I guess i'll take the early lead. (i'll add a pic with my shotgun later but for now i don't have one)
First bird ever, 6:20am. Shotgun. Not going to lie, i kind of got lucky. I was poorly prepared this year but i took a shot and set up near a roost from years past. at about 5:45 he gobbled 50 yds to my left. gobbled almost non stop for the next 20 minutes till he flew down. he had 3 hens with him but didn't take too kindly to the jake decoy i had out with my feeding hen. His already had some noticable missing feathers from previous fights so i knew he'd come in. Shot him at 8 yds, 30 minutes into the season.

Congratulations! An early and commanding lead in this contest. And an awesome FIRST bird - wow, way to go.
After passing on a couple persistent jakes this morning, I bagged a nice tom with my 16ga Sauer drilling. First turkey with this gun!

2. Dilly - 82.5
Opening Day Bird!
Had Toms out in the field for the morning, but a boat load of hens kept them occupied and none would come to the decoys. So I headed back to the same spot at 5pm and called this nice Tom in and put the smack down on him at 6:20pm with my 12 ga. Remington 870 with a gobbler stopper choke
My digital scale messed up on me, so i had to use an old one, so it’s a little hard to read, before my digital broke it was reading 24lbs, but ths one shows 23lbs so go with that.

After watching a pair of toms strutting in a field after 7pm two nights in a row I was able to determine where they were roosted. My brother and I hunted them Sunday morning but they never showed. We went back Monday morning and I got real close to the roost and I had one down 5 minutes into legal shooting time. A very quick hunt and was only 15 minutes late for work.

Had my father down for the weekend, plan was to hunt both days if necessary to fill his tag, something he hasn't done in years and years. He just left for home, without a bird, but my season is over (at least as a shooter).
Went out to a new place yesterday morning, hadn't scouted much, but got lucky and ended up hearing a gobbler near where we set-up on a nice little regenerating field. I was behind my Dad, under some pines and behind several large boulders. He was all set up in the turkey lounger with my 870, plan was for me to call and video. Wouldn't you know it, the turkey flew down, hit the ground, and ran, and I mean ran in behind our set-up. It was all I could do to turn around, and get my back-up Versamax duck gun (loooong barrel) up and around the tree and it was all over. Turkey/Coyote full choke and 3.5" Longbeard #6. He never saw the decoys, and sure didn't read the script. 6:18 am and a nice first bird on this property, 1-1/8" spurs and a beard that went 11.25" (a few long ones, most of his beard was broke off shorter), so 101.25 with the 12 ga:

Tried two other spots, blew it not waiting long enough at the second and ran into a nice tom coming to see us just as we had decided to try and stalk closer to him. Next place had a distant gobbler, then nothing till lunch, so we called it a day.
Back to spot #2 this morning with the crossbow early. Got busted on the way in, spooking a hen off the roost - not good. Her flushing departure alerted a nearby gobbler, who started gobbling his head off. So we hastily set-up short of the intended open area, behind a large deadfall. Same strutter with a trimmed beard and a real fan, arranged as a Jake fan, and an Avian laydown hen in front. The tom hit the ground, and spent the next hour with real hens in the field. Eventually he began to search for that other hen hung up back in the woods, and I cut him off every time he gobbled. I couldn't see, as I was again behind the shooter, behind a big log. The sun was in our face, so I didn't film, not wanting to risk a reflection. He came in strutting, spitting and drumming, full strut (I could only hear, sorta like listening to a baseball game on the radio), and I knew it was going well when I heard him trash the decoy. I risked a peak as the old man raised my Micro and fired, and the tom just stood there, staring at the toppled tom decoy. He slowly deflates, and I ask my dad what happened. He says "it went right through him, give him a sec". Well, a that was a long second, and then another and a third, and he starts strutting and talking to the decoys. It was under 15 yards, and a clear shot, what the? Now, have you ever tried to a micro by hand? I managed, got in another quill, and sealed the deal, second tag filled, and still no bird for my father.......
1-1/8" spurs, 10.5" beard, and a crossbow bonus gives 102.5

After we get up and take a good look around, we find a fresh gouge right across the top of the log - the first shot looked clear through the scope, but the quill being a bit lower down was just low enough to hit the top of the log and deflect. Never did find that quill or broadhead, but happy we got a second chance on that tom <<I checked Excalibur's webpage, and the advertised draw weight of the Micro is 270 lbs! Amazing what you can do when a tom is standing in front of you! Don't forget your cocking rope..........>>

Great day Lenny. WTG!
Thanks Dilly, it was an exciting 24.25 hours! Best part was when I got home and pulled the cards on my trailcam, I already had 2 toms at my place right off the roost this morning, while I was hunting somewhere else......

