fall salmon fishing

the salmon run is near some parts it is here already i know some of us anglers look forward to it i my self enjoy the fight and to get some eggs, some times i will kept one, i know lots of us hate to see what goes on , i also hate it as well , i try to do the most i can to help stop it, most times if i catch a female i usually squeeze the eggs out and leave some in the female and release the female , i see to many females who were caught eggs taken and left there what a waste if you wait till they are ready to spawn you can squeeze them out , i see people stepping on them and just kicking them in not taking any time to revive them, how is it they are king on the lake than garbage once there are in the river and yes they are going to die anyway , but let them do their thing , if you want to catch one do it the right way in the mouth , and if you want to eat it great , if not release it , and treat it with respect , we don,t treat trout this way why these big powerful fish which we enjoy to catch .

I completely agree! I mainly fish the eastern tribs of Lake Ontario. Who doesn't enjoy the fight these powerful fish put up. Now I am strictly catch and release and take the time to carefully revive the fish, but the carnage I witness on the river nearly every visit is unbelieveable. Taking a sponing female and squeezing a ziplock of roe out is one thing, but gutting a female for the skeen and tossing her on the bank is another. Just a friendly reminder, be courteous to the fish and your fellow fisherman (because we all know it is going to be crowded). There is more than enough salmon for everyone to have a good time.

It's actually more than being courteous it's about being morally and ethically sound. I'm pretty sure the MNR states that an animal harvested, wether hunting or fishing must be fully harvested and consumed. Or let the thing go. The fact that people would do that shows that maybe we need to tell the MNR to force a competency test to make sure people aren't doing these things.

We humans are pitiful sometimes and these stories REALLY get my blood boiling. I stopped creek fishing because of too many idiots out there. The final nail for the coffin was a group of idiots wading into the bowmanville Dam (you know, the one with signs everywhere saying NO FISHING!) and netting salmon with lights. I almost went and tore them a new A-hole but decided I didn't want to spend time in jail so I walked away and called the MNR. I save the number on my phone so when I see idiots I call.

It's my duty as fisherman, hunter to report morons and will NOT hesitate to give people a piece of my mind. Sorry for the rant but I get really upset when hearing these stories.

Folks, unless you are willing to keep a fish and eat it throw the thing back with respect and dignity. I want my daughter and grand kids to be able to catch a fish one day and not have it be a virtual fish or in a museum

It's always a gong show on the eastern tribs. I don't care if people want to keep a limit of salmon even if just for the roe, it's a put and take fisheries, but I hate when they slit and dump. If your going to kill the fish take it home use it for fertilizer or anything else but then to kill and dump at the river bank. Along with all the other garbage that they leave behind. Port hope has so many garbage cans that you have to walk past to get back to your car and no one uses them. And also I've never understood the deal with salmon roe, personally I think it sucks to use for trout bait

I agree roe sucks for fishing thats why i fly fish for trout and catch more then most people in a day it is a put and take fishery but the garbage is so disgusting i dont go near the rivers until the salmon are gone and the people with them just wrong

i agree with everything thanks i go for the fight and the site of watching them go up stream and to see what i can do to educate and make a difference , a lot of beginners out there some don,t even know the difference between a male or female that if you wait till they spawn you can squeeze the roe out ,how to catch them, i use flies mostly , roe ,even worms ,another thing i don,t like is night time fishing ,when do these fish get a rest from us , i just don,t like the idea i figure nothing but no good is going on , i understand everyone should have time to fish sure ,but what about the fish give them a break

Last year was my first year fishing for salmon and steelhead, I was shocked at the sights as many of you have also witnessed. From Gutting the fish for eggs and tossing the carcass into the river to using large trebles with massive weights to snag. I was flyfishing as well as float fishing and with my float rod I only ever used worms or beads and I was very successful. I understand if you want to eat the fish to keep. I don't understand the harvesting of the roe especially with the cheap prices on beads and the fact that leaving the roe for nature to take its course only helps improve the fishery which is what we all want to begin with. So if yo have never tried using beads maybe give it a shot 20$ container and you only lose the bead if your line breaks so 1 bead could mean 20 fish, worth a try.

Most guys don't keep the roe for bait, they keep them to eat, as most of these guys are European and its considered a delicacy in Europe, salmon and trout caviar goes for $80-120 in most European stores, not even gonna say anything about sturgeon caviar prices.....

