Janetville area turkey hunting ... help please

hey folks,

new to the turkey game... always outdoors but just picked up turkey hunting about 3 years ago .... originally from northern Ontario i'm living in the Janetville area and am learning quick that it helps to know farmers or people with private property for hunting... i've knocked on a couple doors but the land is already hunted out... so i've basically stuck to un assumed roads and un posted property which I think is crown....

any advice to areas around Janetville that are larger bush areas where I can set up? Or know a farmer? lol I've looked online to try to find crown land maps but my technical abilities I guess are limited because i'm not finding what i'm looking for ....

any help is better than no help, appreciate your time

Well the best way to go about it would be to get to a area you believe turkey should be just before day light. Sit and listen for gobbling them move in to were you hear him set up and start calling softly .

been there done that a couple times... unfortunately I can get as far as the private property sign or the fenced off area to where the hardwoods are lol

I would strongly suggest you know 100% that the land you are hunting on is crown and not private, just because it is not posted doesn't mean you can hunt it if it's private!!! That statement "I think" is going to have most guys on this forum shaking their heads and is a massive issue of what is wrong with today's turkey hunter (and an issue in all aspects of hunting for that matter).

You are looking for an easy way out and your not going to get it here, we have all done the work to get our turkey spots and no one is just going to just hand that over to you. You might get some guidance on crown land spots to go but good luck having someone hand you a private spot they have done the leg work on. Put some gas in your vehicle find the birds and keep on knocking on doors.

ive read some of your posts on here.... you seem like a pretty miserable guy.... trust me my friend i've spent a lot of time outside and really just wondering how to access crown land information.... the internet and I don't see eye to eye at times lol thanks so much for your time and quality information though! :)

Duckslayer is right, no excuses for not knowing the ownership of the land. Long before the internet, guys did their homework in the township office, studied the maps and asked them "who owned what" then contacted that person. If you don't know, stay off the land.

relax pal, I know ive hunted only crown but very small portions of it... I used think in my first statement now that I look back... apparently it got a couple backs up... southern Ontario is definitely a different beast!!! lol don't take everything so literal and to heart... the technicians motto....

There is something I believe is called the Ontario Crown Land Atlas which is likely online (also technologically challenged). You may want to have alook at that. Failing that, get out and scout and knock on doors which most guys do well before the season starts. Hope this helps. B525

a guy at work just told me the exact same thing actually... appreciate the help... probably just me but knocking on farmers doors just seems intrusive for some reason but I guess that's the only way you're gonna get land when crown is at a minimum.... like I said its a different world down here and I just need to adapt!

Actually according the trespass act in a rural area if it's not posted or fenced your are free to hunt it. Onus is on the landowner to properly post it. You my not like it but that's the law.

Just because it's not posted doesn't mean you can trespass to hunt. There's many exclusions that hunters need to be aware of that can really land a hunter into plenty of hot water. The long and short of it is that if it's not your property or you don't have permission to be there, keep the hell out.

Your sort of right right, with some land that is true, up till the landowner catches you then tells you to get off the property...this is largely for property up north not really applicable for land in Southern Ont where the OP is asking about...most land (private or crown) here is clearly marked with fences etc.

It's also not applicable for 'hunting' where the regs require you have permission to hunt first..., as trimmer said, lots of exclusions in that law, so best just do your homework and find out who owns the land you want to hunt and get permission.

I'm familiar with the area and farmers around there. There are a lot of hunters as well. The largest area of land to hunt is the ganaraska forest with is 20 mins east of you. And they give you a map of tracts of forest.

There's no crown land around Janesville as far as I was aware. That's a pretty heavily farmed area.

Even if you are hunting "road allowances", you could very well be screwing someone over. I have a friend who hunts around janetville, and he has never ending problems with tresspassers. Its dangerous. Stay the hell out if you don't own it, or have written permission from the land owner.

The Ganaraska Forest (west and east areas,only) is one giant motor cross track that's almost devoid of game of any sort,not the most ideal for hunting,but,excellent for ATV riding and snowmobiling in the winter (when there's snow). Because it's a multi-use area,greater care must be taken by hunters because of the number of people that are in there at any given time,weekends naturally being the busiest. A year-round membership is the best "bang-for-the-buck" which range in price per person depending on the activities chosen,but,at the very least,a day pass is required. search peterborough GIS, and open their mapping software. Maximize the castradal option on the left, click the crown land unpatented layer. You will see all the crown land in the county.