Nice birds Lenny congrats. I’ve been the hen whisper for the last week. The area I’ve been hunting is loaded with them this year. It’s been hard trying to get the boys away from so many hens
It often seems like that in the early season. I have found a few strategies that can work when there are lots of hens to compete with:
A- get in tight and get him right off the roost, before any live hens can interrupt
B - wait till mid to late morning after the action slows down
C - use a strutter, and make him think there is some competition invading his territory
D - just wait till later in the season.
Went out Saturday morning in the fog and as i was walking the gobbling started.
I got the decoys set up quickly and sat down made a few call and 2 to 3 toms were gobbling over and over.
A big hen came out yelping and purring all the way to the decoys and then 2 jakes came out shortly after and made their way also.
In the meantime the toms were still goblling so I passed on the decoys and waited to see if i could coax them in but nothing at first.
The hens and the jakes made their way down the field away from me and 2 of the toms followed them.
They all made to about a hundred yards in the middle for the field and i could barely see them thru the fog but they were still gobbling at my calls.
just in behind them i could make out a group of deer making their way to my set up they got to within 50 yards and stared feeding all the while keeping on aye on the dekes.
So I got aggressive with my calling and did some fighting purrs and one of the toms started making his way to my dekes.
He came in to my dekes and started strutting around the jake decoy so i gave him a loud call and he lifted his head and i took the shot and down he went.

I should get a bonus for the longest shot I ever took 70 paces.
Morning started out with this gobbler that likes to gobble his guts out but has a harem of hens with him at all times and doesn’t move. I thought by now he would of been freed up but not the case. I call him the entertainer bird, he’s there to keep you busy until a different bird comes in the area for me to harvest lol and that’s what happened exactly, a different bird came in gobbling with another Jake and three hens. The boss hen saw my decoys and didn’t want to share. She led the group parallel to me but going away about 60 to 70 yards, I contemplated if I should shoot or not but haven’t shot a bird that far before. I’ve patterned my gun using long beard XR to 50 yards and more but was happy with the pattern up to 40 or less. I never had to shoot more then 30 or under until today. To make a long story short I downed this bird at 70 paces no lie. I had to step on his head to finish him off but that was mostly just nerves. I’m not proud I had to shoot that far, I am more surprised that I did and was successful. I am happy none the less, just wish it was more texted book.
A much nicer weekend day to turkey hunt today! I know we will be hearing from thegeet sometime, as he had a nice tom come in this morning that I got to watch.
MarkyMark, unfortunately you didn't enter the contest before the season started, but that is a great bird, and would score 105 here, so would have been a solid second place.
Buzz, congrats on a great second bird, and for getting that young lad out - he looks pretty happy with Dad's tom!
And finally, we get to see an entry from tomgobble! Nice job with a long poke, you are luckier than me!

Keep em coming!
Been taking a bunch of birds for granted the last couple years and it resulted in me eating tag soup last year. This year, the first week I spent relearning harsh lessons about some basics I'd started to cheat on. The second week was spent getting serious and working much harder at studying old toms than I had been.
I knew when and where this bird and his compadre Tom preferred to be most days, but had never hunted pressured birds before and had no idea going into my hunts just how wary and sneaky they can be. Any movement, any sound and they were gone without a moment's hesitation or backwards glance. I could set up on a route i'd watched them use 2 days straight, but when i was there they would skirt by just a few yards out of range. I actually witnessed 2 groups of jakes running away from a single yelping sequence on my 3rd day... after spending 2 days yelping trying to locate these birds. lol I didn't find out until a week later that neighbours are often hunting nearby and even on the farm i had access too, and it was common for them to rip around on atvs until they saw birds, then jump off the atv and immediately begin calling to them. SMH
Anyways, on the day of this hunt i actually was just visiting the farm to check on my honeybees in the middle of a rainy afternoon and as i was entering the nearly kilometre long lane i noticed this guy and a hen working a fence line between fields. I didn't have faith in my ability to get set up on birds in the middle of the field, but decided to give it a try. It took me 25 mins to work around the entire farm, rear pastures, cedar woods and back to the proper field again and when i arrived at the spot i had expected the birds to work towards, the field was empty. I sat and tried soft calls for a few minutes hoping to (at best) get a response or (at worst) perhaps spook them out of hiding just so i'd know where they went. No response, no spooking.
After a few more minutes i decided to walk up the fence-line to figure out where they'd gone and could see where they'd been tearing into old tree stumps just moments before. The field was very muddy so i had been sticking close to the fence but hit a patch of really nasty thorn bushes and as one snapped out from under my boot and shot up to snag my crotch i had to stumble sideways into the field a few feet... and that's when i saw his bright red head shoot up from some weeds he'd been digging in and start turning to run/fly away. He was about 35 yards away which is the max range for my 20ga with longbeards, but i risked the shot as I knew i'd never get this close again. The cone of shot actually clipped the top of his head, not lethally, and took both wings out at the mid-joint. Had the finishing shot into him just a couple seconds later. He didn't even flap.
Beard is very close to 11 inches but i cannot get it to lie flat without having my hands on it, so 10.5" it is for the contest.
Spurs are nearly matched at half a hair shy of 1 3/16s... so... 1 11/64? lol
Edit to add: No bonus, score 100 i think.