I've seen a group getting charge for just gutting the fish and dumping it. And I have also see a person who got charged for taking Atlanitic salmon. Serves them right.

I don't think too many guys eat the roe. Most use it to fish for bows...then they eat the bows. I guess they also get a thrill of hooking big, powerful fish in a foot or two of water ??? One salmon would provide a year's worth of roe to most fishermen; unfortunately some guys harvest it by the bucketload and use it as chum, etc. etc.
For those only interested in roe, I would suggest heading to the fish cleaning stations when the charters come in; often the roe is discarded in the fish cleaning process.

Why is catching a 20lbs+ fish on 4-6lbs test out of 1-2ft of water lame and unsporting but catching a 3-5lbs fish on 30-50lbs test out of 1-2ft of water not?
Just sayin, you can dump on anything if you want, just don't see the point. Fish for what you like, just don't crap on others if it's not your thing.

Very true. I use brown trout roe for rainbows and a few French charter guys in port hope load me up for a few beers.

there is a huge market for selling roe in the city .. it is very very expensive...

Lots of guys eat the roe, any Russian guy you see (basically all the fishermen that take the roe and throw the fish out) eats roe. They go at night and snag a bunch and keep only the roe, they don't even take bows, they catch fish strictly for roe. The other guys do use it for bait but not that many people use salmon roe for bait and even if they would, one salmon has plenty of roe. On the other hand if you're eating the roe, roe from one salmon will barely last a week...

there is a guy who visits the ganny daily during salmon season and he takes his 5 females a day every day he live in Kingston and all he wants is the eggs ..

this is great some good points made where to get roe good idea , people eat the roe , never crossed my mind , people selling roe , not to smart , but were near a big city so easy to do, so i think with this rain salmon will be in ,so if you can be the on look out for what we all don,t like to see and don,t be afraid to speak up or just call mnr or you can call local police they will come as well thanks and lets see if we cann,t make a difference

so some salmon up at bronte but not enough to make it worth going yet, how is it bowmanville, wilmont , and port hope all have good runs yet nothing down here their only maybe 30 miles north of bronte , it doesn,t make sense the only good thing is bronte and the credit are open till the end of the year at least parts of them while the others close sept 30

Hey I'm pretty sure the season in 17 is open all year south of the CNR railway (most southern track) and Lake Ontario :)

The east end of Lake O has been outfishing the west all summer...ask the lure pullers. Various theories why...temperature, baitfish etc.

Try fishing a trout bead behind the salmon. You might just get the surprise of your day. I agree that it's a gong show out there with the salmon. I gave up using row of any kind over 20 years ago. Beads, pinkies, jigs and flies will catch trout better than roe on most days. I'd love to see a roe ban as bait in Ontario. It might stop the slit and dump idiots in the fall.

It's a lot more rewarding to tie up your own flies, jigs and to paint up your own beads and then catch a trout. Personally, I think roe is way over rated as a trout bait.

When I first started out backlashes were common for a while.... One big one that you can't get out and your going home with only 50-75 yrds. You'll never need 200-300 yrds, but its always nice to have the extra just incase. 200 atleast anyway. IMO

I'm sure I'm gonna get dumped on for this but, I've yet to see the day running beads out fishes spawn. I fish an unhealthy amount, and steelhead are my ultra favorite, I run everything in the arsenal on any given day and although there have been days where spawn was waaaay off the menu, beads were nowhere near the magic ticket. I've seen many days where flies, flatties or pinkies, were blowing everything out of the water but beads, nope. Don't get me wrong, they work, and I've done decently on them on occasion, but the hands down replacement for the real deal? I think not.
That said some people take far to many females then they possibly need, and based on the amount of chumming I've seen in the last few years, I figure that's why. Chumming ticks me off just for that reason alone, plus I see people tying bags that are almost always to big for any given water condition. I can easily make 2 fish last an entire year. Freeze in small batches, tie smaller bags.

Read my earlier post carefully. Beads, pinkies, jigs and flies. Not just beads. And I do very very well without roe. Presentation is the key.

Yes roe works very well sometimes but I can't be bothered with the mess and storage of it. No Thanks. I can't afford the cost of roe so I don't use it. Like somebody said here you can use one bead all day if you find the right one.

I can decide to go out at a moments notice and be out fishing with artificial baits and catch a ton of fish. All my catches are catch and release. I get a ton of satisfaction catching a trout on a fly/jog I tied or a bead that I painted.

