Just got back from Lebaron in Ottawa. As usual they don't have what I want. The staff told one of the customer at the cash that they will no longer accept returns next week because they are going through a mass restructuring. Another source told me they are closing.
With Cabelas opening today in Ottawa, the competition will be too tough.
Lebarons and poor service, and no stock has to eventually kill them off.
Shopped there a few times, in Montreal on St. laurent too, service was poor to bad, always gave me a hard time on returns, or no service. With sail and cabelas now here, maybe their restructuring is a for sale sign, they will surely loose business. With more outdoors stores we'll most likely get some good deals.
I have it on good authority that all LeBarons stores will be closing. The substantial sales will begin this Monday. Happy shopping.
Worst website I've ever seen I'm sure contributed to their lack of online sales which you need in this day and age. Now with the new Cabelas in town you can order anything off the .ca (not .com) site and it will be delivered to the store for pick up for free.
I heard the same thing is happening at all the stores so my bet is that they're going titsup.
The website is brutal in today's web world. Here's hoping that is what is being restructured.
I have been satisfied with the physical stores in Markham and Mississauga (the only ones I've been to). However I've never needed service or advice and only go a couple of times a year max.
One less competitor doesn't make things better for the consumer.
Back in the 90's when they were pretty much the only folks in town, I spent a lot of money there. Yes they were brutal to their customers. As soon as other options became available to me I drove right pass LeBarons.
I hate Lebarons too. Actually used to get flammed on here pretty good for calling them down. Anyhoo we won't go there. I'll say this. Watch a one card monopoly. I already see it in Cabelas. The little "we own you now" mentality. ie tell all your existing customers to come for "VIP" treatment, where you get in a day early. Guys. That's their way of getting the choir in and out and rid of. Then the deals go to the general crowd we still have to convert. Little stunts like that play out like the GOD complex panasonc electronics got. How they doing now?They could have swallowed cabelas. So it can happen with them too if they feel too much notion to play games
Lebarons had countless chances to address their issues. I know that more than a dozen retail experts in the outdoors and hunting industries tried to reach out to them to offer aid over the last 15 years.
They ignored every offer of help, just like they ignored all warning signs from their customer base.
I highly doubt they're restructuring. If they are, it will be to compete in a non-hunting/fishing market.
They won't be missed.
Long live the other smaller stores who truly do their best to put the customer first.

I almost don't want to go in there and get any deals, I suspect that their sale will be 5% off.
I remember being in there and had a list of about 50 items, not 1 was in stock and since I lived in the city that a store was in then refused to sell it online for me and would not put through a store order for me. On top of that I wanted a paper copy of the catalog for the hunt camp and they had the nerve to tell me there was a $2 charge on the catalog.
They can beg me to come in there and take their stuff away but I don't think they will get a dime of my money.

I second that. Le Baron service was never great but I've gotten some awesome deals there that no other retailer would match. Went to the Cabelas VIP opening on the 21st and found it underwhelming. Half the stuff I was interested in wasn't there and I walked out with a neck gaiter and reloading dies I coulnd't find elsewhere.Quote:

Ya, I've got to admit that my favorite place to shop is LeBaron's Markham. Like so many stores you have to get used to their quirks like being sold out but the people at that location are great. Lots of people have had neg things to say about the gun room but I did very little business there. What I liked about the place is that the people who work there are REAL employees, you see the same people there every time and I've built a relationship with them over the years, they are knowledgeable good people to deal with, the turnover is very low. I've gotten great service from the camping and fishing sections over the years and find them to have the best prices overall. Great on exchanges and warranty and I've found them always willing to transfer items from one store to another. Their online format is terrible and not a big fan of having to pay for a catalogue BUT I assume that's the type of thing they do to keep prices down. I will surely miss them if they go and truly hope that this is just the same type of nasty rumour that crept out when BPS opened in Vaughn. The prices won't be better at Cabela's outside of some good sales and the service is what it is, probably will be better at the beginning but...
Just got back from the Markham store. The sale is on already.
I did get some deals on ammo and my friends bought boots at 50% off.
No real "deals" as mentioned here already and I did not expect anything huge myself.
As the week progresses there MIGHT be more deals appearing on hard-to-sell items.
Right now they have 20% off fishing and hunting stuff, 10% off ammunition.
I got a couple of good deals there.
I'm forced to agree with most of the comments made about LeBaron's (at least the Markham location).....Vince and Bing have been there since Pontius was just an air cadet, Vince in particular is great to talk to, if he doesn't know the answer to a question, he'll say so, and then try to find out for you. LeBarons should have invested in technology years ago... its not just that they stuck to a catalog model in the face of competitors that are fully invested in the e-commerce game, but also their oft-cited problems with not having what you need in stock. That's just poor inventory management. Either you're running the local gun shop or you're playing on the national field, and you have to decided which is which and invest appropriately.