Nice job Oddmott. Re-measure that beard with someone holding it straight and flat, we may have a 3 way tie for second place!
I tried. I think the issue is the cell phone cam. It seems to be distorting the image a bit. I may dig out the DSLR tomorrow if needed.
I took a full pic, then without lifting my finger i took closer shots of both ends for clearer details of where the tape lies.
Beard measures 11 1/16
A note to everyone... don't forget to pick up your dead turkey pieces when done photographing... or else your cat will use them as toys.

Wow, some really nice birds guys. I was lucky enough to get out last Saturday with Lenny. Second set up of the morning and things happened fast. Lenny’s great calling had the birds coming in on a string. Dropped him at about 15 yards with the Benelli. Unfortunately in my haste to breast him out I forgot to take photos with the beard still on. So took a couple after the autopsy. Having trouble posting them so Lenny will post them later. Not a winner but decent enough.

We sat in gobble free silence at our first place last Saturday, and I mean silence. So we pulled out and relocated to a second farm, snuck in, got the decoys set up, made some tentative hen calls, and got an immediate response - from a coyote. This thing was within 100 yards, and kept howling, over and over, like it was stuck in a trap. Then the toms started up, between us and the yote. I'd never heard anything like it, I was calling, and the yote and toms seemed to be answering. This went on for at least 15 minutes, but the tom came in, had a bigger silent tom and several jakes with him. Never did see the yote, or hear him again after the shot. I thought for sure the hunt was a bust with a yote calling that close, but it didn't seem to worry those toms in the least. Nice bird for thegeet!

With "some" nice looking weather this long weekend, we will hopefully see some more birds entered. Will anyone be able to challenge parkcity???? I've seen a bird behind my place with hooks that belong in a bag of Bugles, but he's gonna have to wait until next year........
Bag of bugles....LOL! Good one
I've got my eyes on a bigger bird, but work is nuts and time is short. Doubt I'll be able to bag him this year.
I was able to connect on my second tom of the season yesterday on the holiday Monday. 5:30 PM bird spot and stalk style. 21 lbs, 10.75" beard and 7/8" spurs with the shotgun (Total Score = 88.75). Very similar size to my first bird of the year. He was part of a group of 3 toms that have been together all season. I have seen them together on numerous hunts so it was nice to finally catch up to one of them. The bugs were getting real bad by my place this weekend so it is nice to be tagged out. Good luck to everyone still after them.

Well done. The bugs are getting horrible, don't envy anyone still out there.
This weeks cool weather sure has kept the bugs down, and we are now in the final week. Had a great day yesterday with 3 strutters and 5 hens hanging out in the back field. Here's a member of our hunt camp who came down to my place and got his second tom ever.

Today's rain put a damper on this mornings hunt with thegeet. Had a few gobblers vocal off the roost, but still competing with lots of live hens going to the gobblers, who were rooted in place in the woods. Must be the cool spring, and maybe a bit of delay in the season, or could it be a second clutch for many hens? Normally the toms are on the prowl this late in the season, and the hens want nothing to do with them! Just before it started to rain this morning, everything shutdown. 6 days to go this season.........
CD94, nice job with the second bird, puts you in second place for the two-bird total!
Good luck to everyone between now and next Friday.

Good luck to all on the last day today! I’ve got 2 hunters this morning hoping to fill their tags with a last chance bird.
Hard to believe another season has snuck by but it was another good one. Lots of great hunts with family and friend and lots of quality birds. I connected on 2 great toms and realized I had better get them submitted before the deadline.
First Tom was a big one topping the scales over the 24# mark, he was a tough bird and he didn’t come easy!
24.3lbs
11” beard and some nice hooks at 1-1/4”
Second bird was another big boy with A true “paintbrush” and another nice set of hooks although one was shorter, had been broken at some point but was back to being sharp
22.8lbs
1-1/4” spur (longest)
9-3/4” beard

Another great season has come and gone. Congrats to everybody who managed to punch a tag!!! Thanks to duckslayer I tagged out with a great tom. He managed to get us right into his bedroom. Thanks to everyone who participated, contributed, and especially to our prize sponsors Turkey Slayer Custom Calls, GobbleStalker Custom Turkey Calls for the awesome prize packs, Dilly for the amazing box call and Oddmott for the beeswax based lotion bars. Stay tuned for a couple random draws still to come, and let me know what you learned this year and what you are going to do differently next year.
Better late than never - all the hunters who registered but didn't enter a bird got put in a hat, and two names were randomly drawn - the winners of the Random Draw prizes are BigBuckHunt and Ottawa_Rob!
Prizes will be mailed out. Congrats to our winners in this year's contest - Parkcity, Duckslayer, BigBuckHunt and Ottawa_Rob!
Thanks Lenny, I got my package the other day.
With this late post for a second I thought it was turkey season again LOL
Not yet Tom gobble! Just trying to get the prizes out. Despite multiple PMs and posting here, haven’t heard back, from random draw winner BigBuckHunt, so drew another name, and GW11 is our lucky winner.
