Some think their dogs shouldn't have to be leashed. The law states you're not to let your dogs run at large. A dog doesn't know boundries of private land.
What about the game (deer) the dogs kill when running at large. Or the dog that accidently gets trapped because the owner refuses to leash his mutt!!
I'm not talking about licensed hunting dogs!!
What's your thoughts???

I think a dog has absolutely zero rights on my private property. Zero. If the owner is willing to take that risk, fine. But they should under no circumstances whine or protest if their dog is hit by a car, shot for running deer, or if there is a feud with the neighbours. For the record, I like dogs. But I have had a couple set-tos with irresponsibe owners who thought it was unreasonable of me not to allow their dog to use my yard as a toilet.
Like I said, a can of worms.

I don't know if leash laws exist on Crown Land....maybe it's posted in different townships.
I live in a rural setting, so allot of the way things are done out here differ from what you folks that live in the burbs are used to. Very few dogs are leashed or even tethered. I only tie up my hound as he will run off occasional if free, but the other breeds I own enjoy their freedom to use the farm as they want. They spend most of their day just laying around out in the yard, they don't wander far and stay close by, as do most farm dogs.
Most of my neighbors also have free ranging dogs that run up to meet the truck as you pull in the lane. No one thinks anything of it, its the way of life here.
So if you move out to the country or using land out here, you'll need to adjust your paradigms...
I live in the heart of deer country and rarely hear of dogs running deer except during deer season. No one who owns a good deer dog would let it run free the other 50 weeks a year. The MNR has stiff fines if your dog is caught harassing wildlife and it's an accepted and understood rule that crotchety property owners have the legal right to shot your dog if it's running free on his land.
So if you take the risk, you take responsibility.
(sounds a lot like that other thread...break the rules, pay the consequence and stop whining...LOl..)
Actually, the law states dogs must be under control at all times while on crown land. Kinda fuzzy about licensed hunting dogs though!!
Which law would that be? Any dog-under-control laws I am aware of are municipal bylaws. There are provincial laws related to dogs chasing game OOS and dogs/livestock, but I am not aware of any province-wide law regarding crown land.Quote:

Both of you are right, it doesn't say on a leash!! The law states you can not allow your dogs to harass wildlife. It's a hefty fine.
A dog can be shot only by a by law officer or C.O.

If my dog saw a deer it instinctively wants to chase it. Weighs about 16lbs. It's on the leash 100% of the time. I don't live in a city.

The laws can be pretty contrary when it comes to dogs.In my township there is a bye law prohibiting dogs running at large but at the same time we have licensed dogs running deer in season.I suppose common sense should take over and the allowance under Provincial law should supercede the bye law.In the winter if I,am running a beagle on rabbits its legal provincially up until the beagle decides to run deer.But I,am probably breaching the bye law for the township.
The question might be is a dog running a rabbit considered to be running at large if it is out of your view and hearing which they very often are.
Not to sound smart but what exactly is the difference between hunting dogs running game and non hunting dogs? I don't think either are stopped by property boundries. When it comes to a topic like this it's all personal opinion fueled largely by emotion. There's no right answer...only opinion. What about the vehicles that kill/injure deer? How about hunters making poor shots?
If you want to leash your dog then fine, if not well that's your choice too. I wouldn't get too fired up about this one.

comes down to training i guess, some are willing to take the time to train their dog, my dog has taking off chasing animals before, i.e a coon in the back yard, a stern yell and she turns back to me. and trust me, you shoot my dog, u got worse problems then a visit from the opp...

I think the FWCA laws regarding dogs at large during the closed season is primarily relating to dogs chasing deer in winter months where just the chase may cause pregnant does to abort or die from exhaustion. Or the dogs catch and kill deer when there is a crust that holds the dogs but the deer breaks through.
In my view, it is too bad that dogs chase deer other than legal hunting with dogs. It is the owner that should be tarred and feathered. The poor old dog is only doing what used to come naturally to it.

I feel strongly about the dogs that run at large. They are taking down deer more often than what we think. I was sitting in a blind 2 years ago. A deer comes running out of the bush, full tilt. About 35 seconds later here comes 2 dogs out behind it.
The reason there are so many threads on dogs running at large is because maybe it's happening WAY TOO OFTEN!!!
What's the difference between a dog chasing a deer once every blue moon and coyotes and wolf chasing them all year around?!?!
I mean what the chance for a dog (on his own) for catching a deer? Very little so I don't think we should be so worry about it, even so they might screwed up your hunt a couple of time in your life time....
They are killing fawns and running pregnant doe's to the point to where they abort. A dog is domesticated a wolf is not.
Also the dog owner should take full responsibility if his mutt gets caught in a trap.