LeBaron Ottawa has never imho been any good at prices or customer service. I mean down right rude at times...just terrible more than once. Cabelas will sink them. From my family's opinion. It's about time.
I bought my first shotgun at LeBarons in 1984 and still hunt with it. At that time they had a store at the corner of Yonge and Cummer in Toronto which I believe was their only store.
I went to their Mississauga store once or twice over the years too. So, this is a business that has been around for 30+ years and I personally bought many fishing, camping, and hunting items from them.
During the same period of time numerous outdoors shops opened, and then went out of business!
Being an econo-minded outdoorsman meant that I probably spent more money at Canadian Tire anyway.
Then came Wal-Mart, Bass Pro Shops, SAIL, and Cabela's, and of course that wonderful thing called online shopping ... and like most people, I bought what I needed when I needed it at a place and price that made sense to ME at any given time.
Still, LeBaron's stayed in business and I went there whenever I was in the area and had time to kill. Their service, prices, and stock availability was not perfect, but they were there when and if I needed something. i will not really miss them after they're gone, but I will miss them being there just the same...
Here on these forums we read about bad experiences with virtually every business that is trying to serve our community and make a living in the process. Many people who complain don't know what it costs to pay rent, invest in supplies, pay bills and pay employees PLUS constantly try to remain competitive - and give us discounts.
Let's give LeBaron's a respectful Good-Bye in the coming weeks, because in my humble opinion they have earned that respect by just sticking around for more than three decades.
I visited the store in Mississauga on occasion and found that the items they had in stock were almost always cheaper than Bass Pro. I did buy a couple big ticket items there when they were having one of their tax free sales, but I always called ahead and checked their inventory before I hit the road. I know they always got a bad rap for customer service, but when I went there I always knew what I wanted and whether they had it in stock.

Decent selection. Both high and low quality selections.
It always puzzled me they didn't try to raise funds to re-invest back in to the business with modern inventory and checkouts and a decent website.
They also carried worms/roe/leeches if you needed them.
I will miss them.

Yeah, I ws just thinking of that. Now that was an outdoor store.. way before on-line shopping. I bought my first guns there as a young adult. About Lebaron's, the absence of an on-line presence is a killer for sure. Even more frustrating is a catalogue that over-promises and a dealership (Ottawa) that never seems to have what you're looking for. But yes, at times, the deals were worth the visit. They were not the greatest I agree, but I am sad to see them go - bought a lot of good stuff from them that created great memories.

I'll set a reminder in my calendar to come back to repeat it. I shed no tears for LeBaron. Cabela's has nothing to do with it. I will support the local mom and pops shops and other independents before going to the big box stores. How do you figure it will be a monopoly? There are lots of independent stores like Epps, Gagnons, etc who have an online presence, and are great to deal with. There are also several big retail stores that are out there as well. When I was younger, I used to shop a lot at the Mississauga store. The first brand new gun I ever bought came out of there, and I still have a ton of gear I bought from them over the years. Sadly though, their customer service was poor, their catalogue became a joke, and their online presence was awful. Looking at their website is like surfing the web pre-2000s.
They saw what their competition was doing, and chose to ignore it. Sad that they are closing, as they can indeed be called a Canadian Icon in the outdoor sports, but they can also be used as a business case study as to how a solid business can fail if it doesn't keep abreast of it's own market.

I was just at LeBaron Ottawa and everything is 20% off with some clothes & footwear more discounted. They said they will incrementally increase the discount in coming weeks, until the store closes. The lineup to pay for stuff was rediculously long.
I had a couple of hours to spare at lunch today, so I decided to scoot down to Le B's in Markham. Yup, big sign on the front of the building "Business Closing - everything must be sold". Sale is being run by an Auction House, typically this would be arranged by a receiver not the normal operator of the store.
I didn't intend to buy anything, I just thought I'd go see a couple of the guys in the gun section that I know, as well the line ups were about an hour long to cash out (another indicator of why they may have been having trouble, they don't scan to check out, instead they have to fumble for a price tag, manually make the entry on the register, and if there is/was a discount figure that out on a calculator, probably twice the labour dollars to process a sale than their competitors).....BUT, they did have one left of a stainless Ruger 10/22. I hummed and hawed and ended up taking it, the savings were enough to at least partially pay for the long cashier lines, about $375 taxes included.
I said goodbye to the one acquaintance that was there (the auction management, in their wisdom, only had one man behind the counter, not the 4 or 5 that they could have used) and bade him farewell and good luck. I've never had a bad word to say about the people in the firearms section, they've always treated me well.

Likely not a factor in their bankruptcy: you need to have a certain number of people in the store regardless, so the labour savings at point of sale don't always give you reduced labour costs. But another great indicator of how they failed to invest in technology and keep up with the times. That's what killed them, I think.Quote:

I enjoyed going to the Markham location, a nice quick stop, prices were in line with everyone else. Crazy website though, that had to contribute to killing the business.

