Didn't the MNR recently admit what hunters and farmers have been saying for years? YES, we have cougars. Please, correct me if I'm wrong.

Ok, you're wrong.
Funny how it works around ont. We're I live these so called mountain lion siteings are always the knew kind of loin they have wings and don't need to eat either I know this because they don't leave any tracks in the snow so they must be flying on their ghost lion wings and they don't leave behind any scatt so this proves they don't eat and that's why they never show up on the 20000 game camera's on the bear baits or deer bait cams a cross ont and they don't get caught in live traps or get it on the rd it's almost like their not hear and as far as the hole Mnr letting them out. The m.n.r. let turkeys go I see those on my game camera the m.n.r. let elk go and we see those around to any how I personally would love to see a fresh track or even better see one hanging on a snare or see one running in front of the Hounds if I ever see one of the ones that don't have wings I'm going to shoot it and hang it up in the front yard and that will help sort out the fairy tails until you get one caught or shot I would not be to paranoid about what sells newspaper's take care and if you ever find a big kitty litter box out in the woods you know u are getting closer to killing the ghost lion shoot strait and good day

I've see. The pics.
Ive seen the pictures of Big Foot as well. lol
It's harder to fit into a cougar suit.
I guess there is not a lot of cougars. So they don't get seen much. Lots of other animals are rare. Have you ever seen a fisher?
I heard a hunter at the butcher shop tell about 15 other hunters that his MNR sources told him they brought in cougars to control coyote population and fishers for porcupines.
He was serious and I laughed in his face. He didn't like that. Dumbest thing I've ever heard.
I know of 4 coyote hound gangs that have hunted his area for at least 30 years combined. Shot thousands of coyotes and foxes and even the odd Wolf. BUT NEVER have they ever crossed a cougar track or seen any sign of one. These hound guys cover A LOT of country if they haven't got onto one, I'd say a cougar isn't around here
What's the captive population of cougars in ont? Maybe they get tired of feeding them.
Cougars to controll coyotes. Lol. Does that work out west?
The MNR may have released some. Because this was once there home range.
The MNR has never released cougars.
However the MNR does admit that there are some roaming around Southern Ontario. Numbers unknown but very low. Where they came from is unknown as well and may be captive ones that were released.
Google "cougar study MNR Trent University". Some interesting info.
Been reports for years about one around the south end of the Short Hills area in Pelham.
I used to hunt a farm N. E. of Fonthill, and the farmer mentioned a few times of one at the back of his property (was a big 60+ foot deep wooded gully there leading north to Short Hills Park, so easily concealable terrain for one).
I had a student in one of my courses 3 years ago who had a woods behind his property just south of Welland, and he showed me photos he took of a black panther in his yard chasing after wild turkeys(obviously an escapee from captivity).
Lived near Midland for 8 years, and one fall there was 3 sightings within a 2 week period of a chocolate brown cougar just south of one of my moose hunting buddy's farm. He also had several fisher around his area as well, and we used to see them occasionally.
They were a major problem for rabbits - we went bunny hunting one morning in the snow on the Xmas holidays on his farm (tree farm - he had lots of small evergreens planted), and there were fisher tracks all over his fields checking out every small evergreen for rabbits. Needless to say, we never saw one bunny!!!
I had a chance to talk to the same biologist whom the Ottawa Sun called ten years ago for an article regarding fishers. He said that the rumour that MNR had stocked them in Easter Ontario is completely untrue, but accepted as fact by a lot of residents. They came back on their own due to a dearth of trappers and LOTS of porkies!
This cougar debate will go on for a long time, until there are good pictures that get more attention. I know there were photos shot of a puma on Lake of the Woods a few years back, and my Mom, who lives a few miles outside Kenora, saw one crossing the road maybe 60 yards from her house. She hesitates to tell people because she knows how unlikely a sighting it was, but I do believe her.
It's difficult, but not inconceivable, to believe that a few are around in Southern Ontario somewhere. Ever notice how you can drive down a road with a non-hunter and they never seem to notice the deer near the treeline or the grouse on the shoulder of the road? People will be even less likely to spot an animal that likes to remain unseen.
I have never personally seen a cougar in the wild but I have seen tracks that I think were large cat, either bobcat or cougar. I know of a number of credible sightings in our area and lots of sightings that I would dismiss as not as credible. The most bullet proof is a local hunter in my area that watched one from his deer stand for about 10 minutes as it prowled along the edge of a swamp near Palmerston. Last year my SIL saw one twice within a week as it walked along the creek behind their house. She saw it once this passed summer with a small one in the same spot. The farm they live on backs onto the Conestogo Lake Conservation Area. A friend's father saw one near Linwood as he was swathing grain about 5 years ago. It walked out of the grain about a 100 yards in front of him and stopped and looked at him before walking into the bush. Two years ago a person we rent a farm from was walking on the sideroad one evening and saw 2 come out of the corn on one side and cross into the bush on the other side near Harriston. Another friend watched one walking through a brushy area behind her house from her kitchen window. This was near Wroxeter. These sightings I find highly credible because of the knowledge of wildlife by of each of these people as well as their honesty and the clarity of their description. I have heard of plenty more sightings in our area that I tend to discount like the neighbor boy who story starts with "I was coming home from a party late Saturday night." Why don't we get more pics on trail cameras? I don't know other than that they have very keen senses and I would believe the population is very thin.

