Do you hunt with him ? Does he get a good run at least every other day or so ??
Bucket of dirty bird.:)
My Dad and I bred beagles for many years. When my Dad's gas station business went bankrupt we were POOR.
My Dad would pick up the left -over food on Fridays from the food trucks that went to construction - they would normally throw it out on Fridays.
The dogs and the kids did just fine on old hotdogs, meat pies, wilted salads, apples, stale raisin buns etc.
Dog still had good energy and good coats.
That's my general opinion on the dog food hype of to day. :)
Stick with it then Sharon. That sounds better than PP. LOL!
Like I said good genetics makes all the difference in the world.
Yes he getts a good run it's like he's board with it if u give him a new type he will eat the first bowl but that's it
Then don't worry about it. Put it down in front of him and if he or she doesn't eat it within the first 5 - 10 minutes pick it up and don't give him anything until the next day. He'll soon learn that if he doesn't eat it right then and there he's going to go hungry. Might sound a bit harsh but it works.
I use to do that with my racing husky pups or picky adult dogs that i purchased from another musher. They needed to eat and stay hydrated on the trail and they quickly learned to scarf it down. A picky dog can easily perish on the trail if it hasn't been taught to eat on command.
I'd also suggest getting him a better food than puppy chow.
I have one fussy eater too. I've waited her out more than once ,but she'll go 3 days without eating. That's as long as I'll go without having her eat , so she won. I buy a good dog food and cheap dog food cans. I mix well a couple tablespoons of the cheap stuff + the good stuff in the bowl with water and problem solved.
Not to say I am right, but if it was my dog I'd feed Pro Plan Sport.
At 8 months he doesn't need puppy food anymore, not that he ever did, but that's another thread. :)
That's how my Mom feed us....6 kids and no one ever refused a meal more than once ..LOL...
I never put much thought into dog food till I started to read posts on this forum….way to many worry warts. A vet once told me, feed appropriate to age/breed (puppy food, active dog , senior etc) and make just make sure it has the “Veternarian seal of Approval” on the bag…that means avoid the cheap WalMart Old Roy ….but you don’t need the Science Digest either.
Waw thanks guys these are all great ideas and suggestions I will get him onto a better adult food type and see if that help he always has food in his bowl he just eats wen he wants and is under weight will definitely try the warm water remember doing sumthing like that as a kid at the hunting camp
I'm going to get a better type of dog food and try that he's still on puppy chow so hopefully the change to adult dog food will help he always has a full dish
It's actually a trick breeders use to slow the dogs down from gulping their food..
It's not the quality of the food (kibble), dogs don't care how much you spend on the food, if it tastes bad to them you'll need to find something they like....adding a sauce (water) works well to make kibble more appetizing and fun to eat....every thing tastes better in a gravy :)
"They " say adding water reduces the risk of bloat too.
I have always added at least a cup of water to dog kibble and still do to this day when feeding. As a breeder and racer this was the only way to teach and keep dogs hydrated while on the trail. Quality meat based dog food never had to be doctored up because it wasn't grain or vegetable base. Your cheaper foods would most definitely have to doctored up with gravy(yuck) because they are soya, wheat middlings, corn gluten first ingredient base dog kibbles. When you feed a product like ACANA it is also fit for human consumption, no gravy needed. lol
I always add water to the feed to ensure the dogs are being hydrated when we are on the road and as others have said, it forces them to slow down and reduces the risk of bloat,
Thanks guys this is great info
I highly recommend you bring a fecal sample to the vet and have checked for parasites if your dog is thin. I brought a new dog into my kennel many years ago and he passed a parasite to my entire kennel called hookworm. It was devastating and cost me a lot of money to rid the parasite. A fecal sample is a relatively inexpensive test.
Thanks I will definitely bring it up with the vet on his next visit
