I will be looking for an All weather Tire (Not all Season) this Spring. Would like to keep it well under 1000.00.
I have a Dodge Ram 4x4 with 20 inch rims. Whats a decent tire? I'm not using the truck for Mud Bogging or anything. But I do have the 4x4 in case I need it.
Not overly worried about the millage rating as I do an average of 10,000 km's year on the truck.
Have you considered going with an all terrain instead? You'd certainly get better off road performance.

I did look at the All Terrains but they don't give a rating for ice.
Although I am not worried about using 4X4 and I have done lots of off roading. Unless I have no choice I don't plan to drive the truck mud bogging. Yes I will use it for going up some rough terrain but for the most part we have many of our camping spots well known and only occasionally need our 4x4 if we decide to go farther we use the ATV's.
I do go in farm fields and when tree cutting and have on occasion needed 4x4 but I can always handle the situation if I do something stupid.
My biggest concern is traction in the winter when I might really need the truck,Its only used when I need it. Like Camping, hunting and hauling something as well in the winter it's needs be ready to do work when the roads are bad.

Bridgestone Dueler. I had 140,000 km on a set . Good highway tire as well as off road.

I'm very happy with my Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs. I've been using them for 2 years now. I sold my winter tires as I don't need a separate set anymore. They go one sale often at Canadian Tire for 25% off.

if you're not going offroad - I have a set of continental summer tires 20" from my Silverado that are for sale 10k on them - cheap.
They were on the truck when I bought it and they are no good for winter or off-road.
You don't need load range E tires for off-roading. You need them for hauling a lot of weight, which may be more of a concern for the OP than off-roading.Quote:

I can;t say one brand has been better for me than the others. I wear what ever my trucks and cars come with and I never had any issue and we see quite a bit of snow in Muskoak.

I got a set for 19" rims, forgot the make, but anyhow didn't drive them long enough to comment on performance. We traded the car with only 10000 km on those tires.
They were all weather rated (had the snowflake), and I know I got them for a good price ... I think $180 per tire.

The load rating is directly related to the number of plys the tire is made out of, and the number of plies determines sidewall stiffness, which prevents sidewall punctures. C = 6 ply. D = 8 ply. E = 10 ply. I've seen enough sidewall punctures ( and wranglers are the worst tire for it) to be aware its a problem and it's not covered by too many warrantys. The KO2's I've got are covered for *anything* - if it won't hold air - it gets replaced - but for that price, they should nearly give you a couple of replacement tires up front.Quote:

20” is a expensive size. In the bush most guys go with the Duratrac, darn good tire. The Goodyear adventure or General grabber might be a good option for you. Start calling tire shops, you would be surprised the “take off” they have for sale at discount pricing. Good Luck
Yeah I know the 20 inch tires are expensive and of course I had to pick the truck with the 20 inch tire.
I was also looking at the Cooper Discovery tires but a friend was telling me they tried them on their fleet of trucks and once they were have done they were useless.
There are also a brand called Linglon from China but I can't find much about them.
I have Wranglers for my old Jimmy and they were nice but I bought them used with 1000 km's on them new they are quite expensive.
I do like the Grabbers they are nice. If I wait until fall to replace the tires I could probably go higher on my price.

I've been putting used tires (265/75/16) from Kijiji on my trucks for many years. I usually pay $400-$500 for a set of 4 on rims balanced.
BFG ATs, I have Bridgestone Duelers for my Jeep, they get too hard in the winter, they are not considered a snow and ice tire but the BFG ATs are, look for the mountain on the tire. This matters, an AT is fine when you have a lot of snow but you are looking for siping and a tire that will stay pliable in the cold temperatures, I found that the Bridgestone tires were fine for deer hunting and spring time but the deep freeze I might as well have had Goodyear Wrangler GSA (Get Stuck Anywhere) tires on there, they sucked for my rig. My 4Runner I had Toyo ATs, they were great but still not winter rated, better than the Duelers but it is hard to compare the tires when moving to a heavier and longer wheelbase vehicle. For proper offroading I was running BFG MT KO tires, they were great, nice and narrow too (33x10.5), they would get down into the muck and find traction below, there is a balance between flotation and traction.
I miss having that thing on the road, 1989 YJ 4.2L I6, Nutter Bypass on the carb, 4in lift, axle swap to 4:10 gears, cable 4x4 actuator in place of the vacuum system, you could over rev it like crazy on the highway but let out the clutch and idle up hills in 4 Low if you wanted to.
Yeah I have seen those tires they are Linglon some sort of Chinese Tires I emailed about them, but never heard back.
The reviews seem OK.
Yeah I can find deals on 16 inch tires but mine are 20 inch.