Bugs. You are correct.
Logic applied says there is not a natural/wild/reproducing population of cougars in Ontario.
Cougars are the outdoorsmans equivalent of "urban myth".
But paranoid conspiracy theorists who believe the MNR secretly released cougars can't be reasoned with.
No more than people who know "reliable people" who claim to have seen one.
Show me a body.
Show me a reliable pic that doesn't have a Douglas Fir in the background.
For shure thanks for posting that

Seeing a pair and one with a small one with it means they could be breeding.
It's odd that the population is not increasing to the point that there is more sightings.
I know my friend has a good trail cam pic of one near owensound.
I'll ask for the pic.
The numbers may be real low because this area may be poor habitat.
Some time ago the Ontario Cougar was listed as 'Extirpated', this means the numbers were too few to count. Presently the status has been bumped up to 'Endangered' implying an increase to the polpulation:
Status
Endangered
“Endangered” means the species lives in the wild in Ontario but is facing imminent extinction or extirpation.

I saw one 30 years ago, it was also seen by one other individual, the animal had been tracked by the Michigan DNR entering Ontario, but that was a long time ago and at that point the Cougar was listed as 'Extirpated'.
Could the rumours about the MNR re-introducing the cougar be a result of capture and relocating the animals?
I don't believe they are re-introduced but they were all over Ontario at one point.
There are moose around where I live, I have not seen any or seen the tracks but I know they are there. There are bears around where I live, I have not seen any or seen any tracks but I know they are there.
To just say that a cougar sighting must be that someone has drank too much of the neighbours finest is a huge insult. I have not seen any but I know of a few people who have. One in the big bush of Eastern Ontario, one closer to Hwy 7 and one south of Ottawa. When there is an all beige cat with a long tail walking through the fully mature wheat that is not a barn cat and the long tail says it is not a lynx or a bobcat, what other options do you have?
I ain't got no pic. I asked and he dosent have it anymore.
We didn't think it was that big of a deal because I have had all the proof I need thirty years ago.
Ive seen a picture someone got of one on there deck in haliburton, walked right up with the deck light on. No mistaking it, was right at the glass door. Saw another picture before of one dragging a deer on someones trail cam out near kinmount. I didnt take them or know the people well who took them, friends of the wife and she always showed me when they were shared with her. Nit much input but ive seen those pics and i buy it

Friend of a friend!
Same old (r@p as all other reports of cougars
Where are the pics?
Don't own them, was shown them, didnt feel I needed to own them, saw themy, heard the story, didnt feel I had a reason to get in an uproar, moved on with my life. Nothing to prove her, just saying I saw some believable pictures and didn't seem they had any reason to lie, just showed something interesting in there lives. Not the type of person to instantly call bull to everything I see and demand all the evidence as if I'm some sort of authority on the subject and will need it in Internet court of law later in life. Take it or leave it, seemed legit to me, and weren't circumstances where people seemed like they needed to lie and were trying to show off, just sharing something they had to share
Every once in a while a cougar thread will surface just like the lockness monster. Of course it's possible but were more likely to witness an albino squirrel. More than likely a cougar sighting is an escapee from some idiot having it as a pet.
With all due respect some of the people around hear see cougars so often that they make u wonder if they don't actually have a pet cougar at home .one lady said she feed the black cougar sandwiches right out of her hand and her husband even says he seen it as well sounds like they rescued the cougar how sweet lol I think their is of course the rare chance that a cougar gets out of its cage . Once and a while. But it should not bring reports of cougar sightings across the province I also believe their is a direct link between the increase in the use of prescription and non prescription drugs across ont. And the number of cougar sightings across ont lol

