Nice, but a little too early up here, maybe another 2 weeks.
Ah man are you kidding me............I would love to find a good patch of them, most I have ever found was a couple per year, not much of a feed........lol. Congrats!!!! Must be nice to have a feed of them like that. Need to find me a morel honey hole!!
Where I hunt, there were no morels or fiddle-heads on the opening day last week.
I hope that these rains have brought a few to life and I plan on going back SOON to look for them!
Found a few in my yard today well cutting grass
checked my fiddlehead patches last week and at least another week away. now to find a place with some morels...
From what I read some ferns are toxic and fiddleheads are only good from what is called the ostrich fern - is it possible to gather fiddleheads from the wrong fern and get sick - how do you know what you are eating is from the right fern - thanks
I've been checking my morel spot but nothing yet. Lots of fiddleheads though, and they are just right.
S.
I went up the road for fiddleheads yesterday and was almost too late. Got a couple of pounds but most were 6-12 inches tall. Once they start it doesn't take long at all. JoePa the Ostrich fern is the big one like 3-4 feet tall that grows out of a dark bark like clump that sticks up out of the ground a few inches. There's not really any other ferns like it. Even those need to be boiled first to get the toxins out or expect a sore gut. I boil mine for two minutes, drain off the dark water, rinse and then boil again for 1 minute. This time the water will be much lighter colored. Then they get sauteed with butter and wild garlic for around five minutes. So good with a light dollop of sour cream.
Cheers
What Smitty said, plus and ostrich fern has multiple shoots from same clump that have no further offshoots up the stem. The other's have a single stem that branches off into 2-3 offshoots.
We've been having quite the Morel season so far this year, especially after those heavy rains. Been finding some Pheasantbacks as well.

Nice haul Sprite. I am just new to this morel hunting. The Wife and I have been doing a lot of walking but I don't even know if we have any in the North Bay area this far North.
You certainly do as I've found them in Nipissing (the town) area
Wow what a great haul Sprite!!! I wish I could find a spot to get a decent feed of them. Found 4 on my lawn yesterday but that is the most I have ever found. Any tips on best places to find them in Ontario?? How is the pheasantback for eating??? I have a bunch of them behind my house on old stumps, never tried it though, sounds like it might be worth trying!
This week we have seen a ton if morals pop up. Should be good picking fur the next week
Holy cow, what a haul...
Watch the pheasant backs. I dried a bunch of them to use as Turkey mount faces.and thy were full of littel holes after a week. Littel worms had burrowed there way out of them
are there any other mushrooms that look similar or are you pretty safe going by pictures. Thanks.
Morels are a pretty safe bet. I'm still alive.
I was visiting a couple at their place last week and she made a dive for the ground exclaiming MORELS,! Came up with a handful of what I know as false morels. I've never tried them but it sounds like they eat them all the time. Has any one else eaten them?
Should have questioned her at the time but they are still around this week so I assume they survived....
you should speak up about it unless you dont like them lol. as mentioned above there is a fairly easy way to tell by cutting them open.

Awesome. Thank you for that link.
Fried in butter served with steak and potatoes they were fantastic! Makes me upset at not paying attention and running over a bunch with the lawnmower last weekend.
Morels look like gopher brains to me. Still, they are tasty.
