Cannabis and the Hunt Camp

Not trying to stir any pots, pun somewhat intended.

I am curious though as to the opinions of the guys here, how will your hunt camp change if at all with it's bylaws with regards to the legalization of cannabis.

To me I would think that it would align somewhat with alcohol but more strict. When we go to camp we allow 1 drink at lunch but no more if you plan to hunt that afternoon. This may seem harsh to some that are heavier drinkers but it works similarly to the policy of use to drive a car, a blanket statement for safety.

I do not believe though that we will allow any cannabis during the day if the person wants to hunt the afternoon, at least not at the start. From those who I have been around who have smoked, I can see both those who would not be impaired at all by a few puffs but I also have been around those who would be very scary with a firearm after that same amount of smoke.

What are your thoughts?

It may be somewhat different now with the various forms available.
No expert; but wonder if the brownies, gummies or vape concoctions are more or less potent?

Problem I see is while it is an intoxicate similar to alcohol, non-users may not want to smell the smoke or get a contact high, provided the cannabis is smoked, from users (much like tobacco). Perhaps a use similar policy similar to alcohol (good to go after the guns are put away for the night or you don't go out if you consumed at lunch) combined with a location policy for tobacco (must smoke a certain distance from camp buildings) would work.

The various forms and strains do various things and for various times, this is probably the biggest issue with impairment.

Most guys I know..it's not even a consideration. Anyone noticed most people who smoke don't really hang out with those who don't? Guys who drink regularly don't usually wind up in camps where it's one beer after dinner?

My main concern is the level of impairment, and what lasting effects are present? As of tomorrow I suppose one can read a label and know exactly how much THC they're consuming...ergo how off the beam they're going to be...but not unlike law enforcement....it's a real variable for all concerned.

I do not believe that many are going to take up smoking pot just because it is legal, but if they do in our camp go for it but after the hunt is over just like the booze.

It will be/has been treated the same as alcohol at our camp. Absolute zero during the days hunt, but once the rifles are put away people are free to do as they wish.

Nothing is going to change. Lots of people are preparing for the weedpocolype as if everyone is going to turn into raging potheads at midnight tonight. My policy is no pot during legal hunting hours until all firearms are cased for the day. After that I don't care provided people are safe ie not driving etc.

On our hunts One shot in the morning and one afternoon ( we ate twice a day ) in the evening more shots...
But we never had to remind anybody , everybody is very responsible person .
For " Pots " I never used it , and never will , I had a situation with 2 new hunters visiting for a day - night and smoked it ...
They newer will be again at the hunt , at the camp .....

The biggest problem at the camp is that some hunters enjoying trying to control .... the others ...
that is calling " controlling narcissistic abuse " and when the abused can't take it anymore ...
Then blow up , and fight back .... then they accusing him that he has a problem ...
Also at the camp they don't like confident self-confident person ....
Who can and did hunt by himself .... before ....
Yes he is a trail blazer ....
maybe thats is the other peoples problem ....

Easy decision for me
I don't want to be around it so I wont be going next year.

Never had anyone hurt with a firearm at the camp I attend, but over the years , we have had a few hurt on their atv's after 'diner'.

Our camp members are all non-smokers,so,this won't be an issue.

Don't think for a second that non smokers don't also use cannibis.

I don't see how it will change a thing.
Responsible people dont pick up a firearm impaired by any substance. If they choose to consume(not just talking about cannabis) in my camp they stay back and do dishes.

Exactly, either the gun cabinet is unlocked OR the liquor cabinet is unlocked. I have walked out on hunts where guys had to have "just one beer" because too many times it became a half dozen. If you can't make it to dinner time without drinking I hope you are in a different part of the woods from where I am.

I agree there, although some would shy away because it was against the law and it could have hurt other parts of their lives or professions.

You always have the rule breakers too, we had a guy who would bring a flask into the bush, he was asked to stop and did it again, was kicked out of the camp while we hunted there.

