So a few months back we got a new dog a Shollie (German Sheppard and Collie mix). The dog knows it's name and inside the house it listens and plays very well. It will obey commands to sit, come here, lay down etc. But once she is outside off a leash it's another story. She seems to just want to play and ignore your commands, she won't stay at all or listen. What can we do.
As long as I can get my hands on the dog , that is what I do. I call the dog to come , the dog ignores, I go after the dog and make my point.
This is best started when the dog is a puppy. Never call the pup unless you are going to get up and go after it as necessary - few nights in the snow in my socks even. :)
Solution #2 - when the property is large or you're out in the fields - is to use an e collar. It is just another tool - a very long leash.
I have the steps I use in introducing the e collar that I could send to you if you decide to go that route.
Shollie thats a good one. Sharon has given good advice. Get your self into obedience classes.
Sounds like you never finished your obedience training. Whatever you teach your dog in commands and obedience in the quiet, calm of the house in a one on one scenario needs to be "proofed" with distractions. If the dog will sit when you ask inside, will it do that when outside, when a cat walks by or kids run by?
As Sharon stated .... Don't ask the dog to anything if you are not going to enforce the command. Unless it is playtime that means outside obedience is on leash or check cord so you can enforce the come / heel command. Once the obedience has proofed inside, outside and with distractions, if needed you could look into an e-collar. These collars are used by trainers in many venues (not just for field work) and if you are unfamiliar with the use and proper collar introduction, find someone who can help you with collar introduction and collar conditioning the dog.

This is the crux of it. The house is full of known knowns (to borrow from Donald Rumsfeld) but as soon as you go outside there are all kinds of distractions, especially for a young dog that is burning to explore the world. It's only natural for the dog to ignore you.Quote:

Still very young and easily distracted , as suggested by others, sign up for obedience training as soon as you can , and keep it up so your pup doesn't develop bad habits that get ingrained into into it's daily routine and are then very hard to break.Quote:

At 4 months it is just a puppy. Dakota hit it on the head - you just haven't completed obedience training. Put a long lead on her and don't allow her to make the wrong choice. You need to deliberately do obedience outside, giving her a command she knows when she's bored isn't even close to being outside. There are a million things more interesting than you in the outdoor world. Find a way to be the most interesting.
Obedience training everyday for short periods of time and gradually longer training sessions as the dog matures. Keep it fun with lots of praise ! Remember your dog is still just a baby at four months of age and a 1 year old dog is only 7 years in human years. A 1 year old dog compared to a 2 year old dog with consistent training from day one can be a remarkable difference. I work my 16 month old lab every day for a minimum of 15 minutes and retrieving drill days 30 mins to 60 minutes twice a week. Change up your short training sessions from inside your house to a park, Petsmart, beach, tennis court , bush lot, farm with animals to keep it interesting and an added distraction. Come means come ,sit means sit, heel and no means no.
read some books on dog training it'll go a long way for any future dog. perhaps should have invested time and effort before the purchase? my shepherd is a dream and obeys all commands. I have her trained to get me a beer from the fridge and she never went to obedience training. Getting an electric fence is a cop out. But if you do not understand canine behaviour formal obedience training is for you and maybe the other gimmicks which will lighten your wallet lol.Training never stops and knowledge of dog behaviour is going to make a world of difference for you and your new best friend.

As mentioned, you should sign up for obedience because it will serve you and your dog going forward.
Try working with a clicker and a long line secured to a tree/post, etc. The long line initially sets the parameters and nothing more. Your dog earns getting more freedom through compliance rather than discipline.
I'm betting your dog will respond marvelously to the clicker.

I,am no dog expert but some behaviour,s in a dog are just in the DNA.In your puppies case you have the German Sheppard which was originally breed to guard over flocks and the collie which was breed to herd farm animals.As such this is the type of dog that wants to range freely and do its assigned jobs.Watch any collie at a off leash dog park and they are busy trying to round up the other dogs.So I think your puppy might be a little bit of a challenge as a puppy but the good news is that a dog that age is like a kid,the brain is maturing and it will grow out of this behavior. The other good think is that both breeds are highly intelligent and can be trained.I would follow all the advice given,train the dog in a place without distractions,use food as a reward.When the time comes and its out of the puppy stage then maybe go to the E collar with the buzzer and reward system or step it up to the e collar and shock.Quote:

A couple of things, but to build o points already made.
One of the biggest issues I've seen with dogs outside, when they ignore commands is the distraction factor. A lot of this is remedied by getting the dog outside as much as possible. If the outside world becomes quite familiar to them then much of their distraction is gone. Open the door, let them ramble around every time you go out. Take 10 mins and do a different drill every time. It benefits you both.
The command "Leave it" is crucial. You can train by treats ( reward), or simply praise, which many dogs are happy with as well.
having said that, I also have an e-collar. Have rarely ever had to use the shock feature. Simply tone, long tone, vibrate, and once...shock. Now it's very rare that the dog ever even lets me get to vibrate before coming to heel.

This is why those of us who train for advanced skills (multiple marking, running blinds, quartering, etc) whether for hunting or running hunt tests or field trials learn the basic skills in the yard (in the OP's case in the house) and do the proofing of the skills out in the field. It is also why we try to get our dogs into as many locations as possible so that they will learn to focus on us and become team players and ignore distractions and suction factors found in hunting and test situations.Quote:
