Hunting with the Savage 10ML ii

Our annual Ontario controlled blackpowder week ended yesterday with the last of 7 tags filled. We ended up with 5 bucks & 2 doe's. It was a really great week for all of us with good times & great weather for a change. A few swings & misses but that is to be expected with the smoke poles. I got lucky again this season & took 3 bucks for the 5 day hunt (6 point / 7 point & a nice mature 8 point). Here is a pic of the 8 point I took hunting on the ground sitting in the woods against a tree becasue it was way too windy to be in my tree stand. 30 yard shot with my Savage 10ML ii o yard recovery.

Just 3 bucks? Lol jk, what a week congrats. So would you say the savage is a big upgrade over the omega you had?

Many advantages to using a Savage smokeless gun.
No cloud of smoke when you shoot.
No swabbing between shots.
You use less powder per shot. I used 44gr.
Accutrigger adjustable to just over 1lb pull.
Amazing accuracy!!

it is a bit heavier than the Omega however the extra weight is well worth it.....

However , he knows that he has he best when the opportunity comes for a very long shot, he doesn't have to worry and wonder if it will do the job.

Some miss the whole point of black powder hunting... Eventually those savages will be banned by mnr for use as a muzzleloader they are no different than a rifle which was what was banned in the first place in populated hunting areas and replaced with shot guns and muzzleloaders.

theres a reason some U.S. States classify a muzzleloader as having a flint ignition...,

I'm one of the ones that prefers shooting with a percussion cap, patch and ball and lots of smoke out of my .45 Kentucky...but I can see the desire (fun) for some long range (400yd) shooting with an ML, so the ML10 fills that need. Eventually I may looking in the Remington Ultimate to develop the skill for 300 yd shooting, impractical for hunting here, but fun on the range and you can scale it back for the 50 yds shots.

I still have my 54 cal. percussion Hawken style that I built on an "Sharon Barrel Works kit " extremely accurate , but the reason I switched to smokeless was that we hunt in the early Dec. hunt and one year we had so much snow , snowed pretty heavily most every day .
On about the 3rd. day while it was snowing heavily I had 2 misfires due to dampness getting in and around the percussion cap even though I use a "cows knee " piece of leather to try and keep the area around it dry.
It was a bit exasperating to hear "click" replace that percussion cap with a fresh one and hear another "click" and then watch an 8 pointer bound away from about 60 yards.

The Savage has yet to fail, rain or snow , even though my longest shot is only about 112 yards [lazered ], I know it will do the job out to 200 yards and a little more "provided I do mine ".

We don't have black powder seasons in Ontario, we have muzzleloader seasons. What style of muzzleloader and the type of powder and projectile used is left to the individual to decide. If it was decided only percussion cap or flintlock guns could only be used, the majority of guys currently hunting muzzleloader seasons would be out of luck. Inline guns dominate now.

Hell of a difference to a rifle. I have never loaded a rifle from the front. It is a muzzleloader just doesn't use black powder is all. Yes they are accurate but so what.

MNR isn't banning these guns either - where did that idea come from?

Well said. What is important to me is consistent accuracy from shot to shot. If I do my part using a good rest I want to hit exactly where I am aiming. I am not in to wounding deer & having to track them all night for miles only to lose them in the end. You can keep those old flint-lock guns that might work on a good day... :)

Good job on those deer! How did the 5744 do at the range? Was that what was used in the deer?

Jeff, have you chrono graphed that load? I chrono'd 42gn with 250ssts at 1900, pretty slow, I'm wondering how your projectile expanded, clearly it worked ok at 30 yards, but I am wondering at longer ranges how they expand

The 5744 was flawless on the range & in the field with great accuracy. I used 44gr of the 5744 with the Hornady .300gr xtp magnum with the MMP high pressure sabot. Thanks again for the powder!! It made my hunt much more enjoyable....

I never had the time to chrono the load I am using. True all my shots were under 30 yards & to be honest it's becuase I hunt in my archery spots & generally don't need to shoot past 50 yards. :)

Nothing like taking a canon to a knife fight eh? What are you using for projectiles again?

N/m just saw your other post, I'm seriously wondering what your speed is like. I used 55gn of 5744 I know I'm crazy, and got 2300, with 44 you must be 1700-1800 with a 300 gn plug.

No idea on the speed all I know is the results of the shot's on the 3 bucks I shot were devestating. :)

Buck # 1 broadside double lung dropped on the spot.

Buck # 2 broadside shoulder shot ran 30 yards & fell over.

Buck# 3 hard quartering to me shot entered in the neck went through both lungs & heart. Dropped on the spot.

All shots were complete passthroughs with good expansion.

I am not that worried about speed after seeing the actual results...

Heck my Micro cross-bow only shoots areound 310fps with a 400gr arrow.. LOL

I have an inline and I have a percussion cap and have been muzzleloading since it started in Ontario. The reason rifles where banned in southern Ontario was due to some questionable shots being taken in high density urban areas and fear someone would get shot. The MNR in response made may areas shotgun and muzzleloader only in addition to archery.

since then modern advancements in sabots and in line muzzleloaders is yet pushing the distances of what hunters can shoot increasing the risk of richochets or shooting towards non hunters whom may not be aware of a hunters prescence. I know everyone here knows when hunting seasons area but many in the public don't and many more don't even know there is a muzzleloading season.

the savage in my mind crosses the line as to what the intent of the MNRs restriction on rifles was attempting to accomplish, I know for a fact MNR is aware of this as my significant other has worked there for 15 years, owns a muzzleloader herself and is well versed on this topic.

Better ban slugs, and slug guns too if that's the case.

Well Savages have been out for 14 years - not exactly new so not sure why the MNR is taking an interest now....

Rifles aren't banned they simply can't be used for deer. I can use my 270 for coyote etc....

These MZ projectiles fly like a falling meteorite so comparing them to a rifle does not make any sense. At 300 yards with a rifle I may have 4 or more inch drop or so depending on caliber, velocity, and bullet. I play a lot at that distance. With a MZ your looking at a hell of a lot more never mind the fact that speed decreases very quickly the further you go given ballistic coefficient of the bullet. Again like a flying rock. At 400 its in the ground and basically out of gas but that 270 still has a whole lot of range.

I am striving for 300 yard capability with the 10 ml and my other smokeless. There is a lot to trying to make this happen and I'm not there yet.

I have 200 yard buttoned up but in comparison I can name 4 slug guns that are quite competent at 200 yards without modification. Can they match the savage accuracy? - not quite but they will do that range well. Again not exactly new so why the concern now?

I personally haven't seen an advancement in sabots for 10 years unless you count the Federal BOR system which is not recommended for smokeless as per Federal. It certainly won't fly any farther.