Does anyone actually believe that there are not any around Ontario?
It's definitely a large province to not think there's at least some. And if they are so few is the potential not there to travel far distances in search of a mate or appropriate habitat? And if they are in any areas or Quebec and Manitoba who's to say they don't cross the provincial border? It is just an imaginary line I don't think there is high electric fences to keep animals in their home province :p
And I'm not trying to be sarcastic and I'm no expert but it just seems to me... why not? If only a few why not?
I for one, do believe they're around (at least a few passing through anyway).
I recall a time when I was in my teens, fishing along the Maitland river and seeing what were obviously bear tracks in the mud. I mentioned this to the local CO when I saw him shortly after and he essentially laughed in my face. Long story short, a few years later locals were sending pictures to the Goderich newspaper about bears "attacking" their bird feeders. A few more years pass and finally it was announced that black bears had returned to the area.
...and don't even get me started on Bigfoot....
I talked to big foot today he said there is all kinds of cougars were he lives lol 😂 just one clear pic from say the last 18th 20 years . Of a cougar or a big foot . Maybe these things live every were in ont except were I hunt I'm not saying their is none in ont . I'm shure the Toronto zoo has them .lol 😁I'm heard the M.n.r let them go in the zoo to control ..? ..😂😂 good night

Well they seem to be around or the media are also in on the hoax.
http://toronto.ctvnews.ca/big-cat-ca...town-1.1910607
At my camp I have seen one run across a field near the camp at dusk, returned later from town to see a camp member out on the porch with his rifle,as the same animal came right up under a freshly hung deer on the meat pole. A second hunter saw one stalking after a doe in broad daylight.I have also seen large cat tracks in the snow with a tail drag behind them.A local trapper has seen them
both he saw were black so probably released pets.
I do agree that with so many trail cameras out there we should have some images showing up. I have seen fishers on numerous occasions and even a pine marten and my camp is 250 km from Mississauga. You either believe the results of the posted studies and DNA evidence or you do not.We have a good population of black bears in my area I hunt but in 20 years of being up there including summers I have only seen them about 6 times.
[COLOR=#000000]"OPP Sgt. Paul Zeggil said earlier that the cougar would be moved to another area, far away from humans."With the assistance of the MNR, we’d like to relocate the cougar to a safer location," he said."
Interesting.
because if it was a domesticated escapee, it wouldn't be released back into the wild I'm thinking.
Nice to learn more. Thanks for the links.
That's a funny article. He chased it with a shovel in his hand and roared at it. lol Gilroy that cougar was an escapee, someones wanna be pet that got out of its pen. Again the one at your camp was more than likely another escapee. You would be surprised what exotic animals have for pets right under our noses.
Still a cougar livin in the wild. How many populations of animals are from animals getting loose. Lots.
IN 2005 cougar scat found in Wainfleet bog
http://www.wellandtribune.ca/2014/09...owl-in-niagara
I believe imo only a few wild animals do exist but those animals would rarely come into contact with people. I do believe their are more pet cougars that have escaped and a small probability of that they would survive is low in my opinion. It would be nice though.
I saw a Fisher close up while moose hunting. It was close to 4 feet long, chasing rabbits around, then it took an interest in me. Fortunately it chose to look for different quarry, I really didn't want to have to shoot it. But I do wish I had my camera handy, would have been a good shot with that!
There's lots of cougars in ontario. One knocked on my door a few years ago, been living with her ever since. Try your local bar on singles night, tons of them on the prowl....
Recent pictures from my manitoulin deer camp trail camera
What was in the bait and yes it looks like a cougar except the spots on his belly tell the rest of the story u got a picture of a bob cat that is why it looks so small as well but if it turns out to be a spotted cougar keep the baits going and get the thing patterned and I'm willing to put my hounds on a fresh track then that will sort out the discussion having cougars here would be great and if I found that on my camera tomorrow morning I'd post it on hear right after I dropped about 7 hounds on his tail then I'd tell u all about it so don't let us rass u to much . U see were I live Avery week someone says they saw a kitty cat and it is always a cougar of course and the Mnr let them go bla. Bla. The same old story that sells newspaper's but ì have never seen a single track in the area were I hunt my dogs never tree one we never have one come on camera on any of the 30 plus bear baits we have never caught one in our 200 plus yote snares that myself and 5 or 6 other trappers in the area hang in the woods and bait aswell and not one trapper around hear has seen even atrack in the snow or scatt or nothing we hunt or trap or log in the woods almost every day of the year we drive miles and miles of bush rds collecting hour hounds in bear seson in the most remote parts of the bush we tree bears somtimes 3km from the closest 4 wheeler trail then hike in to the tree shoot a bear debone the thing then maybe walk out a different direction hoping to find a dryer walk out and we never have seen hide nor hair of the ghost cougar so I know their is not any around hear in the 50 km area that I hunt and trap but if one moves in or passes threw hear I will post a picture right away is their cougars in ont I don't know but their ain't non around hear so far over and out keep looking up