I don't have any problem with roe fishermen, just the pigs that slit a pile of salmon and them chum cup fulls weeks later. Yes I know chumming is legal.

Port Hope is making changes to control the carnage. Maybe one day the regulations will just prohibit organic baits for trout and salmon. Stiffer fines for poaching, snagging and over fishing would be great too.

No such thing. Illegal to sell roe unless you are a certified aqua-culturist. As a bait dealer I need to have a receipt handy to prove where it came from. Anglers can harvest and cure their own Roe for bait. It is Illegal to allow fish to spoil therefore you can't leave the carcass on the river banks. Take it home and find a suitable 2nd use not consider waste. Compost is acceptable.

it is illegal to allow fish that are edible for human consumption to spoil..... the salmon that runs the river is not edible for human consumption

How many of you keep and eat the salmon ? If I was a betting man I'd say slim to none eat these salmon. They are full of holes and basically swimming zombies. Catch and release is the way to go. I haven't kept a fish in YEARS. I want my daughters generation and my grandkids to be able to go and catch fish.

If we keep this up the sport of fishing will be merely a urban legend and a story we tell our grandkids of what fishing was.

It's always after the fact that we realize maybe we should have done something. Reactive instead of being proactive. I'll do my part and keep this as a sport and hobby. Fish can stay in the water. The Idea of keeping fish for food to support a family is ludicrous and doesn't make any sense financially. After rods, reels, gas and various other costs to this hobby its not exactly ground breaking savings here.

Sorry for the rant, however, this topic hits a nerve for me and I got so sick and tired of the idiots littering, snagging, netting and generally being nasty people.

As for the MNR. Forget it. With lack of funding and shortages of conservation officers that is a losing battle. I haven't seen one in years. If you strive to become one you'd be better off trying to run for prime minister.

you make a point they seem like swimming zombies they are big powerful fish put in a small river shallow holes they haven,t got the room to show their true skills they need room to show you a real fight and these small pools their easy targets and clear water where is a big fish like that going to hide no where , they will try to move away from lures or bait , in fast current hide along banks almost disappear ,follow these fish to their spawning grounds watch them for a while than judge them , i only catch near long deep sections so i know i am going to get a fight , as far as them closing places well if your a pig and disrespect places by leaving garbage ,they give you a toilet you fill it with fish heads serves you right

The "swimming zombies" are the easiest to catch and nobody eats them, however, let's not forget, there are coho salmon in the river and the "swimming zombies" are chrome until they are in the river for a long time. After they go in the river, you can still find chrome fish but of course, the half dead ones are the most plentiful.

anytime i have seen salmon up in pools there on the go all the time and when you have 10 people fishing one hole its a chore just for the fish to swim around without getting hooked and when they try to leave the pool some people get in their way which is illegal and it takes skill to get them to bite you have to get the bait right in front of their face or sometimes they just take it or you can just draft in the pool , i always watch the fish their eyes you can tell when they want your bait or they just want to swim around it and thats how i catch salmon i don,t force the bait in the fishes mouth it their choice , i know lots of people who eat them , they do stay chrome for a while in fact 300 came up the credit their all gone male and female and not a mess there no garbage no dead bodies my hat off to them so i guess those people want the fish not just the roe

Salmon " fishing" that takes place in rivers is a complete joke. How can anyone get excited about snagging dying fish that are stuck in some ditch with a foot of water in it?

Let's be honest, at least 95% of the fish are either lined by accident or snagged intentionally. Maybe it is possible to catch unspooked fish on Flatfish etc but who does that? Hardly no one. You can't. There are so many people lined up to slice these things the only way you can "fish" is to drift and see if your line wraps around one's head. And before someone says "no way, all my fish are hooked in the mouth" let me tell you, anyone can line a fish and hook it inside the mouth. It's not like it takes much practice. Half the salmon are so deformed by now they can't even close their mouths any more. Any fool can hook one inside the mouth. Every single day, hundreds of people do.

Eat the roe? Are you kidding me? Ok, maybe a handful of people might try eating the stuff but the majority are grabbing it to use as bait, or to sell it as bait. That's fact.

Eat the salmon? Ha! That's a laugh too. You would be better off to eat your waders. They'd be less rubbery, have less chemicals in them, and probably taste better too. Anyone eating these things is shortening their life span with every bite.