As a former, and "very experienced" pot-smoker, I take the same stance as I would with alcohol. Don't do it while you are operating a firearm or vehicle. The two substances have completely different types of impairments (alcohol being much more severe) and any given persons experiences while under the influence of either can vary wildly. I know some people that are completely functional while smoking all day long, I know other that take one puff and are on the couch down for the count. Same with alcohol. It's good to have these discussions because the less the usage is stigmatized the better it will be for people to understand the effects marijuana have on people. And let me tell you, i'd rather be "high" than drunk, but that's just me. People need to use common sense when under the influence, so don't operate a firearm or drive a vehicle. As for the "contact high" some people are talking about, never once have I been around a person smoking and ending up feeling a contact high. And that includes before I ever touched the stuff, and after I stopped. The smoke being exhaled has little to know THC and will not get you high

I tried some pot in a duck blind one time and it ruined my hunt. I got all mellow and didn't want to shoot anything.

No doubt they may use it in another form,but,smoking it for a non-smoker won't be a pleasant experience. Picture them turning green,choking and coughing up a lung or two. Not a nice picture,at all.

If i want to go and sit in my stand and enjoy some freedom in a responsible manner, nobody is going to tell me I cannot. I have been in enough groups to realize an over controlling camp boss is not my idea of enjoying the outdoors. One year a camp boss got punched out, and rightfully so as grown up adults were sick and tired of his bs rules and being told what to do constantly. Now I hunt on my own or with close friends or family, we dont need to be told how to live for a week.

Maybe you should view this from the camp bosses perspective and there is a Need to control things,otherwise the camp goes for a chit.Some examples,guys coming into camp late,guys not getting up,guys not staying on watch,..blah,blah. Try running a camp for a few weeks and see how she goes.Why have you been to so many camps,did they all not suit you.Its my experience that some hunters feel they are doing a big favour just showing up to a camp to hunt and have zero appreciation of the work into a camp.

I know many people who smoke weed that does not smoke tobacco. Even met a guy who would not smoke a joint because there was traces of tobacco it . To each there own I guess.

Gilroy so what if someone is late or doesn't want to get up early every day. Most people take vacation time away from work to enjoy some time away. The last thing I need is someone telling me what and how I should live for the week. We are all grown adults if I want to sleep in or stay out and miss a meal than damn well I will. It's not about losing control of a camp. The irresponsible people just don't come back next year that's it. Sorry if you like to be a boss, my camp doesn't have a boss. My camp is run with mutual respect for each other and no one is to be bossed around for the week. The biggest problems with many camps is not with booze or weed, but with an idiot boss who people tend to hate by the end of the week. Many of those camps have a revolving door of members because the boss is an over controlling *sshole.

Best part about hunt camp is there are no rules at hunt camp. As long as your not putting someone in danger do as you please.

I have my own camp Gilroy, I choose my members wisely. We are all grown adults and don't need to be bossed around all week. There's two rules Gilroy, idiots and bosses are not welcome, and I gotta say it's been working out great.
As far as vacation hunters, that's some funny stuff right there..lol

Hard to know what to believe with these posts,first post you state you don,t hunt in group hunts,you don,t do this because you don,t like camp bosses.Then you state you hunt on your own OR with close friends or family.

I understand your point. My cousin and a good friend bought 500 acres in the Burks Falls area for a bunch of coin so they have the right to rule the roost. The way I look at it if I don't like there rules then I should buy my own property

It really depends on how reasonable their rules are. With some folks the power goes to their heads and they end up being overbearing aholes while others are there to have a good time with their buddies and most rules revolve around safety and equitable sharing of chores.

In the past I've hunted at different places and groups anywhere from 5-6 to 16-18 guys, and out of each group I would know a couple. The rest where people I've never met until that week of hunting. Since having my own camp I now only hunt with people I know well and consider friends. Seems like the same people come back to my camp every year because there is no idiot boss.

The solution is either split ownership (which ends up messy in the long run) or hunt with permission on property that nobody in the camp owns. That way there's no "boss" and everyone has equal stake and equal expectations.

Either that or travel far enough to larger tracts of crown land and do the same.

My old camp broke up and sold because of BS with the "boss". If you were to ask him, we were trying to "run his camp", even though we had an equal share.

We're now a group of 5 or 6 like-minded people, close family and friends, and it's a far more relaxed hunt and for the most part more successful.

Although I guess this is the cannabis thread so I should stay on topic. We don't make rules for what people can or can't do on their week away from home. As long as safety and common sense come first, that's all that matters. Enjoy what you like back at camp when the day is done.

