New Hunter

Hey guys, I've been interested in starting hunting for a long time but work never co operated with the necessary courses to get my PAL and hunter safety, until now. I'm only interested in hunting small game, grouse and rabbits mostly and gradually work up to larger game. Now I have very little friends that hunt so I'm learning on my own which is fine by me, but when it comes to choosing the proper firearm I'm a little lost. I would like 1 gun that is able to hunt grouse and rabbit. I've been considering either a .410 or a 12 gauge. I've been leaning to the 12 being that the ammo is considerably cheaper, and I could eventually use it to hunt larger game as well. But would it be too much? I don't want to blow them to pieces I want to eat them :). I'm okay with going into the stores and asking questions but I don't want the guy to think I'm completely lost and try to take advantage of that either. What do you use? Gauge/choke/shot?

A 410 is an experts gun, get the 12ga, get one that you can buy accessories for and you will be able to hunt anything with it.

A Remington 870, Mossberg 500, both good guns with different barrels for hunting everything from doves to moose.

This is a common misconception of a lot of new hunters. Have hunted woodcock for most of my life with a 12 gauge. Aside from one (that's a story for another time) have not blown them up. Range and choke will determine how many pellets will be in the game.
Hard to say what will work for you. Are up North where rabbits and grouse are more likely to hold still? Are you down south where game is a little more skittish and running/flying shots are expected?
.410 would work but your error of margin is small, ammo is relatively expensive, and pretty much limited to upland. 12 would be your do all gun guess the only disadvantage is weight. Which gets more noticeable the older you get. Pushing bush all day arms can get tired. Might want to consider a 20 gauge as its the smallest gauge that you can hunt most every thing while keeping weight down.

Turkey 12 gauge browning full choke 3"
Waterfowl 12 gauge browning choke switched to improved cyl or mod 3" depending
pheasant 12 gauge browning 2 3/4" choke switched to improved cycl
woodcock 20 gauge weatherby in youth model 2 3/4" improved cyl (the weatherby is 3" capable if I wish to use for any of the above with the appropriate choke

There is so much which could be written here on the topic, but I'll keep it very simple and not rob you of the forthcoming enjoyment of discovery over the next fifty years. Asking a question such as this will derive as many different responses as you are physically capable of reading.
Anyway, whichever gun you choose by far the most important thing you can do for yourself is to learn your gun, how it performs and its limitations. As a new shooter, you will also be burdened with having to learn the mechanics of how to shoot and your limitations as a shooter. The thing to remember is you can't do one properly without the other.
As you progress over the years, the opinions you have gained will likely change as you continue to grow into the sport.
All that being said, yes likely a versatile 12 gauge pump is not a bad place to start as long as you keep to standard 1 1/8 oz #6 and #7 1/2 loads in a skeet to modified choke. One of the biggest mistakes I see new shooters make is over gunning themselves unnecessarily when learning how to shoot. You don't need big uncomfortable loads to hunt small game with. Remember that wild turkeys were made extinct here in Ontario with 2 1/2" shells.
One of the beauties of the lighter gauges and a .410 is they are a pleasure to shoot. That's actually the gun I taught my son to shoot with because it fit him very well, and didn't kick the heck out of his shoulder. He could comfortably learn shooting technique without flinching and has since developed into a very proficient wing shot. He's better than I am now but you didn't hear me say that.
It's all about striking a balance when learning.

id say grab a 870 combo. you wont use the rifled barrel until you want to hunt big game but itll save you some money in the long run. im grabbing a 870 in about a week, pretty sure all in with tax for the combo itll come out to about 730 bucks CAN at SAIL and basspro anyways.

you made a right choice by asking here first, best place for advice :)

if you want to practice with your new gun and be sure you wont shoot a hole in your wall maybe grab some dummy rounds to practice loading it and unloading it? just some suggestions hopefully everything goes well! good luck!

I'm surprise no one has mentioned a 16ga.....lots of ammo available (good variety), great Turkey gun and from experience great for rabbit, ground hogs, skunks and porcupines :)

$20 a box for shells, slugs are hard to find and nothing rifles in Canada, no new guns with accessories unless you have deep pockets.

You know my love of the 16ga but I would not tell someone to buy one, don't need any more competition for gun show ammo, ha ha, I already have you to compete with.

$1700 USD, compared to $400 CAD for an 870.