I really love dogs, but don't ask me how often someone's beagles screwed up my deer hunt. Something I learnt to suck up or just go before the deer campers come. Really no big deal.
There are not many dogs that are capable to get a deer by themself. If you have two or more large/fast dogs teaming up, their odds increase quite a bit.
Again, an irresponsible owner would need to let them run without supervison for an quite some time before something happens.

Crown is Crown. Trappers have rights to be there. Most trappers who set on Crown have their traps not far away from field edges, trails, logging roads, pond edges etc so that the time off the sled/atv is minimal to check the trap. Obviously some discretion is needed on the exact placement of the trap, but in the end the trapper has a right to do it.
My grandfather has been trapping for decades, pretty well his whole life. As far as I know he has caught one domestic dog in his time. It was in a leg hold trap, so the dog was released unscathed, and in fact the owner of the dog had to help get it out. The owner also took full responsibility and did not blame my grandfather.
The situation is not as simple as you make it out to be.

However, I really don't think dogs running at large and killing pregnant deer is a huge problem. I've never seen such a thing and I've been roaming the hills, bush , woods and valleys ( deer habit ) with dogs since I was 7.
The dog should always be under control and trash broken for deer, porcupine, opossum etc.

It just is not that simple as you said. We all have to live with each other and have to play the odds.
People who don't care what their dogs do day after day roaming the woods are cut for the same cloth as those who place a kill setup on the ground right next to a trail.
There is only a small percentage of dogs that run at large, and in that small group, there is only a small percentage of breeds amongst them that would chase a deer and then a smaller group of them that could take down a deer or even a fawn.
I think your inflating the seriousness of the problem Chris based on your experience, I don't think it's anywhere near the norm. Be interesting to find out how many charges/fines are levied in a year against owners for letting their dogs run at large.
I've had a pair of my neighbours (4 mile away) Blood Hounds come under my bow stand one year. I thought it was funny, finished my hunt and went to his place to let him know were they were. Together we got them back home safely.
Never crossed my mind to call a CO on him...

Deer have a hard enough time surviving without a domesticated mutt chasing them to the point of where they are killed or where they abort their fetus. Keep dogs on your own land and under control!!

Does your township have an animal control officer Chris ??? Maybe you should take you beef to the Town council and tell them that dogs are running rampant in your community. If there are that many then they're probably strays and they need to be picked up.

The properties I have with issues are unorganized. The OMNR realize that there is a problem. They said I need proof of who's dogs are the culprits.
One time it was a lady working for OSPA who brings dogs home with her to her remote property. In this episode I caught the dog on my land 3 miles from her and dropped it off at the CO's door. She was warned. Never happened again after that.
Another time I saw a dog taking a fawn down. Got a picture. Game warden said first time he's seen dogs in action ripping a new born fawn apart!! When the CO visited the dog owner there was blood and guts all over the porch of dog owners house.
The time 2 dogs ran deer right by me. Deers tongue dragging the ground and blood covered hamstring. Deer most likely was killed just after I saw the dogs.
2013 when a malamute showed up at my wolf bait. Dog owner was known to let his dog run wild to fend for it self. I had proof in the back of my truck who's dog that one was.
A lot of that goes on, every year right after the hunt, but some here refuse to believe it.Quote:

Your neighbors most likely have the same poor attitude as you. Let your dogs run off a leash, meaning at large. Like the CO says got to catch the dogs in action. Your mutts just haven't been caught yet.
CL - your mixing two things together here - a) off leash and b) at large. Although in one post, you did it straight - that they are different. Off leash - well that's pretty simple. At large - off leash, off the owners property and not under control of the owner. Two different things. There are many, many farms with farm dogs that are not leashed. If they were, off what use would they be at chasing off unwanted predators. Unleashed farm dogs are pretty common in farming areas and most do not have a problem with it. A farm dog that is running off to chase deer or wander other neighbours properties isn't much use as a farm dog.Quote:

I have a somewhat unique perspective on this as I've seen what happens when dogs run at large just like Chris , like I've said in a different thread no trapper wants to catch a dog , the attitude that if your dog runs off 50m and then gets caught is the trappers fault is a little off to me , you took the risk when you decided to let your dog run , I've owned dogs all my life and had more then one get run over by a vehicle , I knew that was a risk the minute I unsnapped the lead and I didn't have words for the vehicle operator ,waftrudnir nearly every acre of crown land here in the province is someone's trapline , so I don't understand how a responsible owner wold risk their pets safety , it's not like trappers tie up the land all year or anything of that sort , so tell me why pet owners want trappers to change but yet aren't offering anything in return expect the attitude that I will do what I want
Another landowner here had 360 acres. He also had a 3 acre active beaver pond within it. He walked with his dog down the many trails throughout his land with his dog running ahead of him, off the leash (at large).
His dog was a young golden retriever. Guy would throw large objects to get the dog to retrieve, trying to train the dog for waterfowl hunting.
As he was out for a walk around near the beaver pond, he heard the slap of a beavers tail. The dog took off full tilt and jumped in and started to swim toward the beaver, thinking his master threw a stick in the water. The dog owner yelled and screamed at the dog but all the dog wanted was that tail that kept slapping repeatedly.
All of a sudden the beaver turned on the dog. Scrapping and fiercely biting the dog in the face etc. The dog was wore out fighting the beaver and by the time the beaver was done with the dog, it was in poor shape.
Eventually the dog owner took the dog to the vet and cost him a huge amount of money to save his dog. The dog was blind in one eye.
Think this doesn't happen much? Wrong!!
i think the average person would accept the resposibilty for this, especially a dog that is 50 M ahead... but trappers also need to be resposnaible where they set their traps... dont set a trap close to a trail that is regulary used by public, whether they are walking their dogs or just out for a walk themselves... not only a danger, also not good plubicity where somebody walks by and sees a dead animal caught in a trap on the side of the walking trail...Quote:

the land owner was so mad at the beavers that he talked to a trapper about trapping the beavers out completely. Trapper said he would have to talk to the OMNR about getting permission to trap nuisance beaver.
Dog owner did go in and OMNR said no to permission to trap the beavers and furthermore said that he shouldn't let his dog run off a leash, adding the law states dogs are not to run at large!!!
Can't bubble wrap your dog but you sure can keep him on a leash !!!
Wow CL I comeback after a few days and see your still at it Funny you mention many in this thread are the loud minority yet methinks that the title belongs to you .good on ya . Lol Anyways that area of yours seems to have a real issue with straying dogs Yup and a very dedicated dog warden . I'm going to assume you don't get along with your neighbours very well eh ? Personally if a hunters dog or a neighbours dog comes in the yard for the most part I just catch them up and return them home or tie them up and call them . Nobody around here calls the law dogs in to handle a straying dog . I don't like them running deer either especially in winter but I'm not going to have a hemmorage about it . As far as that dog that was caught in a trap near a trail that now has over 40 thousand signatures attached to it . Well it was very sad and unfortunate accident that was preventable by both parties although even as a trapper myself the trap was poorly set . Either not set at all there or at minimum been set in a dog proof manner which is easily done .
I don't understand this thread. Maybe it's the terminology..... off leash , at large .
Weather permitting , we are hitting the woods to morrow. Both setters will be off leash to hunt. I'll know where they are and they'll know where I am. They won't chase a deer, because they have been trash - broke to deer. They won't be biting any person we might come across.
I take full responsibility for whatever might happen realizing that when you unleash a dog , lots can happen -- coyote attack, broken leg, caught on a barbed wire fence, get giardia from coon pee, accidently shot , caught in a trap , lost ... etc.
Until someone can tell me how to use hunting dogs and keep them on a leash , that's what we will be doing to morrow. I hope that's o- kay.
(I'm sorry there is no leash on the dog in my avatar , but she wasn't going anywhere. :) )

cant run at large on his own 360 acre property now... man farmers are gonna take a pounding LOL, not sure why a trapper wouldnt be allowed to trap a beaver on private property either... unless out of season, in which case would have to wait for the season...

Just to add; I have a Bow stand about 600 yds in the bush from that spot, and in the 12 yrs it has been there with a trail cam over a bait pile I have maybe two pictures of him (or his predecessors) at the stand. And they were taken shortly after I had been out to throw down some corn, so he had followed me out and then followed me home.
Very few working breed dogs have any interest in chasing wildlife...why do you keep harping I need to tether him to the barn or walk him on a leash...???