The roe part is where you're wrong, my background is Russian and 80% of people on the rivers right now are Russian, especially at night, I know this because I have seen it, ALL of them keep the roe, for only 2 reasons, first is to eat, (search up salmon caviar online, I have eaten it and also keep roe to eat, I don't use salmon roe for bait as it is garbage compared to trout roe). The second reason is to take the roe and sell it, they are only after the eggs, sometimes you will see males with partially cut open stomachs, as most of them don't know how to tell hens apart from males. As for eating the fish, why not take a chrome fish? I caught many chrome as a dime kings and cohos in the middle of August out of an Ontario trib that had red meat and tasted very nice. Of course almost noone will keep a boot to eat but chrome fish, especially cohos, for sure. I mean I'd rather take a gbay fish but a fresh Ontario fish ounce in a blue moon won't kill anyone, hasnt killed me that's for sure! As for everything else you stated most of the info is correct, yes most do floss the fish, out east anyways, they will hit a lure, especially cohos and chrome kings but that's rare and usually while they're fresh, like in the middle of August, when I fished and almost no people on the rivers, loogans don't come out until the fish are in so thick you cant cross the river without stepping on them. Now that all the loogans are out and about, I'll only fish north shore Huron tribs or at the very maximum gbay tribs.

while its good to know your people are so honest they have to fish at night i guess so no one sees them and how they fish and try to catch all they can and don,t care maybe if there are fish to spawn again what a proud people you are don,t even know the difference between male and female even more reason to fish at night i am sure there is other people who do this as well, but people got to start thinking if we harvest everything where are the fish going to come from years from now this is a sport not a lively hood

while at bronte today caught one in the mouth not flossed nice and chrome , we found 30 more there weren,t taking anything would move out of the way of everthing i guess their not just zombies after all they can actually think maybe theres hope yet , thats if these night time fishing russians and other people don,t get them , i being to think there is no hope for fish around tronoto it just as some low life people who don,t care about the fish just them selves there is good in all people we just have to find it and the people have to start showing it

Well thanks for the down to earth opinion you have about salmon fishing you seem highly educated on the topic. I was excited to read up on it for next year but now i guess i could eat my hip waders instead and be better off like you say.

Anybody got some positives to change my mind here? Symmetre makes some valid points it seems and opened my eyes to this but is it really that bad? I like to eat salmon but not if I have to chew my teeth off for it. Salmon jerky is fun to make maybe if there tougher itll be better for my candied smoked salmon? Or are they just caught for novelty?

This boils done to ethical fishing habits. I have seen both sides of the fall fishing season. From "PIGS" that rape the resources with little or no regard for the future of fishing in the GTA ditches, to those that enjoy the experience and hooking any fish is a bonus.

It is the "fishermen" with 20 pounds of roe in a bag, chuming later in the fall that gets to me. The snaggers and flossers that brag how much roe they have stored at the end of the season that are destroying the fishery. The drunken "camp outs" that kill everything they catch. As an old friend of mine says all the time, "Ignorance can be fixed, but stupid is for ever." These type of behaviours is what causes private clubs and private properties that ban fishermen, to spring up in the GTA and surrounding areas. More fishermen and less water to fish. As this rape of our resources continues then there will be more closed seasons and sanctuaries and the wonderful fall fishing we now have will be a distant memory.

Angus has its local permits. Port Hope is changing its fisheries, they've had enough. Barrie has put in restricted parking at fishing spots. This is just the beginning. As more and more communities fight back against the PIGS that abuse our past time, and the garbage they leave behind, fewer and fewer opportunities will be left for the next generations.

Education is the only way to turn the tide. Our governments, local groups a,d fishing clubs must take a stand to protect the immense and valuable fisheries resources that we still have. I would love to see a TV campaign that promotes ethical use of outdoor sport resources. Heavier fines and more COs would help, but education of all fishermen as to the ethics of outdoor sports is now a must.

I go fishing at night because I spend my days with my kids and I can't get out until night and there is alot less people there at night and alot less fishing pressure at night...and theres noone there to see when i get skunked again

yes true you could go after 400pm are you just going after roe no thats what i was reffering to the guy talking about the russians who just go for the roe to sell or eat sure there is honest people who go at night but alot of dishonest people as well , and the salmon i caught tasted great

Sorry to pee on the parade, but yeah, that really does describe the reality of salmon "fishing" in most tributary rivers. Go look and see for yourself. It's absolutely pathetic.

