This is my first year with my new camp and I have a question for those more with more experience. I have several cans of tuna, beans, soups etc, as well as peanut butter of course, at my camp. I am sure it has frozen and thawed repeatedly over the last month. Is this food safe to eat or should i just chuck it?

Your problem may be more about mopping it up when you get to camp!! The peanut butter will be O.K, but cans may explode or at least pop a seam. I wouldn't eat , regaurdless.

I will third that....cans go right in the trash. That crack/split in the can is so small you would never know. The food will not flow out but the air will get in.

The tuna surely toss. As far as beans and other canned veg goes I wouldn't be afraid.

As an experiment take a plain water bottle and let it freeze solid. After it's solid thaw it. Give it a shake once it's thawed and see what's inside. It will look like a snow globe with light flurries.
Also some of the can lining may contain bpa or other chemicals that can cause health problems and estrogen. Last thing you need is a bunch of estrogen.
I'm not a complete worry wart with food. I still can heat beans when working in the bush. Probably not the best thing to do.

So bpa (in can linings and bottles) has estrogen qualities it does not cause estrogen. If you poke around on the web you will learn that people believe bpa has estrogen like responses kinda like a synthetic estrogen. I just learned that too. I always though bpa caused estrogen to increase.
I read somewhere that if you freeze cans or bottles you disturb the plastic lining containing bpa releasing more of it therefore ingesting more. Do my little experiment above and it's believable.
I don't know that you can find a can that is currently manufactured that doesn't contain a lining. Most manufactures use the bpa type lining. Maybe when daddy Trudeau was in office we still had metal cans with no lining. I don't know.
With a chemical that acts like estrogen.....no thanks for me. I know women are a but crazy at times but I trust them to deal with estrogen (or synthetic bpa estrogen) more than the guys I hunt with.

The white particles you see are minerals that have come out of solution due to the freeze-thaw cycle. They pose no danger when consumed. Here is a quote from Health Canada:Quote:

A myth that keeps coming up is that you cannot eat meat that was thawed and re-frozen. You can do this and it is not unsafe if the temperature of the thawing was below the danger level for bacteria growth. I'm with you oaknut on meat. I push the limits on leftovers and meat. I have never been stung. My father in law left the freezer unplugged when he was helping us reno our basements. Everything was thawed but cold. I kept it all including a lot of venison and some bear. My wife didn't eat any of it at first till she saw I didn't die. I'm still here

The freeze thaw is not a problem but the hot sun on the game, leaving the hide on, rinsing with water and having temperatures of 10-12C during the day will rot meat in a hurry. I remember guys telling me venison fat does not taste good, it is not the fat but rather than fat rots first, we were eating rotten venison fat and that is why the flavour was so off. Last year I got a big doe, hung it in the garage which is insulated and holds a nice cool temperature in October. I shot it on the Saturday and butchered it on the Monday, no need to trim off the fat and no "wild" taste to it at all.