That being said, one tradition in our little group has always been to carry a little airplane bottle of whisky in our pack so you can have a toast to your deer if you're lucky enough to get one.

I've worked with guys that smoke and they are dangerous enough. So my opinion is NOT AROUND FIREARMS....but that's just me.

After reading these posts in this thread,there'll be a 60oz of Crown Royal and 10 2" thick T-Bones going on the camp table on party night in gratitude for 20 years of friendship and fellowship with the best hunting crew in Canada. Our lucky stars really aligned for this one.

We took the initiative to address this right after last year's hunt, given the impending legalization. Things learned about cannabis (by actually speaking with people who use it:
-There is no such thing as a 1-drink equivalent; and
-Its effect on different people can vary widely.

Our decision: Cannabis users are welcome to it in the evening after the guns are put away. If smoked it must be done so outside. Zero tolerance for use during the day.

For the hunt camps I have been to, the use of any controlled substance (for which cannabis is now a part of), for anyone responsible came either after the morning hunt, and used in moderation during the day, but as to not be impaired, and if there was anyone using more booze or weed, they would exclude themselves from the evening hunt. For some they consumed after the evening hunt, and stayed up as to not partake in the morning hunt.

If cannabis was present in the hunt camp before it was legal. It is still going to be present now. I don't think it will make a difference on who consumes it. Just like alcohol.

We hunt crown land, and for some that come up it is not just about the hunting, it is about coming up and spending a relaxing time with friends. Even though we are up there for a week, there have been some that have only hunted 1 or 2 days. As long as all the others are satisfied with our harvest, it never has been an issue.

There has never been anyone who is not responsible up at camp. We have invited new people up here and there, but they have been responsible as well. I think the group would definitely speak up if someone invited a guy/gal that was not responsible. They obviously would not be allowed back, and we would give the invitee a earful.

Given the fact that a lot of us enjoy a mid-morning snooze out in the blind....not sure it's going to make much difference...... ;)

The title of this thread is cannabis in the hunt camp.
Cannabis includes CBD's. Many don't know the difference.
And yes the current new legislation includes CBD's.
Now CBD's will be available to many without a prescription.

Ok, I give up! I've heard of SBD's and have let a few loose in the hunt camp. Believe me, they smelled way worse than skunk? But what the hell is CBD? I just cant keep up with all this pot crap.

CBD's are a chemical from cannabis. Unlike THC the CBD does not have any psychoactive properties. In other words you don't get high. It is an anti-inflammatory. Reduces pain by reducing inflammation. Some products are straight CBD and other are part CBD & THC. CBD has medical properties without the high if straight CBD. Also has other medical properties such as reducing seizures.

I did a quick glance at the Ontario pot store, mainly to see if it had been crashed yet.

There a number of THC/CBD blends, which is what the normal Cannabis would be, but strains that flip almost all to THC and almost all to CBD as well, very interesting, explains a bit more of what the medical users I know have talked about.

GW to drugs when its classified as illegal drug and kids have to buy it from a dealer, who also deals Grade A drugs ... after offering the kid everytime, he/she might try it once ... its like me trying coke cherry flavour, even though I dont like cherry ... its from a trusted brand, coke ..

if u buy it legally from a store, its no different than alcohol. u might get higher or lower potency, but u wont be exposed to other drugs.

Great anecdote, but your personal experience doesn't settle the matter. The idea you are presenting is a holdover from the "war on drugs" era which......did not end well. Basically started by Nixon in order to make breaking up opposing political parties easier. If you want to educate yourself there are plenty of resources. If you don't, we'll no skin off my back I love good bit of comedy even if it is unintentional.

Also how many "true leaders of men" have you actually met? What is the criteria for an"true leader of men" beside not imbibing in the devil's lettuce?

Clearly the same safety rules that apply to alcohol in the camp must apply to cannabis. Both are off limits until the day is done or to anyone driving home. Pretty straight forward

The war on drugs is still going on strong, as are the crack heads who break into houses. If you want any evidence as to how drugs decimate the human sole watch 'Streets of Philladeplhia - Kensington' on utube.

