So i would like to see how $10 million in renovations can be justified for 24 Sussex Drive. I am sure i could build one hell of a NEW property with $10 Million or many smaller ones:D prospective contractors must be rubbing their hands.:rolleye:

Government can't do anything inexpensively (and on time for that matter) - but that is A LOT.
ETA: From the CBC. 2008 dollars? Should be about what, 20 - 30% more by now?
In the 2008 auditor general's report, the National Capital Commission said the home hadn't had major renovations in 50 years and needed $10 million of work.
$1 for Contractor and $1 For me ?????????
And apparently it will be fine, because the budget will just balance itself and the money will materialize out of thin air. He is a spoiled child with no moral centre.
Lets all light up a doobie and enjoy the ride man, I'm riding shotgun !
Pretty sure you could demolish the old one and build a modern replica with state of the art materials and techniques for less than $10 million. Probably be built in half the time with a far more appropriate layout/blueprint. If they are claiming $10 million then it's really $20 million. But what the hell. He told Canadians he had no intention of balancing the books in any of the years of his mandate and they gave him a strong majority. Canadians have no problem blowing taxpayer money.
Aw come on guys there's 22 rooms in that house. Didn't you hear he is going to open a bed and breakfast to pay the debt off...
I hear Wynne has a windmill ordered for its main power source. Ottawa is part of her kingdom.
It probably has Heritage designation and yes they have to follow the rules. If it calls for a slate roof or cedar shaker roof because of the Heritage designation then that's what it will be. Same thing with the windows and doors etc throughout the house so it's consistent with the time period it was built . That's actually a cheap renovation considering the size of the building and 50 years of maintenance neglect. I would love to go through it and look at what 50 years of neglect looks like and hand out a tongue lashing to the Property Manager and maintenance staff.
Hate Trudeau, but don't understand the comments blaming him for the repairs needed or the budget mentioned.
It was reported numerous times during Harper's reign that Sussex needed major repairs and he said "no way!", not wanting to be blasted for the expenditure.
Remember for the last 10 or more years the PM refused to allow money to be spent on the place.
Might a well take the time and fix it up right. Kinda hope it drags on for more than 4 years
Not Trudoughs fault. But not value for money spent. Bulldoze it and build a new one.
The Prime Minister of our Country should not have to live in an ageing dump.
When the Head of State of another Country visits and there are cold drafts, leaky roofs, asbestos dust from the walls and substandard electrical wiring-- what will they think? That Canada is an over hyped, mickey mouse country that can be easily pushed around. That we are a weakling wannabe on the world stage. Too many think that already. We don't need to to compound the lesson with a disgusting hovel for our Prime Minister.
I loath the Liberals and their promise to tax me more and send the nation deeper into debt. But the home of the Prime Minister is not the place to make budget cuts. 10 or 20 million is nothing in the overall scourge of deficit spending about to happen.
Burn the place to the ground and start over...this heritage crap is just that...CRAP....let's hope TruDoper is in it when it burns!!!!!!!!!! He probably did most of the damage when he lived there with his father and promiscuous mother with all the bands she did!
You say heritage is crap..... do we not use that as one of our reasons for hunting?
Agree with you OddMott. Its been known for a long time it needs major repairs. Harper didn't want them done - either because of the optics (or as my liberal friends point out, that when he became PM, he didn't know how long he'd be there, so he didn't have the renovations done because he didn't want to miss his living at 24 sussex because of the renos).
I can find a lot of things to about JT - but this isn't one of them.
Thanks for jumping in YD. Those points are exactly what I was going to make.
Managing properties and facilities including some under a heritage easement, I can say that I wasn't shocked by the price tag, as I looked at the scope of work. It's hard to throw the Property Manager from the NCC under the bus, as I know most of these issues were identified decades ago, and fell prey to "Deferment" due to the Govt of the days budget processes.
The advantage is that if the PM(E) doesn't take up residence, the work should proceed fairly quickly.
It's been approved before the election ( the Reno budget ) so not truedopes fault il give him that. And technically it's still a crown owned house so lizzy should have to pay the bill
I have more then enough to eat at home
Yes but people still need to be held accountable especially when it comes to the health and safety of the residence putting off renovation work that is needed to be current . Also keeping in mind the energy retrofit programs that can be taken advantage to upgrade the entire residence. Lets face it Hydro is not coming down and will continue to soar. Accountability at all levels of the decision making process when deferring work for 50 years in writing.
As others have noted, I don't think this is something to get up in arms about. If it needs the reno's, it needs reno's.
My point.
Who do you think wears the pants in the house.
The naïve fool who, while he has his dads charisma doesn't have his brains and who cant go a couple weeks without making a fool of himself, and whose greatest accomplishments in life is a short stint as a drama teacher or camp counselor?
Or this young lady who has accomplished quite a bit, has faced some adversity and prevailed?
Me, Im betting she wears the pants and more and will be looking after the home front. Privledged and spoiled? yep. But she also seems quite real with a decent head on her shoulder.

I think I have to agree with Maureen McTeer:
A one-time resident of 24 Sussex Drive says the prime minister's official residence is in such a state of disrepair that it should be torn down and replaced with a new structure that will make Canadians proud.
The $10-million repair bill does not include funds to improve the building's interior design, or beautify the home to make it the centrepiece of our country's collection of official residences, McTeer said.

Price tag is 10 to 150 million according to the story I listened to the other day.
Turn it into a museum and build a new facility.
I'm sure once pot is legalized and taxed the cost of the renovations will be a drop in the bucket with the millions of dollars of new pot tax coming in. :)
I really question the $10M. What reno could possibly cost that kind of money when a new residence could be built for half that amount. Somebody has been smokin' something, somewhere.
That's allot of Pot Tax collecting to pay for it ! Let the partaay begin !
^^Holy shyte - a $69,000 dollar heat and hydro bill in 2012? And the cliff it is on is eroding? Bulldoze it.....
