do, don't involve the landowner in this kind of dispute or quite possibly you'll all lose access to the property. They don't want or need that kind of headache.

It sounds selfish, I'll probably get flamed, but this is exactly the reason why I ask landowners on the properties I have permission on to only allow access to me and my friends/family. One guy or small group = less problems. They don't need the trouble and it could end up with no access for anyone. Different guys or groups with different hunting styles hunting one 100 acre piece of property just does not make for a good scenario. I've seen it happen first hand.

Maybe leave a note on your stand and ask them to contact you so you can come to an agreement. Example - you guys stick to this (x) acres, we'll stick to this (x) acres. Good luck, hope you get it worked out.

Because they are good spots and you are not there. Talk to them and tell them not to sit in your stands or hunt them instead because they will. Not much you can do unless you tell them. Good spots need to be protected.

Sounds like your forced to share the property with a bunch of weekend wannabe's, not serious hunters. A 'real' hunter knows it's not right to mess with another guys set-up without permission.

The reality is, there isn't much you can do but to see if you can work it out with them.

GW11 is right, it's better to get exclusive privileges on the land you hunt to avoid this kind of hassle, but if that's not possible, your unfortunately at the mercy of these guys morals/ethics.

I think if someone invented a device to prevent someone from climbing the stand while your not there they,d make a killing. Are your cameras in tamper proof boxes? If so you could point them right at your stands in a place that they are easily seen. people might think twice if they know they are on camera.I,ll never understand why people have to be such dicks!!

That kind of sucks, but if you both have permission they ain't going away.... I would leave a note having them contact you. Maybe after hearing your voice, or putting a face to the treestand they may view it a little differently...but definitely leave a note

I would talk to the owner of the property and let them know what is going on. You might want to arrange a meeting between all of the people that have permission to hunt the property to try to work this out. If you still have problems after that, find somewhere else to hunt where you won't have all these hassles. Good luck.

Thanks guys. I definitely dont want to involve the land owner. I think im going to sell all my ladderstands after this season. Go back to hang on stands but take my lw climbing sticks in and out ever hunt. Its a little harder to sit a stand without a way up to it.

Better yet sell the ladder stands and buy yourself a good climber. That way it makes you more versatile if the deer change patterns and no worrying if someone's sitting in your stand. Once you get good with a climber they become your best weapon for killing deer

On public land, I use hang on tree stands that use a chain to attach to the tree, coupled with a lock as a theft deterrent. I then use Cranford detachable tree steps, which are very easy to remove from the tree and transport out of the bush. It's not a fool proof system to prevent theft, because if someone wanted to be a real jerk, they could steal the bolts that are left in the tree. But is definitely makes it a challenge for anyone else to use the stand.
On private property that I hunt on, I don't currently have an issue, so I use ladder stands and hang on stands with climbing sticks that remain attached to the tree.
You could always go with a climber too. I guess the disadvantage is that the other hunters would now see all these vacant spots and potentially hang their stands there or build permanent stands.

People sit in my stands and I've sat in other people's stands.

I've also had people put stands up five feet from mine. Not all spots are created equally, especially in the south on small properties. When I go out, I want to maximize my opportunity just like any other hunter, so I'm going to take the best spot available. Having experienced people sitting in my stands and having someone hang their own stand in the same "spot", I'd rather someone just use my stand - the less infrastructure and clearing, the better.

They do, it's called a climbing tree stand.

Those guys are definitely lazy, and don't want to put any work. I think it's pretty easy to see that these guys are weekend warriors that can't be bothered shelling out the money or hard work to set a stand to their own liking.

A farm I hunt has another guy hunting it once in a blue moon and while I've met him and he seems like a decent guy, I still take a removable section of ladder from my hang on stands to make it inaccessible without that section or a serious boost from a buddy. That way I don't worry about anybody stumbling across my stand and stealing it, let alone someone hunting out of it.

you could always fold the seat up (if applicable) and chain it to the tree, preventing its use......if they are going to hunt your stands atleast make them stand the whole time!! if it's a ladder stand then you could chain a thin piece of plywood over the bottom 4-5 rungs to prevent other people from climbing it.

Some good input on how to keep them out of your stands, but that's all you can do. If you have "shared permission" to hunt the land I don't see any way to keep them out of your spots.

Now I don't know how big the property is but it's probably unreasonable to expect that one person can hang several stands in the best spots and expect to be able reserve the area. If they stay off of your stands and say put up a blind right underneath your stand I think there's nothing you can do.
It'd be like putting up an ice shack and expecting no one to fish nearby...

