Looking for a .22 for small game, any recommendations? I have thought about some of the air compression options but they are quite pricey in comparison to the traditional models. I want to get out chasing squirrels while also working on my shot. I'm open to purchasing a used one as well if anyone is selling.

Bolt actions are good for making you think about each shot, because you can't just keep pulling the trigger.
Savage has a great selection of bolt actions.
i picked up the savage 64. for a cheap little plinkster it does the job and doesn't break the bank. i dont use it near enough but it is alot of fun when i take it out. does the job for me whenever i want to shoot tree rats, gopher or the odd pest around the house...
I am in Toronto......I was debating some of the options out there. air rifle being one of them. But I think I prefer the traditional rimfire, especially in terms of price. Sounds like the Savage might be the way to goQuote:

Just a option( ya there all options), there are many 22's out there with plastic/synthetic stocks, and many with wood. I personally like wood or laminated wood because of the weight. Karen has a 10/22 with a synthetic stock and it is a fine shooter and light, but without some weight I find it is harder to hold steady when shooting off hand. Both my Savage and the 10/22 use the same scope and out to about 50 to 70 yards they both do a good job, but beyond that the bolt with it's weight and tighter chamber gets much better groups. I think the action of the 10/22 being a blow back action robs the bullets of power and the loss only shows up past about 50 to 70 yards.
I wouldn't worry about velocity loss in a semi auto vs bolt action, as there is enough variance in velocity between rounds of ammo in a box/carton /lot of ammo itself.
The other thing I suspect is the chamber, and the heavy trigger pull. I was thinking of upgrading her rifle with a new trigger and barrel( tighter chamber).Quote:

Semi auto .22's are a real pain in the butt to clean.To do a proper job they must be completely stripped.
Then rechecked for point of aim.
When cleaning any rifle barrel the easiest way to screw up its accuracy is cleaning the barrel from the muzzle.
The reasons are many,I won't get into them here,anyone interested can simply Google the subject.

Then buy yourself different ammo to try...2's are not as finicky or sensitive as other calibers to different ammo but ea rifle will still have its preferences.
I like lever .22s for hunting. My Browning is accurate enough for any small game hunting and is a pleasure to carry. The mag tube under the barrel holds at least 10 rounds, never have to fumble with magazines. I have at least 15 .22s in every action and the little lever always comes with me for hunting. I use my CZ 452 if I want to punch paper.

It does not matter what you use for a sighting system if you do not have proper breathing, rifle/shotgun mounting and a proper fitting rifle/shotgun.Quote:

You are limited to hares ,rabbits and squirrels.Even squirrels I think being in S Ont u may be safer with a small gauge shotgun.
If u are planning on adding winged game to your quarry list u may want to rethink your firearm selection
Hey thanks for all the feedback, I’m just looking to add to my arsenal and improve my shooting, I ended up getting the ruger 10/22 but haven’t attempted any hunting with it yet, typically for grouse and the like I’m using my shotgun.
It’s more so an option for rabbits and squirrels and just good shooting mechanics.

Congrats on your purchase. It is quite addictive to play with .22 rifles and you now have the most modifiable gun on the planet.
