MNRF STill Squeezing Us For Pennies

Just renewed my outdoors card online and as usual I purchased a 3 year small game and 3 year fishing licences. Only this time I was still charged the $9.68 for the card. I know the last time I renewed if you purchased 3 year licences they waived the fee for the card. It could be because I purchased a 3 year conservation fishing licence rather than my usual full licence.

We all need to seriously lobby the provincial government to increase funding for the MNRF. The Liberals are all about the environment (cap and trade anyone?) but the ministry in charge of our land and water is always on the bottom of the list for funding. Maybe they're not as concerned about the environment as they are about raising taxes for their "green" projects. TC

I don't remember the fee for the card ever being waived. When the card was introduced, you paid 6 bucks for the privilege of having a card and not having to deal with paper licenses.

That's the same cost as a trail pass for snowmobiling. If you live in the Southern half of the province you might be lucky to use it 1/2 a dozen times in an average season...

Anyone have an idea what a CO makes a year?
If just 30 people gave 200 a month we could pay a 5000 per month salary for an extra CO.
I'LL dig out my check book to have even one more in Southwest ON.

Most do not subsistence hunt or fish , it is a hobby , if you cannot afford your hobby, find a cheaper one. I had to give up practising cutting diamonds, too many mistakes.

Its not the $180 for the privilege to hunt and fish, it's the fact the government takes our money and spends it like it isn't their own. Just asking for some accountability with how the tax dollars are spent.

Have to renew mine now as well. Trying to decide if I should get the 3 years regular fishing license or the conservation.

Good luck with that..... these are the same D-bags (federally) that have yet to explain where the 2 BILLION DOLLARS went for the infamous firearms registry & (provincially) that have yet to explain a host of "spending miscues" totaling at least half that amount concerning Hydro.

Not every family can afford to keep paying the rising costs of food, gas, clothing, medication, housing...let alone the opportunity to hunt.
If you are going to say something, how about applying a bit of understanding?
Some families have parents who work to pay the bills and they do a fine job of it.
Feeling a bit discouraged at having extra costs thrown at them is one more hurdle they have to overcome.
Unless you are perfect, do not judge others. Compassion and understanding go a long way.

Card has not been free while I have been buying it (13 years).

22 Yeats ago when I worked for the mnr. And spent time on the moose draw and outdoors card project. The card cost 6 bucks, regardless of you bought a license or not. Previous renewals included the card as the fee was redundant with the renewal.

2 generations ago, some of my Family hunted/fished for their main source of meats. They lived in rural Northern Ontario, severe weather left them near home so moose in the freezer was needed. Regulations were reasonable and simple, a big game licence was for a big game animal. Good for a combination of animals (bear/moose), no antler less vs antlered deer. A moose and head were paraded through small towns to celebrate the harvest and no one complained. Fees were low and seeing the strict "game warden" (who was known by name) was commonplace.

Today? Its hard to legally keep a rainbow trout without the "catch and release" crowd giving me the evil eye, I respectfully cover my deer in my box trailer, annually pay $100+ in licence fees/tags.

~How the SPA is providing more and more of the MNRFs funding. Currently around 3/4s.

Some thought the stakeholders group in SW Ontario had "a case", some didn't.

Currently a "problem" be it lack of COs, be it Moose, be it Asian Carp, be it Coyotes, WTs, Walleye, Pike, Emerald Ash, Cormorants, various invasive plants, stocking programs and hatcheries, and on and on and on and on and on and on and on......

The province could double or triple the fees for everything and the SPA still wouldn't come close to adequately funding the MNRF.
How much do some think 60mm or 180mm (if they tripled everything) buys these days
?

Which is why taking them to task for "misspent" pennies is important.
If anyone thinks the SPA can carry the MNR even they tripled the fee's, well I would like some of what is being smoked and drank.

As I see it:
If we are having an environmental crisis owing to climate change exacerbated by human activity, a cap and trade system is not liable to do much to alleviated the problem. It’s population numbers putting demands on the production of goods and services that increase the levels of human activity which ends up generating green house gas. As population numbers climb so does the generation of green house gas activities. So that should suggest the need for something more than a bandage solution like cap and trade.
Cap and trade policy are focused on ground level polluter, ground level generated carbon emissions find there was into carbon sinks in a relatively short time, they only have to fall through a few hundred short feet, even when spued from the highest industrial chimney. On the other hand, the other day with bad weather 4000 flights were canceled, any idea of what level of carbon emissions that amount of air traffic is leaving in the skies over head. Leaving it to find its way into a carbon sink some 30,000 feet below, and how long the descent is likely to take. So that should suggest a need for set some type of carbon emission levels on that industry right now, and not waiting to 2020. Its would seem since it’s all happening high overhead, that it's not capturing much public attention, so let's not go there for awhile.
Now about the $ 9.68/3= $ 3.23/year - So two large coffees..... Big deal! With $9.68 and looking for sales you can pick up about 1 kg of coffee and brew several cups of it. Coffee at one point was 10 cents a cup at a coffee bar, I suspect it still works out to that if you don’t haunt coffee bars, and make it home. Call me frugal but I find the coffee you drink a bit too strong, and I’m one who enjoys a good cup of coffee with a bit of a bitter edge to it.