Most counties have this software, great tool for figuring out where you can go freely.

In theory you're not trespassing if it's not posted.... so why would you keep the hell out?

Unassumed roads are perfectly legal to hunt and I'm pretty sure no one try's to interrupt hunts on purpose but land owners are interrupting my hunt as much as I am theirs.... at the end of the day it's all about getting outdoors and enjoying yourself and as long as they aren't coming over all hot and ignorant I'm pretty sure resolutions can be reached

Appreciate the other info though just be nice to be closer to home sometimes when you work 12.5 hour shifts... definitely give ganaraska a whirl

There are very few places in ontario that require you to have explicit permission. Generally if it's not posted then the owner is granting implied permission. If you disagree posted the law that says otherwise.

I've always gone by the bolded statement in the regs..otherwise your a trespasser.

edit add: that is why your not allowed to recover your deer from a neighbouring property if you do not have permission...it's not implied.

100% true. Obviously you would hope people would use common courtesy and sense when choosing their hunting spots but on the other hand I wouldn't stop myself from exploring or setting up on unposted land without a residence because of a couple silly opinions on this thread

Absolutely. Laws are written for everyone including landowners so I don't feel one bit bad going onto unposted land.

You guys are stretching your interpretation a bit there. No signs = the landowner will have a hard time pressing charges. No issues? Good luck with that. There are lots of things you can legally get away with but otherwise shouldn't do. Try walking down the street in downtown Toronto with an unloaded rifle you just purchased from the local shop slung over your shoulder. While legal it's hardly advisable.

For what it's worth I understand why it's quite an adjustment for you. I've hunted in Northern Ontario quite a bit and the general rule is unless it's posted, hunt away. The opposite is true down this way. You pretty well have to assume everything is private unless you can find out otherwise. Many landowners don't bother posting their property but it doesn't mean you'll have "no issues". Carrying on like you have a right to be on someone's property because it isn't posted won't do any of us any good.

Wow..no wonder we have such a problem with how hunters are perceived by the landowners. A few bad apples spoil it for the rest.

I've never heard any bad reps... maybe you surround yourself with negative people?? Not sure....

Another suggestion I've heard is go to the land registry office and find landowners who don't even live in the province or country and you're unlikely to run into any problem being on their land. A bit time consuming but gives you some assurance that you won't be annoying a landowner hunting their unposted property.

So you post a thread asking for help, you receive advice from people who have lived in Central and Southern Ontario for their entire lives that hunting on private property is a bad idea, posted or not. You then indignantly claim that you would be within your rights to do it regardless of the advice you receive. Then you proceed to talk about how "worked up" everyone on this site is.

If you want to see worked up, go shoot a turkey on someone's un-posted private property.

Well if the only advice you were looking for is how better to squeeze around a trespassing charge then I suppose you got some help.

If you don't think that advice from those who live in the area is good, you're in for a pile of headaches. Attitudes towards hunting down here are night and day compared to what you're used to up North.

If you're looking for quality time in the field then listen to the majority of the advice here. Otherwise you'll spend your time sneaking around and being chased off private property. There is no easy way here in the Southern part of the province unfortunately. Most of us who don't own land big enough to hunt on have spent years building relationships and acquiring permission.

There was a lot of good advice given above... and a lot of negativity. I'll definitely try my luck on the non posted areas... I'll assume that not all land owners are like the ones you're describing and assume it's not like Beverly hillbillies and I'm not gettting chased off by Jed and the boys with shotguns. If I had land I wasn't using I'd be like dmichel and leave it to anyone as long as it wasn't being disrespected with trash left behind. As much as people think I should adapt to "the way it is" in southern Ontario... I like to explore my options and figure it out

You need to pay ATTENTION to the GOOD advice you got here.
As a Hunter Ed instructor in the Niagara peninsula I teach all the students that ALL land in Niagara is private land EXCEPT for the Wildlife Management Areas listed on map 1 in the Hunting Regs.
For ANY other land, its private ---> get permission!
Just because some land is uncultivated does NOT give anyone the right to trespass. If you try to hedge around this concept, you're just another bad egg that gives all hunters a bad public image,
and we don't need that!!!