It doesn't have to be that way though. If you want to catch salmon properly and have some fun, try casting big Flatfish, Shad Raps or J-13 Rapalas off piers at the mouth of the spawning streams, or in the slow water up to the first rapids.

Or try fishing bigger water, like the whirlpool at the Niagara. At least there, and off the piers, you have a chance of actually catching fish. Its a different experience than the shallow little creeks where they get chased around night and day, and half the fish have broken-off hooks and flies stuck in their fins.

Salmon from bronte tasted great........now I've seen everything

Anyone that would put that poison in there body is nuts. And the worst part about it the charter boats promote it

People put much worse in their bodies and survive (crack, cocaine, heroine etc) although from the water quality reports I've heard you might be eating trace particles of all of the above thanks to our giant urban centers (cancers) and their stellar waste management systems.

i have eaten trout from lake huron ,erie but this this fresh green salmon it was small 15 lbs tasted great , fried in oil some seasoning , any ways when you catch salmon the right way which i think no one has the time to do ,to easy the other way , its a real thrill and in waist deep water and a long run your in for a fight thats what i do , sometimes it happens quick others times it takes all day and when fish are fresh thier not deformed or half dead where do you guys fish maybe after a month up stream .i go to because these are living things and i want to do my part to help them to have a fighting chance i sat on a pool of 30 sun people came by groups of three ask some guy what was going on they looked at me and moved on i guess they know i put up with no bull if your going to catch when i am around it maybe flossed but at least it was in the mouth

Dude just let this thread die off like the Salmon do. Your killing us , seriously.

Here are some facts:

- I know people who take salmon home from the rivers to eat. I wouldn't, but it does happen.
- Salmon will attack a bait, seen it with my own eyes. Black flies one year worked amazing.
- Most people (I'd estimate +80%) floss or snag (intentional or by accident) the salmon, who are not activily feeding.
- There are many, many, many slit open salmon on the river bank every year. The only obvious explanation is taking the eggs. That is 100% illegal (letting fish to spoil). Don't care if it was caught fair or not, it is 100% illegal.

My speculation is there's 3 groups of people at the rivers this time of year:

- the honest fisherman, who desires to catch a salmon or following trout the fair and square way, and will be patient for hours to do so.
- the unethical fisherman, who is impatient and will snag salmon to have fun or to get a fish or mostly its eggs.
- the uneducated (and sometime unlicensed) fisherman, who doesn't know what is right and wrong. Mostly there to get the fish, not just the eggs.

The first must suffer, because of the second and third kind of fishermen. Unfortunately the second and third type make up most of the population found by the river.

Nothing's going to change until one of the following happens. (1) strict CONTINUOUS enforcement during this time of year OR closure of the rivers altogether with sufficient enforcement to monitor, or (2) the majority of the fishermen on the river become the first type, and when a number 2 comes in, he/she is made to feel VERY uncomfortable, and knows that type of fishing doesn't fit in, or when a number 3 comes in, everyone steps in to educate (in a peaceful, respectful manner) - shows them how, what to use, etc.

POLICING or RIGHT CULTURE. No other way in my mind.

Well what is happening is more and more people are realizing that silting fish open just for the eggs IS NOT ILLEGAL and that is why they are doing it

Mark - please don't confuse what is illegal, with what is not enforced properly. It is 100% illegal to dump fish. Do not ever pass on any other message. Enforcement is another thing, and if you see it, you can video it and send to a CO to use as evidence. Enforcement can be done by anyone.

I like to skin them and make salmon hats. I wear them when river fishing to blend in. Salmon camo.

I don't. Do it but have seen and sent number of photos he'll even stood beside a co and there is nothing they can do NOTHING you boys may want to look at the eating guide of Ontario. They sample all the fish in Ontario and they put the recommendations out. Then you have to relies they only take a sample of the best meat just below the dorsal fin. There is no a court in te world that would convict let alone a warden write you a ticket.

Good to hear that I am not the only one that does that

this is hopeless as the people who fish they don,t care about anything just catching fish maybe some do ,but most see salmon as something just to take what you want rape the fishery don,t care if anything is left i have seen it all the time take all the females maybe some more will come maybe but this happens with browns to and the snagging just as bad when will people realize you have to leave something to spawn or are the future salmon all coming from the hatcheries , even seen females eggs squeezed out and left to die , people trying to get a salmon to bite hes so scared he tucked along a bank trying to get away , i am glad its over for another year