Please do not assume to know what I believe. I think that the fee we pay for an outdoors card and the various tags are a great deal. I don't ski or golf and many other don't as well. I realize it is difficult for you to grasp but there are people who are low income and yes they find the extra few dollars hurts. The fact you do not see that shows how disconnected you are from the real world.

Hunting today is a hobby filled with ethics, regulations and pride of environment, harvesting game is a bonus. I recall taking my turkey course and the instructor telling us; "anyone who thinks hunting turkeys will save you $, please leave." That's when I knew things had changed.

I want hunting and fishing to be affordable to everyone. I would not like to see my anyone who has a passion for hunting, be unable to afford it. The reality of the situation is that not everyone always has extra disposable income....especially at Christmas.

Hunting is expensive so it's ok if it costs you a little more?

Many in Northern Ontario and even parts of eastern Ontario would disagree.

Well glen, it appears that, with the rising cost of everything in this world, hunting costs are going up as well.
Imagine being the guy who has to choose between a christmas present for his kid or his hunting license. Or the mother that has to choose between monthly payments for her kids braces and a hunting license. There are always those that easily can afford the extras and those who cannot.
Unfortunately.
Hunting is not a cheap game.
Fortunate are those who can afford to hunt, vacation, ski, golf, horseback ride plus provide the basics of food, shelter and clothing for their children.
It is what it is.
All we can do is hope that people who like to hunt, regardless of income, can.
The rich haven't completely taken over this game and as long as we keep the fees within reach of everyone....they never will.
It doesn't take a high IQ to see what is happening in the world around us. It requires an open mind, a touch of compassion and some empathy.
I hope we never forget that.

The poor have it hard enough as it is. I think it would be a disgrace to this country if only the rich could play this game....and I am certain the majority of war veterans, with low incomes, would echo my words.

Yeh I tend to agree with you the real poor generally are not out there hunting. There is a cost in gas to get to a hunting spot, there is a cost in time, there is a cost for basic hunting equipment. I don,t see poor people hunting up my way and its a poor area.The truly poor in town are on welfare and are crammed into small rooming houses. They are deciding if they will use their hydro to heat their units or actually buy groceries. The working poor like local laborers/loggers generally try and get out for a few days for the deer hunt but that,s about it.

If your talking Northern Ontario with crown land in your backyard and no expenses other than walking into the bush I am sure some poor people still manage to feed their families by taking partridge,rabbits. In this day and age most people can get to a food bank to supplement themselves and are not going to starve to death. A Northern trapper probably is the best example of a poor person still
living off the land, but hunting per say is not a poor persons game.

If you ignore initial outlay of equipment, which can be done "cheaply" be it used guns/bows/clothing and if taken care of is amortized over a lifetime....

A decent WT will yield about 100 pounds of meat.Some of it ground, some of it chops, steaks, roast.
If you "average" the cost to about $8.00/lb (cheap imo considering ground beef alone and a decent cut of beef for steak is 20/pd). Thats $800 of meat in the freezer. Good healthy meals which the poor don't usually get, so to suggest its not feasible....
Thats a ton of gas, or arrows or other things the family might need like milk or socks.............


Is it great value for the buck? Yep. A night at the movies for two will cost of $50 for 2 hours entertainment.So thats not really the issue either....imo.

Which leaves the SPA, money they get from us ( and no or few other user groups) and how far it needs to be stretched to do everything......And hows its spent.

Curious, given everything, what do people think it would take to adequately fund the MNR a year.
hire 50 more COs (gross about 60k and after benefits say 80k). Thats 3million per year

When you have enough money, how its spent, what is a "priority", what isn't, isn't all that important. When you have to live on a beer budget..........The SPA provides about 65mm, and these days is about 60-75% of the budget funding..

And yeah, isn't funny how the green champions leave the MNRF and MOE as bottom feeders

Really?? I'm not sure what world you live in. The real poor that live in rural areas may not buy a license, but believe me that doesn't stop them from taking fish and game to feed their families, regardless of open seasons. All it takes is any cheap old rifle or shotgun and a few rounds. And you know what? Sometimes the authorities even know that otherwise some of the kids in those families would go hungry so they tend to look the other way. I know for a fact of one instance about 20 years ago where the mnr was going to do a sweep of suspected poachers and this one very poor family was actually given a subtle heads up before hand. Personally, I applaud the CO who had the common sense to realize that busting that guy wouldn't help a thing except to put those kids more at risk.