I don't really see your point on being a bad egg from hunting on un posted land.... I see it as someone enjoying the outdoors respecting the land ... obviously ask for permission if the opportunity is there but if not I'll hunt it no problem... not to be a menace but to be outside and enjoying it... you really have a negative view on people that are not as lucky as some to have contacts or own land. I understand some have "worked hard" by driving around and knocking on doors.... I'm just not that guy unfortunately

Most accidents require two ill advised actions to happen at the same time. Trespassing would be one of those actions. I was shot at by a individual a few years back that thought exactly like you do, saw the birds from the road, no signs, good to go. I had been working that large flock of bird for 5 hours, that's right 5 hours and at the moment of truth when i was set to pull the trigger, buddy shoots at the birds right in front of me. He missed me but he definitely thought he had shot me. I would of bet the house that there was no one in that field when i got ready to shoot. Hunters can and will make questionable shots sometimes, like shooting at a bird on a knoll, stalking and shooting, etc. lots of people do it. Add a trespasser and it's only a matter of time before an accident happens like the one i was involved in. Food for thought.

Fortunately the same laws apply whether you are a "northerner" or not. With such a strong opinion from the southerners who think they are the majority, I'm surprised the elected representatives haven't update the laws to reflect these opinions..... oh wait, maybe it's just an opinion of a minority on here and doesn't really reflect the public thoughts on what a good responsible landowner would do (ie post the land if you don't want people on it)

You're failing to acknowledge that "legal" does not necessarily mean "acceptable". Even if it is legal to hunt unless otherwise posted, it doesn't make it right. The concept of hunting someone's land just because it isn't posted is morally wrong and irresponsible. I can use these words because the OP knows 100% that the land is private (MNRF crown land atlas confirms all of the land around The town in question is privately owned) yet he's playing stupid and hunting because "it's not posted".

Legal or not, if the land owner comes running out to boot his behind off the property you can forget the owner ever granting a hunter permission in the future. I'm sure the "but sir, your land isn't posted" arguement won't fly. Let alone the safety issues already outlined... its just stupid. We already know his mind is made up and what his intentions are. I just hope he doesn't mentor any young hunters in the future.

I'd be very careful about trying to hunt on "unassumed" roads down here. Due to population density, most are considered roadways under the FWCA and you'll be charged by a CO if they find you on it, or shooting across it with a loaded firearm. If it's a open road allowance that means you only have a 66 foot band, then you're trespassing on someone's private property. The local COs here use the ATV as a rule. If an ATV uses the unassumed road as a trail, then it's not legal to have a loaded gun on it.

The BEST thing you could do is start knocking on doors and building relationships with local farmers. Once you get a bad rep for being a trespasser, you can forget about getting permission anywhere. Word travels fast in this area. Most farmers know each other, and spread the word quick. Prove to a few that you aren't that guy that will just walk in anywhere they feel like and wreck hunts for people with permission, and piss off landowners, and you might get somewhere. Worst that can happen is you get a NO.....and I have gone back on properties that gave me a NO, and got a yes after keeping the relationship up.

As a new Hunter myself i find this thread incredibly hard to read.. you state that you aren't that kind of guy to go around knocking on doors or putting hard work in to gain access to land, I began hunting in November of 2016 and within the first two weeks i had property to hunt on by asking some farmers just north of the city i live in.. none of them wanted me to help out with the farm but rather to respect the land, not leave any trash and only bring people approved by the land owner to hunt. I don't quite understand whats so difficult about putting in some time like everybody else has done to gain the ability to hunt legally and respectfully on somebody's property. Hopefully the bad karma you're creating for yourself doesn't effect any innocent by standers around you.

This thread made me look up where Janetville Ont is. I'm happy to report its several hundred KM's from where I hunt so I won't have to worry about this... lol

I guess I better go to the local hardware store and buy some no trespassing signs for my farm, I never really thought this problem existed until now. I've never seen anyone trespass on my place except for the time when my neighbour's donkey made its way back there. Hopefully the signs will prevent any other jackasses trying to make their way on my private property.

Well what do you think the future of hunting in the Southern half of the province would look like if everyone followed the philosophy of you and the OP?

It's not the attitude of the Southern hunters that's the problem, it's the attitude of the non-hunting masses and the fact that we have an exponentially higher hunter/land ratio compared to the North. It's a recipe for disaster for the sport in general if everyone just decided to hunt wherever they felt like it because they "didn't see any signs posted".