For offroad in a lot of cases you do not want firm sidewalls, if you are really going off road you can air down and get a lot of flex in the sidewall, LT tires with the extra plys hurt that.Quote:

Goodyear Duratreks were fantastic in snow and mud since they're more of a cross between a AT and mud tire but they got loud at around 60k km's.
Firestone Destination AT's were mushy and didn't perform all that great, but they were cheap. Same goes for Goodyear Silent Armors.
Hankooks were OK, but were closer to an all season tire.

BTW, most AT tires are winter rated, having the snowflake/mountain emblem, and you'll get your discount on insurance for using snow tires.
I have heard the Hercules are good. I will look into the price.
Cooper Discovery has a Ice rating but I had a set on a truck last summer at work and once the wear below 50% the are useless and very prone hydroplaning
This past fall I put Falken ATW 3 all terrain 20" tires on my 2017 Dodge Ram and they are winter rated and good for 90,000K's $ 1,140.00 HST included at Tire Discounter non Dixie Road in Mississauga.
They have great ratings for snow, ice, wet, dry and off road so far have been a really good tires
Try the scrap yard or kijij. Not sure where else you can get 4 decent tires for well under $1000 brand new.Use your crappie tire money to get them installed. Might get lucky at the scrap yard and they will all ready be on rims.
Yeah I watch kijij but 20 inch is an odd ball size. Easy to find 17 and 18.

It's not difficult to read, as in you don't need to look it up. It indicates week and year it was made. You'll get different opinions on age. Some will say just because it looks ok doesn't mean it is. Apparently even though they may look brand new they still deteriorate with age.Quote:

BTW - the 20" size is not as much as an oddball as it used to be. Not sure about Ford's, but Dodge and GM put them on some fairly plain trucks. And depending on the brand of tires, some 20" tires are about the same price as an 18" of the same model. For the KO2's for example - $18 per tire.

I have seen belts break in New tires and old ones. On my cars I have been installing used ties for the past 15 years and never had one go bad. However when I buy used ones I carefully look them over. On average I pay 20 bucks a tire and usually they have a max maybe 10 - 20 K on them. Put it this way I easily get 80,000 on my tires. I have never worried about expiry dates.
The truck on the other hand will at times be out in the middle of no place and since those tires will be on there for 5 - 10 years I plan to buy new.

On my 2011 Ram I’m on my 4th set of tires, Goodyear Wrangler HPs came with it, rode smooth but basically fair weather tires Rib type tread
Then I put on Michelin LTX, nice ride but kinda suck in snow and heavy rain (hydroplane too easy) Rib type tread
Next we’re Goodyear Wilderness AT, aggressive tread lug type, good traction, need to be rotated twice as often (10,000 km) rough ride
Last, my current set, Goodyear Silent Armour, by far the best of the lot. Ride good, a little firm, you’ll notice sharp bumps, aggressive lug type tire, good in snow, but no snowlake. Tread design very similar to the Goodyear ATS of which I have 3 sets on my last truck including 3 years living in Sault Ste. Marie and I loved them.
Bottom line you aware going to spend $1200-$1300 on tires for your truck, trust me, I’ve looked extensively and my preference for the money is the Goodyear Silent Armour

Yeah I agree it`s going to be around there unless I see a good sale. I should get about 500 for the old Jimmy and have about 300 in scrap in the back yard so that will actually pay for most of the tires.

Duratracs are great tires in my experience. So far I have nothing but positive things to say about them. I think Mark uses them too on his F250. Check with him for further reviews.