A true leader is the one men follow without being told to. I have worn both blue and green unforms in my life, and have met a few good leaders in my time.

Corellation does not equal causation. The war on drugs is over or at least in its death throws. It's public support is at an all time low and the results have been lacking. Meanwhile in countries that have stopped trading drug abuse as a criminal problem and started treating it as a health care problem have made great strides in reducing consumption within their population.

I wore green once upon a time and got to work with a real life legitimate war hero. Medal on his chest for pulling his crew from their veichle after an IED all while shrapnel was burning a hole in his back. I've seen the scars, he showed me while we smoked a doobie. Realistically though my anecdote and your anecdote are meaningless. The numbers don't lie and they do not agree with the idea you are presenting.

Cannabis is treated like alcohol when we're hunting or shooting. Corks are pulled and bongs are lit only after the guns are put away for the day.

I have no quarrel with the users of either and don't hold anyone in lower regard based on how they get a little buzz on.

I find these threads interesting.

We are all outdoorsmen, and women. But there are some very definite personality types.

1. There are those who treat their time at camp, as valuable. Their time is not to be wasted, or spent wasted for that matter. Vacation and time off is precious, and if the end goal is to have some camaraderie, and fill a tag...then that's the goal. Which means, yes...having a fair amount of self discipline, getting lots of rest, early mornings, and lots of time in the field. Occasional drinks or what have you is allowed, but only sparingly.

2. There are also those who treat their time at camp as a vacation away from their spouse, or whatever else they're dealing with at home. They show up with cases of beer, bags of weed, and generally treat it as a time where they don't have to care about anything, or anyone. They're usually also the types who remain in bad marriages, and lack the wherewithal to effectively deal with life on the day to day in general.
( We all know them).

I fall into the former, because I've had my fill of the latter. A glass of red with dinner, ( or a quick toke if that's what you want) is about all I really want. The experience alone still does it for me.

Well I don't weed at least not in the last 40 years. I have no issues with someone smoking it but prefer if I'm not in the same room, same with cigarettes' . At camp drink/pot should be treated the same only after guns are put away. If someone gets into either one so much as they can't legally drive then that is too much. It not just the night before that one has to be concerned with, it is the next morning, having someone behind you or around you that is loaded from the night before. If you need to partake to this level maybe you should fined I nice B and B to spend you week at and just site there and get stoned and not have any worries, or endanger someone else that is trying to have a good hunt and a few beers/joints with friends after the hunt.

I can't get over how prevalent it's public use has become. I went to a safety course yesterday with 3 other companies and at morning break outside all you could smell is pot. Zip over to Tim Hortons for lunch and the car ahead of me has a cloud rolling out. Back to the safety meeting and I go out to my truck at afternoon break to make some calls and a crew outside puffing away. Get home and take the dog for a walk through the park and a young couple sitting on the park bench puffing away. To each his own but really getting sick of the smell of pot almost everywhere I go in public nowadays. Since legalization it's become a free for all, at least from what I'm seeing. Rant over.

Never having used the drug I wonder if the increase in use has got to do with every day stress folks are feeling?

Good news on the housing, wages, economy is very hard to find.

I think overall its not a good thing in camp or any where else, I see folks that use is to be very forgetful, unmotivated in a big way and seem oblivious the world is passing them by.

Agree 100%. I got to see it happen to a lady we knew who smoked it. She used to be very friendly even letting her neighbour kids swim in her pool. She started smoking pot and it completely changed her, she became nasty yelling at the kids for playing hockey on the streets, or if a ball went in her yard she would throw it out and refused to give it back.

I don't use pot but have friends that do and it is the exact opposite of your neighbor. They are very calm and mellow. I have a Cop friend that told me he would rather deal with folks on pot than drunk folks.
I understand that pot and booze affect people differently.

I smoked a bit as a teen 50 yrs ago and not the least bit interested to try it again. I agree with your take on things.

bit off topic this time, but does have to do with pot. What ticks me off is the fact you can smoke in away where in public that you are allowed to smoke a cigarette. To me there is no difference between pot and booze, if you can smoke it walking down the street or in your boat if so inclined then I should be able to have a beer with me as I walk down the street, I don't like the smell of pot so why do I have to put up with it everywhere I go in public.