Do you two geniuses think you're the first people to think of this little loophole? Most of us realize that we probably wouldn't be charged for trespassing, we just have enough respect to stay off of land that we don't have permission to use.

You're expecting something for nothing, a free ride. It's pure laziness and entitlement. The plague of up and coming generations. Maybe when you're all grown up and have to pay for stuff on your own you'll understand.

So when you see a trail cam on a tree Do you believe that it's lost and you take it home with you

Haha, I'm 72 years old. It's the greed and gimme gimme mine mine attitude of the baby boomers that seems to have got us here. We are talking about forests, not cars. As a kid a forest was there for everyone to enjoy. And the law is written to reflect that.

Then you should know that the 'Trespass' issue being discussed here isn't about recreationally enjoying the forests, walking trails etc etc...which is the way (and why ) the law is written the way it is.

The OP is talking about Hunting on private land using the same law to protect him from being charged rather that doing what's right and taking the time to find out who owns it and asking permission first. As the hunting regs say, a hunting license does not give you permission to be on private land.

this thread and attitudes within it make me sick. I talk to a lot of farmers, and they have a constant battle with peope thinking they are entitled to their land with signs and without.

Please realize what you are doing is bad for our sport and also is illegal in most cases. the law isn't as simple as you make it out to be. I just looked this up to confirm, and there are more clauses that will point out what you are doing is illegal, but i am at work and don't have time to scour the act right now.
Its sad that you dont see how your attitude sets back all the hard work of guys before us, and of lots of devoted hunters on this forum. Guys who care about this sport have worked for years to repair landowner trust, from back in the wild west days (thats how some landowners have described the past to me), and with hunters who still think they can do whatever they want.

this is likely the type of bushes that you have found and are hunting (i don't know the area that well). Also, if that forest is under cultivation at any time (which most forests in southern ontario are in some respects) than you are trespassing.
please rethink your attitudes, as this is whats best for the sport, and your own pocket book.

Also,
you can get information about southern crown forests from your local MNR district office, also there are lots of conservation authorities, municipalities and counties whom allow hunting on their forests, reach out to them (unless you consider that too much trouble). crown land in my area is not on the Crown Land Use Atlas, but the local office can send out maps.

i find it quite hilarious that you think knocking on doors could be "intrusive" but going on land without permission, and finding ways around getting permission is totally acceptable to you. i fi i was a landowner, i would appreciate guys asking permission, but consider guys trespassing as intrusive.

Actually the history of the trespass act has roots in our hunting heritage and the implied consent of an unposted forest. Walking and hunting are either both trespassing or neither trespassing.

In fact..the acts were introduced in 1980 so that farmers, fearing liability would post their land 'No Trespassing'. The act protects them and encourages them to NOT post their land completely and use specific Posting for specific Activities they don't want on their land....ie: No hunting as opposed to 'No Trespassing'..so others can use it for recreational purposes.

Which lends itself to more northerly locations as there are larger tracks of 'wild' land as opposed to southern properties that are more likely used.

Maybe you were the dirtbag who walked into our set up and fired a shot right in our direction?? I have been screwed over a couple times in that area now. Seems to be a lot like you around there. If you took the time to knock on the door, you would know there are other people hunting there. What if I shot you, because you weren't supposed to be there??

I fear for the hikers who wander onto some private land, or even worse for the other hunters who nay be got permission too. Permission doesn't guarantee exclusive rights. I've always made sure to identify my target but guess the southerners are a little more liberal with the trigger. Scary times indeed when so many have a hard time understanding what the law says and are so close minded in their opinions.

If he had talked to the landowner, he would know there were others hunting the property. That's the whole point!!!!

One of the first things I need to know when I get permission is if there is anyone else hunting the property, and if I can have their contact info.

I have NEVER found a piece of property in southern ontario that didn't have some sort of fence on it either, so the guy is either just trolling to be an idiot, or he is a trespassing poacher who could easily kill or injure someone in the turkey woods.

Until you are the guy who has shot flying in your direction, you wont get it. I have sole permission on this property, and when shot comes flying in your direction from 70yds away from someone who isn't supposed to be there you get a little ticked off.

Should always scout your area and give yourself no blind spots to avoid this.... common sense is a helpful tool in those situations in my opinion