I bashed it on its head to stop the squirming. I saw a bit of its brain matter explode, I'm happy that the stupid thing had a very small brain and there wasn't much mess to clean up.
Now it's eyes have taken on a dull glaze and its lips are suckin' wind.
You can probably cut its head off and fillet it quicker than I can.

As a "poor" person I can tell you that it does take effort and some careful planning, moreso than those with larger and more disposable incomes than I.

So I did save up some dough to buy some equipment and to get my licences, but I had to do so over time. I started even before getting licenced, gambling on the fact that I would pass testing and such. Things such as getting a gun case and locks, for example.

And if I didn't pass? Well, there's Kijiji I guess.

At any rate, I did pass. But now I am faced with the cost of shooting range yearly dues (not that I mind as it comes with perks, such as OFAH membership), buying ammo (didn't realize how much one can eat through in a couple hours!), and the gas coming to and from said range.

And knowing that I must be even more careful and vigilant about how I plan, I spend lots of time looking over the Crown Land atlas, topographical maps, researching outfitters (both near and far), and even going on a scouting trip once or twice (last one I drove nearly 2000 km just to go to the crown land's nearby city and so some scouting/footwork of the land). i am trying my utmost to do everything right.

Why? Because I can't afford any kind of ticketing or charges by any CO or police/authorities. I really am one $1,000 fine away from this "hobby" becoming dead in the water (I'd have to sell all my stuff off to pay it).

Does it mean that I'm going to be a stickler for the rules? Yep. Will I be a pain in the *%$ for those who are less careful and more callous than I? Probably not - not unless their non-chalance will potentially also land me in trouble. Will I still be my usual laid back, humourous and easy to get along self? You bet.

Anyway, just thought I'd throw in my $0.02 po' man's cents.

Sagin, looks like you are well on your way into entering the world of hunting. Good for you! The people on here make it look so easy....lots of experience, time in the bush and practice. I'm new too and likely going to be eatin' "tag soup." There is still time left....and my fingers are crossed.

The fees are flat across the board.
Imagine the outcry from some if we had to pay based on our incomes?
Although........it may help to put more CO boots on the ground, create more funding for conservation efforts, get more biologists etc.
If the funds are handled properly.
Like some guys have asked, "What are they doing with our money?"
Collecting more for the administration?

Lots of ways to look/spin it..... because for just a few dollars a day, you get 24/7 police/fire/cleared roads, libraries and public parks to name a few (property taxes) that sounds like a good deal too but it all adds up.

Oh ya, In just a few months, I can enter a good quality paved road in the Toronto area for just few dollars a day too. lucky me. :)

Lots of cheaper ways to get into the city. Lots of cheaper ways to get meat. I know that compared to other countries Ontario is less expensive and less of a regulation nightmare. In Scotland you a need different permit for each river and a different stamp for each type of fish. One river could be a hundred yards from another river but the permits are not transferable and you also a different one for salt or fresh water! 16 cents a day to hunt and fish in Ontario.

How do we compare tax wise.
It's all just a money grab.

They get paid less, and things cost more. A Bus driver in Scotland gets about 8 pound an hour, a pint of lager in a pub cost 4 pound, the same as a big mac.

The problem really isn't the amount being paid, its what is done with the money (how it's managed is the problem) once they get it. Only if the government manages my money like it was coming out of their own pockets would I stop complaining.

I don't know that its all that cheaper FMC to buy. Ignoring any differences in the quality of meat ( checked what goes into your store bought hamburger??)

I have about 16 pounds of combined Duck and Goose in the freezer. Am pretty sure 15 pounds of chicken will cost a lot more than the cost of a waterfall stamp, a box of shells and some gas for the motor. Roughly $50-$60, so it works out to about $4.00/pound. Im certain chicken breast and legs cost more, especially if you buy free range/organic....

An average sized Ontario Bear is around 200pds and that will net about 50pds.
Know my friends buck was 140pds dressed, and he got 100 pounds of combined ground/chops/steak/roast.
It cost him one slug and his tag.

So lets say you have a good year and can put
2 Turkey in the freezer, 50 pounds Bear, 100 pounds venison in the freezer.
For the cost of tags and some basic associated cost.

Roughly 200 pounds of meat, for very little cost.
Even at an average cost of $10/pd (likely low) at the grocery store your looking at $2,000
Couple years ago I did a bulk buy of meat. It cost me close to $3,000 for combined beef/chicken/fish. Was enough to feed 3 for a year. Know for a fact 200 pounds we likely wouldn't eat in a year.

As stated, yes there are upfront cost in gear, but if taken care of you get years and years out of it.

I just renewed over the phone and it was $180.30 for new card, 3 year Sport fish/Small game.
