I don't think this is an isolated incident. How many more out there that don't get caught?
right it is not that he could not hunt in that area it is just that he was not allowed to shot a doe ,if it had been a buck he would have been fine ,lessoned learned .Dutch
I wonder who turned him in, the phone tip included all the info....should be a good story behind the whole sorted affair.
The article says the call came in the next day....maybe a butcher ??....a so called 'friend'....his wife ..LOL...
Funny it happened on December 15, 2014. That same evening I was sitting on the ground with my crossbow, does all around me as close as 7 yards, no venison in my freezer and no doe tag for the unit I was in. It never even crossed my mind to take a shot and I'm left with a pleasant memory of watching those deer trying to figure me out. Different choices, different outcomes.
It sure sounds like a Paul Harvey "The Rest of the Story" event.
I could see potentially making a mistake however it seems way more to the story than we're given.
I just can't believe he'd be so dense as to be contravening a game law with intent AND then involve a butcher.
To me, he intended to break the law, was caught and the fine seems to reflect that. Any thing else and the judgement seems excessive.
Depending on he availability of tags in zones, its not to hard for people to figure out what's going on.
In the end of 55B (which is a tough doe tag draw) there are guys who apply for doe tags in nearby zones (58,59) and use the tags in 55B. It's not a well kept secret and if you saw one of these guys with a doe, the assumption that it had a doe tag for a neighboring WMU would be correct 95% of the time.
If you are in a hard to draw WMU and guys are shooting tons of does, its not too hard to figure out what's going on.
If it was dropped off at the butcher whole with the hide (and tag) still on it...well that is just one step below turning yourself in.
^Definitely a lot more tags available in 49 than 53 but both were sure things.
Or he got desperate as the season closed in those WMU's on December 15th - the day before the illegal act took place. Either way, BUSTED for breaking the law and probably lying which is why he didn't get the Set Fine of $200.
OR he just made a bad call on a deer and shot a doe that he could have thought was a buck,
I have thought a doe was a buck a few time with the way she was standing and a branch was above its head. Not that is makes it right but not to make make the guy sound like a criminal.
I always apply for an anterless tag....just in case. I've almost screwed up a couple of times in really thick brush. :ashamed: It's a good insurance policy.
Where that guy was, he's literally right across the road from the WMU boundary to 49. Stupid move but he knew what he was doing.

One of the older guys in our moose camp (70+ yrs old) shot a young bull with a very small rack, early morning and raining, he thought was a cow, we called the MNR and met them at the kill sight,I think it was a $300 ticket at the time, but there was no loss of licence and he could continue hunting, the moose was confiscated
,there is no way the butcher could know were the deer was shot or anybody ells unless he told some one were he was hunting ,or someone seen him ,it is a fine line to cross some times it is just across a road that units change ,was he in the wrong yes ,could it have been anybody .well most of us know the laws and choses to follow them ,it would not be to hard for most of us to cheat a little if we wanted to and never get cought ,I am a believer that land owners should be able to harvest a deer with out a tag ether sex anytime in season ,with legal tools to hunt in that area ,land owners feed the deer all year and suffer the damage of having the animals in there crops ,I also think any land owner who puts in a clam for damage done by wild life should have to allow hunters access to there land to hunt before ever being paid for damage ,the elk herd is a good example of this ,any ways I am getting of topic ,he got cought so he will pay the price ,Dutch
Some of the guys on here say there are butchers who demand to see the tags etc and log the information...that's why I mentioned it. He may have been suspicious....regardless it was more of an off the cuff comment anyways :)
I agree with you landowner ideas..from the hunting perspective and from the idea that if they are making damage claims.
My neighbour claims lost sheep to coyotes but won't let me hunt them on his property. I was hunting the tree line and he wasn't to happy with the idea I was aiming across his feild in the back 40, well away from all his and my livestock.
Bit of a dimmer that man...LOL
If you don't know for sure, 100%, don't shoot.
He shot a deer he did not have a tag for, then he tagged the deer and took it away in his truck. Someone else had to call in and get him nailed for it because he obviously did not call in himself.
Sorry but this is straight up poaching.

HOW CAN ANY BOW HUNTER MAKE A MISTAKE BETWEEN A BUCK OR A DOE!
1st identifying as a deer, then waiting for the correct time to draw the bow, then waiting for the correct shot angle,
and late season was probably over a bait in a leafless environment.
My thoughts only 2 things could have happened
1 He shot the deer knowing full well what it was ... or
2 It was so dark that proper identification could not ne made.
conclusions POACHED!
He plead guilty... of course it was poaching, he admitted he done wrong and didn't try to weasel out with some lame excuse :)
I was just wondering, with so many guys knowing so many guys on here, if anyone has heard the whole story...who turned him in ? It was the next day as a result of a 'Tip' on the snitch line.
