A perfect hunting knife would never get dull no matter how much bone I hit.... Since I don't own one of those I tend to use my 110 buck knife.. it holds an edge well...
My 110 buck... second choice.. any sharp buck...
There's no perfect one, do it all knife, that's why I have a drawer full of them...

I really like my Buck 110 with the upgraded S30V steel blade and BOS heat treatment.
All around good Knife for a great price Buck 110. Sadly I loose mine every few years. Think I have owned at least 10 in the past 18 years.
Buck 110 is a great knife, but I prefer my Russell Boaters knife by Grohman. Also like my Rapala fillet knife.
This is my favourite hunting knife. Besides the Delta logo it doesnt have a marking on it. I suspect it was likely "made in China" but ive no idea, I won it at a charity dinner. Its done a bunch of deer, small game, and skinned out a couple moose too. Sharpens up to a wicked edge with ease, which holds as well as one can expect. Best of all, it just feels right in my hand. That the most important part.

Buck 112 Ranger has been mine for a while now
I really like the one I assembled five years ago. High carbon Finnish steel. Takes an edge well. I used it twice this year to cut the ribs open without sharpening. Just a little touch up with a steel. The blade is about 3 1/2". That's all I need...

It is a Benchmade with a high drop point and blade length of 4 7/16 inches. It is S30V steel and does hold an edge pretty good. It has field dressed 5 deer this fall without sharpening and still shaves hair without pulling. My only real complaint is the blade shape is not the best for carving the rectum out of a deer but if your careful it is fine.
I don't think you can beat a good drop point for big game field dressing. A 4"-4 1/2" blade will do the job and I find anything longer than 4 1/2" makes the knife too unbalanced and blade heavy. Most handle materials used today are tough enough to withstand hard use but I guess there is just the question of whether you want the practicality of a grippy rubber type handle or the looks of other harder materials. I do like my knife handles to be fairly flat sided. If the handle is too rounded, like a lot of stag handles, I find it hard to get a feel for the orientation of the blade.
This is the knife I've been using almost exclusively for the last 10 years or so. It's got a bit of a different blade shape than most drop points but it works. I've only had one knife ever that's held an edge as well as this knife. Not sure who made it but it was marketed by Remington. I like it's smooth over all profile, no protruding finger guard or pommel to get hung up while working inside the animal.

I've been really happy with my Bear Grylls Gerber Fixed blade knife, I got it as a Christmas gift about three years ago and use it all the time.

One that is SHARP. If it's not sharp it's just another piece of useless metal to carry.
For me it would be a drop point or a recurve 3 1/2" long there would be knotchwork on the top so I always know where my finger is on top of the blade.
For the handle...theres just something about the feel of wood. A nice burlwood or birds eye would suit fine. Handle would closely resemble the blade length.

I'm not hung up on the aesthetics of a knife, purely utilitarian..it has to stay sharp, easy to handle and sharp. Also like a collapsing knife to carry on my pack.
In that vane, I saw this skinning knife on Amazon this morning and it is along the lines of what I consider a good knife. Small blade and thin enough to get into the nooks and crannies (Bung hole etc).
I like the colour as well, nice to be able to find it laying on the ground when I'm gutting by flashlight,
The reviewers say it's an extremely sharp knife which is paramount and I like the idea you can get spare blades for it.
I may look at this for a stocking stuffer :)

I usually have my Briwning FDT, and a Buck 110, with me while hunting. There is a small, rapala fillet knife in my hunting pack, and my Swiss Army knife is always in my pocket. There are others I may carry or switch out depending on the situation, such as a Gerber belt hatchet. I think my next knife will be a cold steel bushmaster, then maybe their boar spear ( just like the looks of that one )
Spyderco stretch . She wasn't cheap, she aint pretty but with a perfect grip for my hand and vg10 steel that holds a wicked edge that sharpens up fast it is my favorite by far. The first hunt I took it on I arrowed my best buck while sitting on the ground at 8 yards so it has become sentimental as well.

I grew up using the victorinox fibrox series ( butcher / commercial ) grade knives. They are economical less than 40$ and come in many designs. Nella and Hookeye make quality equipment as well.
Really all you need is a boning and skinning knife. They are a plastic handle but come in wood if you prefer. Most butchers stick with the plastic though as hey have a better grip and this safer.
Dont get too hung up in grade of steel etc for holding an edge a good 40 dollar victrinox honing steel and sharpening stone or emery belt grinder and you can keep an edge on a blade in seconds.
They also make a dandy 9" flexible fillet knife, best I've ever used anyone who ever uses mine ends up buying one lol
I also use the Victorinox line, great knives for de-boning/butchering, they do hold an edge well. I found the de-boning blade to long for skinning however.Quote:

For hunting: One not too big and heavy, easy to sharpen, easy to see when it's on the ground and one that has a saw to cut thru bones. Right now I have a Browning that's almost there beside the brown color.

I'd love to own a Puma someday, since I've been looking at them in catalogues since I was a lad. My go to hunting knife is this one. Normark still sells them, and unless things have changed, they are still under $50. They did make a change a few years ago, and actually put a bolster / guard on them, but the handle is a non-slip material, and it has never been an issue for me.

I think the fibrox skinning knife is what you will see in the scabbard of butchers who skin steers all day long.

I actually need to buy one for xmas for my nephew who is starting to hunt. Thinking he needs a fixed drop point. Probaby get him a Buck. Everybody should own one of those.
Terry, check out the Buck zipper, I have the one with wood handle. I think its the zipper model.

I have this Schrade Outfitter Old Timer for a long time and it is very good. It stays sharp forever, the rubber grip helps when your hands get dirty, and the sheath is really nice.