I have been watching the 16ga ammo options going up and then down again in the last few years. When the A5 was brought back there were a bunch of steel loads, #2 and #4 for ducks and geese. There were 1 1/4oz loads from Federal brought back, #4,5,6, then they went away, the 1 1/4oz loads are no longer listed. You can find 1 1/8oz loads but they are not popular and there is a reason I have been collecting. They used to load lead shot from #9 to SSG and slugs as well, from 1oz to 1 1/4oz loads. The only thing you can really find now is 1 1/8oz #4 and #6 shot, the odd #1 Buck is around too and some slugs, but really tough, at least here, the US and the UK may be different.

Save your pennies and buy a nice quality gun. Something that is nice handling and shooting, wont let you down in the field and most of all, Make your hunting buddies jealous LOL.

Lifes too short to hunt with a cheap gun.

Cheap or cost effective? For me a bush gun has to be reliable of course but also shouldn't have to worry about scratching the thing.

Bought a Lee Enfield for $35 back in 2002, shot a deer with it last year, groups 2in at 100 yards, cheap and effective.

My buddy traded a good Ruger 44 mag semi auto carbine for a good looking sporterized Lee Enfield, it wouldn't shoot any better than a 6 to 7 inch group off a benchrest.

I said cheap lol, As in cheap thin bluing, Plastic Tupperware stocks, garbage sights, rough actions.

I have a Marlin 30 30 trapper model that would be more deadly throwing it at an animal than trying to shoot it. I felt bad buying it for $50 off an old retired hunter but now I think I got ripped off. I think someone ruined the barrel trying to clean it, not sure but thought the barrel was bent by how far off it shoots.

Yes, the sweet sixteens are an awesome gauge, and what many would say the ideal all-around shotgun. I have a few of them and they are a delight to use.
A good used one can be had for a great price too because they lack the popularity of the 12 gauge. I guess I just proved that above. Haha.
$150 will find you one in about 95% condition. One thing one has to remember though is that they won't have interchangeable chokes and the barrels won't accept steel shot. In the case above though, for grouse and rabbit one would be ideal, especially for the price. It can be upgraded as the hunter grows. Hey, nobody has just one gun right?

Another option is reloading which we also do. We reload Bismith for waterfowling.

What ever he buys, getting the gun fitted to him will make a world of difference. It's hard enough trying to figure out what you did right and what you did wrong well learning to shoot. Having the center of your pattern three inches to the side and two inch below your point of aim will NOT make your day any better.

If your lucky a miracle will happen but don't count on it.

I started with an 870 Express in 12g then to the benelli in 12g, the day I bought a 20g for small game changed my opinion forever. A couple pounds doesn't seem like much until you try to hold it for a couple hour hike. That being said, I love to hunt waterfowl, so the 12 was the better option for me when I could only afford 1 gun.

You can always trade in or sell what you have once you figure out what you want.

My thought is that if the gun is 50+ years old, still shoots and still runs right then it will not break, ha ha.

I have bought 4 guns new, 2 of which are muzzleloaders, I do not trust others to clean up black powder for the most part.

I have spent very little on very good guns and watched guys spend thousands on guns and scopes that shot much worse than my $150 rifle with a Bushnell on top of it.

Found an 870 in 16ga, an Express. They only made them for 3 years, it is setup for steel (bought 3 boxes of #2 steel for ducks) and has interchangeable chokes but they are like hens teeth. The only problem is that this gun is build on a 12ga receiver, literally a 12ga 870 barrel fits on to the receiver. The gun is as heavy as my 12ga 870, the main point of a 16ga was a lighter gun than a 12 that hit harder than a 20.

My fear is that I will end up with a separate cabinet just for 16ga guns, ha ha ha, better stay away from my local gun shows Jeff, ha ha ha ha.

Lots of good comments here, except the one that says trade..

20 or 12ga would be my recommendation. It won't be the last gun you buy anyway. Like others have said fit is really important. Not all guns are made equal. I was looking for an over/under couple years ago. Went to 4 different gun shops. Of course they showed me the high end ones first. Cost wasn't my concern fit was. I pulled each gun up and looked down the barrel to see if it sighted well for me. Almost all of the guns wouldn't fit me. I would have to have my cheek way above or couldn't get the beads to ling up. One store owner told me the 3000 gun I had in my hands would be perfect. I couldn't sight it, he said give it to me and he tried. He couldn't either. I ended up buying a gun that was the cheapest as it fit the best. So morel of story is price doesn't matter it is the personal fit. Go to as many shops as you can and try holding them up and pointing at something high on the wall. See if you can sight properly. I did go with 2 beads as you can line them up. After time you will just shoot and not line them up. I think a lot of people just get that front bead on the target and pull trigger. You will shoot high every time. Get down and sight down the barrel to the front sight. Good luck

You can still share a shotgun till you get the pal, but now you have to not only find a hunting buddy but also a supervisor..