That's why people get exclusive permission.

You are right, I think the more applicable wording would be casual or fair weather hunter. I spend most of my time hunting weekends too due to school and work, I'm sure you have your hands full with kids I can't imagine trying to find the the time. My apologies!

I guess I'm another of those "weekend warriors". But I spend more time in my bush (almost every Saturday for April-Dec, a week in August + most of my time hunting) than any of my neighbors do that live there. I'm limited by a 5 day a week job, a wife and two daughters. I do make some long weekends - a 3 day weekend for turkey, a 4 day weekend for deer/bow, and two weeks for deer/rifle - but for the most part, I'm a weekend warrior - separated from the bush by a 2 hr drive.

Equating weekend hunters with laziness - well I guess I don't see the logic behind that - more of the same intelligence that brought us the word citiots.

I'm not genuinely offended by the posts I commented on - think the main point of those posts was more to do with hunters that are not dedicated or passionate about the sport rather than those that can only find the time to hunt on the weekend.

Anyways, Rugger does have a valid point about placing stands in all the best spots and then expecting other hunters who have permission to stay out of the area. There are only so many good spots to hunt, especially on a presumably smallish piece of private property. I use the removable steps primarily because I don't want my stuff stolen and I don't want others using or damaging my equipment.
Seems like the best option for the OP would be a climber stand.

Yup...that's the intent..a 'wannabe' hunter...doesn't do a stick of prep work and mooches off everyone elses efforts. Types of guys that hunt 1-2 weekends a year and then wear camo the rest of the year and call themselves a 'Hunter'.

Too funny, coincidental maybe.
I was hunting with a couple of buddies last night, one of them said he'd been deer hunting this property for about 7-8 years. Some new guy gets permission a couple of years ago and now has 3 or 4 stands in all the funnels and good spots and expects him to stay clear of them. My other buddy says he hunted this one spot for years, got his turkey in the same spot almost every year on opener, then new guy shows up and always parked his truck exactly where my buddy has taken his turkey every year. There's always two side to a story.
The fact your cameras don't go missing, shows a little character on their part. don't ya think?
Maybe they think the owner of the property doesn't want stands all over the place, who knows. Doing NOTHING to a property means just that, nothing.
You should talk with them if you have a problem, it might just be an eye opener for you.

Ok. First I had solo permission on the property. The land owner has since let 2 other guys hunt it. I do play well with others and respect the fact if there's a vehicle already there I will not park and hunt aswell (property isn't that big). I would have no problem if someone hangs a stand or blind near one of my stands, I dont pretend I own the property. Just dont sit my stand. Can't use a climber in this area, no suitable trees.

I concur with if you are hunting property wih some one else you have to have respect for both parties. any hunter with a lick of brains should be able to figure the best spots for stands.If you pick all the best spots, they also will want to hunt there , when you are not there, so i can see there position. We have the same problem where i hunt and you have to get along and make the best of a bad situation.

Exactly. Otherwise if you argue and fight and involve the land owner you can all be SOL. Like I said to start, its just a complaint. Hope some new younger hunters read this and learn to respect other hunters.

My brother had turkeys roosting in his stands before. Too funny.

My brother tried to work out an agreement with shared permission. Talked to the other guys, they had permission first and stands set at back of property so my brother said "ok, you guys are at the back, and all set there, I'll stay out of there and just hunt the front", they agreed. He hunted a ground blind that day at the front on a decently travelled trail, didn't get anything. Comes back a week later and they had put up a ladder stand 15 yds away from where he was sitting. He never went back so they won. I however would have considered our deal null and void at that point and hunted anywhere on the property I felt fit, including in their stands. Treat others as you would like to be treated, dish back what they are dishing you.

The more I respond to these posts, the more I realize I have had really bad luck dealing with gigantic jack in my past, it would be refreshing to meet a hunter abroad who wants to work towards the same goal, instead of focusing so much energy to force people out.

Alot of selfish greed out there from my experience. Really sucks.

Living and hunting in Southern Ontario you have to learn to work with others. I just hunt when its ty out. Keeps the ham n eggers at home.

Different species but last year my son and I were after ducks and geese at a flooded hayfield where several groups had permission to hunt. 5 minutes after we got there another truck pulls in. After some brief introductions we all agreed to work together toward a common goal. Had a great morning and met some new hunting partners. Hope you can work something out with these guys.

Easier to team up together when waterfowl hunting tho. Unless you have a 2 man stand and sit in the same stand together...lolSeriously tho, get a climber. Prep a bunch of trees in the areas you may want to hunt and away you go. Not only will they not be able to use your stands, they likely won't even know the area you are targeting.

I have a climber and lw stand n sticks
The ladderstands I've had up are just handy. Land owner wouldn't appericiate me cutting limbs off his trees.

Don't forget their's a lot of low life trespassers that have no problem sitting in stands,or pushing your bush to the neighbouring property where they have permission.

Lol. Tell me about it. Had a crew of guys pushing a bush as I sat in my stand last year ( different bush) Just told them don't shoot me and I won't shoot them. Friggin orange army.

here's a trick to keep all those idiots out there that mess with your stands...get yourself a paint marker in white and write on the ladder up into your stand....."smile you are on camera" and other messages like that....people think twice about using it......
works for me on public land....

We hunt a bush in S.O. and there are two parties that hunt it. We have stands up and they have stands up. We have a mutual agreement that when we are there they are not and all stands can be sat by either party. A phone call or two prior to the season opener and everything is worked out. Works for us.

A fella that hunts the Ganaraska Forest did that. When he came back,not only was his stand gone,but,so was his camera. Underneath where his camera was,there was a note that said "thanks".

I am sorry to hear someone hunts your stands. Is there a way you can contact the other guys and get together for a coffee? Discuss game plans and you're situation.

I think the biggest problem is the hunter that sits in my stand on the wrong wind. One mistake will stink a good stand out and I'll never know why I'm not seeing much on that stand. I don't like the fact that he's using my stand but screwing it up for me is even more insulting.

I have no idea how anyone can think this is ok Is like taking someones atv and say well u were not using it is what is thee problem.. That about sums it up.

It's pretty much a no-brainer to me. If some anus is ignorant enough to use your stand after you've done all the work , then a bit of old fashioned "circumstantial punishment" is definitely due. I realize it's normally very childish to mess with someone's immune system, but hey, what the hell!

We did this one on two baited bear stands we had up on crown land. Worked like a charm. Pretty much what they call "good, clean fun that you can't put a dollar value on".

Get yourself a couple of pair of disposable surgical gloves. Now go cut yourself about 2 lbs of poison ivy stalk. Don't waste your time with any the remaining leaves, as the plant is now in translocation mode and the highest volatile resin content is in the main stem cambium. Now grind those stems into a fine mush paste, to resemble creamed horseradish sauce. You should be whistling as you do this. Pop the mush, with all the juice concentrate, into an old margarine tub.
At your stand, don another pair of gloves, and liberally coat anything on your stand that would receive body contact from a user (climbing pegs, ladder rungs, shooting rail, shooting rail adjust knobs, seat cushion, platform base). Do a little bit of fancy extra whistling as you coat the bottom 6 feet, and the top 6 feet, of your hanging gun retrieval rope. Use a J-cloth rag, and make sure you paste the tree bark for four feet above the platform seat level (where the person's back and neck will rest).
Now open the little backpack you've carried into the bush. Remove the Penthouse/Hustler skin mag that you picked up at the 7-Eleven). You've already done some preamble prep on this mag, using a resin-impregnated j-cloth that was dampened with resin. You used a hairdryer to dry the pages). Leave the mag inside a garbage bag, under the seat, Make sure the neck of the bag is well coated in resin too. Now go home and feel good about yourself.
Chances are the prick using your stand, even once, will be admitted to Emerg for life-threatening contact dermatitis. The type that requires I.V. systemic corticosteroids, and time off work. He'll be coated in resin every time he touches his gear, unless he does the math and cleans every piece of his equipment, right down to his car keys, and the extended cab upholstery in his truck.
Only real drawback is you'll render that stand useless, until you take it down, and power wash it with industrial strength detergent and degreaser.

Leave the mag inside a garbage bag, under the seat, Make sure the neck of the bag is well coated in resin too. Now go home and feel good about yourself.
Chances are the prick using your stand, even once, will be admitted to Emerg for life-threatening contact dermatitis. The type that requires I.V. systemic corticosteroids, and time off work. He'll be coated in resin every time he touches his gear, unless he does the math and cleans every piece of his equipment, right down to his car keys, and the extended cab upholstery in his truck.
Only real drawback is you'll render that stand useless, until you take it down, and power wash it with industrial strength detergent and degreaser.

Why not re-rig your stand and take home the first 4' of ladder, or lay it somewhere out of sight ?

Just don't do anything silly to sabotage the stand.....You may find yourself getting more than you wanted.