Gonna miss Sacha in the gunroom at the Mississauga store as she really knows her stuff and was quite friendly. Paul who has been there as long as I remember was always a friendly guy as well but ya, they had some real dinks work in the gunroom over the years.
Any one know what % the firearms are discounted at ??
I actually walked in to the Ottawa store to see how good/bad the savings were.
Best service I have ever experienced at Le Baron, they had the same amount of inventory too, it seems as though closing made them better to the customers.
Maybe I am bitter but there is a reason they are going out of business and it is not just Cabelas.

recently visited the mississauga location, no deals to be had there 20% off majority of the store very few 50% marked down items.
Dropped in and was tempted to buy Tenzing backpack however doing some quick googling on my phone found it was priced 10% higher than the competitive price, so with the 20% I would get only get 10% off a demo model with possible parts missing = no sale. Walked out of the store with nothing.
Similarly, I found most items 10% to 20% higher than everywhere else so people saying they are breaking even with the 20% off makes sense. Except they are final sales and if you find a piece missing, you are out of luck.
10% higher makes sense as in recent years they hiked everything that they did not mark "special" (on which the 10% member discount would not apply) 10% higher to make up for the 10% discount people got using the Member card. Funny it seemed like half the inventory was marked "special" so that 10% discount would not apply. Scam!
In the early days the 10% discount really meant something - in recent years people needed it to break even. People caught on to this however and I guess this is one of the reasons people like me went elsewhere.
Also they converted a lot of their sales floor to Canada Goose merchandise, moving away from their traditional hunting and fishing goods, attracting a few new "hip" customers but losing loyal hunting and fishing customers as a result.
Sad to see them go but RIP Le Baron.

I agree. I took my time and walked the store looking at everything. Now I know why they went bust. The assortment is pathetic in there compared to the box stores everybody loves to complain about.
There has been a lot of "raise the sticker price, then say X% off", so there are very few true deals. When I went though I was able to find a couple of real deals, and that was only because I knew the current price that some of the other places were charging for the same items.
I didn't see much in the way of price raising. I bought a shimano tekota 300LC for $185 taxes in and a shimano TR200 for $88 taxes in. Your not going to do much better than that anywhere, even Amazon when they go on sale comes in at a higher price.
Yes the store was old school, lacked a computer inventory system. The staff in Ottawa were good to deal with. I did purchase at the store 2 weeks ago, lures 20% off. They are the only store that I ever found Bomber long A's in brilliant orange, bought 4. Never found at Sail, Bass Pro, etc.
They will never reopen, Continental Auctioneers is not conducting the sale on behalf of the owners. I worked in insolvency, there will be nothing left to open with, only store leases with no inventory.
We should really feel sorry for the staff that stuck it out to the bitter end, 2 weeks after Cabela's open in Ottawa they are insolvent, all the staff might have found a job at the competition.
I bought a flat of 3 inch shells for goose hunting prior to the insolvency, could not get them at a better price that I was aware of.
I bought my fish finder there in the Spring Humminbird Helix 7, was not cheaper at the other stores, and for $28.00 I got a further 10% off the price and everything else I bought. My discount card is good till next spring, memorabilia from a business that was the only game in town, Canadian, etc. Sorry to see it go.
Has anyone who has been to the store in the last few weeks noticed any decent prices on climbing tree stands?
Their website was the worst i ever experienced....So hard to navigate no rhyme or reason to the way they had it laid out.... i guess they panicked when they heard bass pro did come to town after all....Its just called Cabelas now! Its hard to compete with stores that have excellent customer service....I ordered a bow quiver from bass pro shops it was being delivered to me in Labrador via ground mail....I ordered it well in advance to get it for a caribou hunt....It never showed up because Canpar didn't deliver ground mail to labrador so they denied shipment in Stjohns NF....I got a call from bass pro asking what was wrong with the quiver....I explained they shipped it threw canpar and my hunt will be no longer be happening....They said "WE will send the quiver over night delivery threw UPS." They went on to say "They will refund the cost of the quiver back to my visa" And i will get quiver free of charge....Next day i got my quiver and I never paid a dime
I went back on Saturday since they just increased the discounts. 25% on firearms, reloading equipment (including powder and other components) and ammo. I bought some Nosler Partition bullets since I thought at 25% off, I should be getting a good deal. I didn't know my prices, and I ended up paying basically the same price as the Cabela's regular price - I saved something like $1 on 100 bullets. So yeah, I stand by my statement a few posts ago - "raise the sticker price, then say X% off". Until they lower the prices further, it is not worth going in unless you really know the prices at other stores.
The only time this will be a deal is once the stuff has been liquidated, and get's sold off to a liquidation wholesaler.
Went there two weeks ago for some new boots,because they were selling well the 50% was dropped to 30% off. The original prices are two high IMHO and the selection was a joke, sizes 5,7 and the odd 13.Waste of time,partly the same service that led to their demise.
Lebaron's is now 40% off on their fishing lures, I helped them reduce stock on a bunch of Lindy, Williams, Moonshine and Rapalas lures today :shades: Still quite a bit of stuff, it seems like their prices went up some before the sale went on but 40% is enough to get me spending on items that are on the "that looks good... they want HOW MUCH" lures.

I was in the area and stopped in the Markham one, everything is 50% off, alot of rapalas and misc stuff. I got some Lindy lures and there is alot less MoonShine spoons after I left :-)
Markham and Montreal are the only ones still open. I heard them say they would be getting the Montreal stuff in next week.
