It is so cold that if you throw a cup of boiling water into the outside air, it will form a big cloud! This works best with temps of -25 and colder. Try it out but be careful.
The difference between the air temp and my hot tub water is 80 degrees, Celsius!
It's so cold, that when I peed, ice cubes hit the ground.
Had to take the 2 dogs out this morning at about 610am to do their business and when you opened the door there was a "fog" forming with the rush of warm air hitting the cold. The thermometer said -34c and the Weather Network said -42c with wind chill….The dogs were real quick….
While cleaning the car windshield this morning a coupla birds flew overhead. I'm think'in that one took a dump because a coupla solid chunks of what looked to be bird crap hit the hood. Frozen bird turd, man I'm happy it didn't hit me.

At our place this morning at 8:30 a.m. it was minus 28 , have no idea what it was when the wind chill is factored in .
When I worked for Toyota Test and Development at the cold test facility, we use to do this with the Engineers that would come from Japan, LA, Arizona, etc, they got a big kick out of it. They'd make a fresh pot of coffee, run outside and toss it up in the -40+ weather and record it and send it to everyone back home.
A friend was bugged by guys in Texas about the winter. They asked what it was like to live in Canada in the winter time.
He told them to get a parka and boots and climb into their deep freezer at home.
Just about sums it up.
I hate the wind chill crap though, it has not yet been colder than -30C in Ottawa this year but the media makes it seem like it is -40C every night.
Wind pulls moisture from the skin and cools/drys the surface. If you cover up then there is not affect of the wind on your skin, just increased transfer of heat from your body through your clothes to the air that is moving past you.
They should just say it is -25C with winds of 15km/h, or "Windy" rather than tell people it is -50C outside when it is not.
As -50C most cars are not equipped for it and their washed fluid/coolant would freezer, I have never experienced that cold in Ontario, even Kapuskasing where my mom grew up does not go below -50C (-47.2C is the record).
We've gone colder then -50c twice so far this year. And once while up in Moosonee at -52 when we landed.Quote:

Coolant is nothing to worry about. For the first 10 degrees or so below it's freezing point it more or less thickens and gets a few crystals, within scones of fire up the heat thaws it. Heading out and driving through some brutal cold nights the washer fluid always got a dose of methyl hydrate to further it's freezing point and keep the lines thawed.
Was out working most of the night last night and when I stepped out of my machine into the wind for a leak I wasn't long getting back into the cab.
-26 when I started my truck this morning. Went into work but the equipment wouldn't start. Thank god there was no wind or it would be pretty bitter.
Shoulda stayed home and went hunting. Looks like a great day for that.

was -34 here to at 6.30 am, bit of a north wind which cuts right through ya...
id believe TR about the temps up there haha, couple years ago we were up in larder lake fishing, dang thermoter never made it higher than -35 the whole weekend, and the wind chill had to be into the 50's... never got much fishing in lol
My outside temp gauge inside the car was at -3 when I started it up this morning in the garage...
As soon as I drove out of the garage I never saw it move so fast to -26.... Didn't even get a block away.

It was -26 when I got up this morning at 7AM,colder than a French hookers heart. Well,it was,at least,for down here in litlle Miami. LOL

I did the boiling hot water experiment a few times this weekend with the kids. They didn't believe me when I told them I could make it snow.
I was ice fishing on Simcoe, out of Jackson's Point and will say this, didn't see 1 person fishing outside a hut. that was friggin cold and didn't really get much warmer as the day progressed. wind was a killer......my moustashe froze walking about 100' from truck to Bonnies Boats office.

apparently it hit -47 with the windchill in my parts sat night, was -35 on my thermometer... got a call from a buddy, he was in toronto, and apparently his long farm driveway got blown in with snow and his motherlaw couldnt get out, and asked me to go and blow his driveway with his tractor... well my gas truck barely started, no chance of his old diesel starting, he insisted i get it done, and told me to give her some ethier... well got her going, didnt sound like it liked it but she fired lol

Have all brick house so not real concerned with it getting into my walls but icicles started forming under the soffit so that was a sign that it was getting worse.
People call me crazy but I love this weather - have even been out at night running in it when it is -30 windchill.

Well one good thing about the cold..... Someone decided to shut down work today (too cold-I thought we had colder days but I will take it) so after I take my son to school off hunting I will go... :)
A little side note tip...
I woke up this morning to a cold house, furnace stopped working.... I went outside and cleaned the exhaust vent (full of ice and snow) and it started up again......
Keep those exhaust vents clear of ice and snow or your furnace may not kick in...

on a serious note, was -35 here this morning, block heater quick working on the wifes car this week of all weeks, so was taking it in this morning to have it checked, good thing its got a new battery, it started right up...