You will likely not be doing much if any hunting with a gun this year. If you are lucky you may catch the late goose season in the spring, and a couple weeks of rabbit.

It was received by them on the 22nd of August. So if I understand correctly that's when the 28 day waiting period starts, now I know that's a minimum and that it could take much longer. But if if I understand correctly the 28 day period includes weekends? So that will be up this week. So here's to just hoping it's gets processed quickly after that date. If not I'll have lots of time to save up for guns for next season :)

it took me about 2 months after i had taken the test to get my paperwork back in the mail(september to the end of november) i sent it out with the money order beginning of december and didn't have card until the last week of june. like the other guy said, you might get lucky

just seeing this thread again now, when i sent mine in it took them awhile. once it was approved it still took them about 4 weeks to actually get to me. i would call them and ask them if they have mailed it yet. once its approved they still have to mail them. i called them a few times just trying to see what was going on and if they needed anything else and if they've mailed it yet.

Mine came in 2 weeks after it was shown as approved on the website. Already went and bought a Remington 870 12 gauge and a Ruger 10/22 and put a few birds in the freezer.

Well I'd imagine the first thing they would say is to try different ammo. But if something doesn't work or malfunctions because the bolt or someother part is not made properly or up to QC it would be fixed. I've gone through about 20 shells now and haven't had a problem. My Ruger 10/22 on the other hand has a failure to eject atleast once per clip.

The Ruger will have a pretty strong recoil spring since it's brand new. Wife has one and even after hundreds of rounds it will not eject if you feed it sub-standard Velocity ammo.

I bought a remington 870 a few years ago and while i was shooting trap my magazine cap came loose and the next few shots broke my ejector spring. Technically it was my fault for not tightening the magazine cap but Remington covered it under warranty anyway. I was a happy customer after that and my next purchase was a 597 instead of the Rugerr 10/22. The warranty process did take about 2 monthes to complete though.

Hey guys, I've been interested in starting hunting for a long time but work never co operated with the necessary courses to get my PAL and hunter safety, until now. I'm only interested in hunting small game, grouse and rabbits mostly and gradually work up to larger game. I don't want to blow them to pieces I want to eat them :). I'm okay with going into the stores and asking questions but I don't want the guy to think I'm completely lost and try to take advantage of that either. What do you use? Gauge/choke/shot?

12 gauge is definitely more versatile. My first gun was a Remington 870 Express 12 gauge. When I first got into hunting, I was into rabbits & waterfowl. And it worked great. Later on I bought a rifled barrel for deer hunting. For rabbits & grouse I use #6 shot and I’ve never had a problem

I am kind of in the same shoes now. Complete beginner. When buying gun in cabelas only got attitude in response when asking about how to fit the gun to.myself.
Are there any professionals that.might help? What would such service cost in ballpark?

You might try Precision Arms , on King Rd. east of # 400 Hwy.
You may have to be careful on how you approach them, sometimes they have an attitude problem also.
They are at 2974 King Rd.

If you are the type for reading, look up "stock fitter's bible" by Rollin Oswald it will teach you a whole lot about gun fit. I read this book a few years ago and have adjusted my own shotguns ever since. I've had plenty of sour experiences with gun shop folks treating me like it's a burden to answer a couple questions.

thats sad that you were intimidated when wanting to get into the sport.
i think back to the days of the fellows at the bow shop in waterloo, the excalibur guys and the awesome dudes at shooters choice. they taught me alot about the equipment and the sport. I asked a ton of stupid questions and they answered with grace.

newbie if someone behind the counter is giving you guff, take your cash somewhere else. there's quite a few smaller stores that are happy to help you out. just dont show up during the beginning of hunting season... i wouldn't blame anyone behind the counter for being snappy during that crazy rush...

I’m going to be very opinionated here. Buy yourself a Beretta! Will last you a lifetime. Especially if you can find yourself a 303, 390 or 391 in excellent condition. Either 12 or 20. You can shoot all game . Check out the websites, Epps, GAGNON, Accuracy Plus, Eli’s . You will find yourself a excellent quality Beretta for a decent price that will last you for as long as you live!

Odd....I’ve either fired or seen thousands of rounds fired out of 870’s over the years, I’ve never seen a mag cap come loose.....operator error ?????

Possibly human error, but I not a fan of hand tight on the cap.

Yea like I said it was my own fault. I cleaned it the week before and didn’t tighten it down all the way. I may have been distracted with something else while putting it back together
I make it a point to check it every time I use my 870 now!
