9.3x62 with a 285 spire point or a 300 grain hollow point from a 450 marlin. Honestly the heavier and slower rounds perform best. I have guided hunters to around 30 bears and would rather see a 30-30 then any magnum. And nothing under .30 cal. Sure smaller calibers can kill bears but my bear last fall taken with the 9.3 was the quickest kill I have witnessed.

When I get the chance.......................270 with winchester super X 150 gr
45 70, 325 grain leverloution. Never had any animal go more than 10 yards (moose, bear, deer)
.308. Fed Trophy Copper
I flip a coin, this year 308 turned up.
Last 6 have been with the 35 Whelen using either 225 grain Accubonds or 250 grain partitions. Recovery varied from bang flop to 12 yards.
Either a .270Win (150gr PSP) or .30-06Sprg (165gr PSP) .....whichever I happen to have with me at the time. I have no problem popping them with a 12ga slug if that's all I've got.
12g slug, rifled barrel
Not me, but a 243 is in our group every year
Im going to use 200gr Winchester Silvertips from my 308WIN this year because, why not?
I've used everything from 12 gauge slugs & buckshot, 25:06, 30:06 and a Ruger 96/44 mag.
All have worked fine.
Some just shine better in certain situations.

A few years ago we were stalked all the way to our cabin door and then charged.
I've seen countless bears over the past 50 plus years and have never worried. Since then I've been keeping my 30/30 carbine handy. My son just picked up an 870 pump with a 13" barrel so we're gonna use that from now on as the camp gun. Likely put a slug in it with a couple follow up OO's.
I've only shot nuisance bears, using a .30-30 or a .280 Remington.
If I were going to actually hunt black bear I would likely use my .30-30 Ackley with Barnes 150's.
303 british.....pretty slow heavy roud.....it wont go far
Maybe the bullet will stay in the bear.
i sported a 6.5x55. was a good all around choice when bushwacking northern ontario.
You do know that a 180gr .303 zeroed at 200 yds will have a -60" (5 FEET ) hold over for it to hit a target at 500 yd and will have less than 1,000 ft/lbs of energy (ethical minimum to kill a deer).
So you might not be stretching it to say hunters are killing deer with it at 800 yds HaHa...
Only wealthy southern hunters had those. I was 21 years old before I found out there was someone beside Dominion Arms that made rifle ammo. That was the year I finally ran out of the ammo I got for my Birthdays and in my Xmas stocking since I was 9 years old.
I miss my No 4 rifle.
You don't seem to have a grasp of gravity; if zeroed at 200 yds and take a shot at a target 200 yds away and miss, that 180 gr bullet will only continue for another 200-300 yds before it hits the ground...considering -60" drop is about what you have when to are standing and taking a shot.
I just bought myself a ruger American in 450 bushmaster. So going to give it a try this weekend
Saw a great option for a Bear Gun/Ammo...
The M1 Garand service rifle chambered for .458 Winchester Magnum
Love the quote " This quick firing custom elephant gun can save you from claw and tooth in a hurry. "Quote:
The classic military M1 Garand service rifle is typically chambered in the military .30/06 cartridge. What if it was rechambered into an elephant gun?
When McCann Industries converted this M1 Garand to the mighty .458 Winchester Belted Magnum, they did it right.
The heavy recoil is slowed and somewhat tamed by an excellent muzzle brake and a cylinder of mercury in the butt stock. This means you can down that mighty beast with this super caliber and not break your shoulder in the process.
This quick firing custom elephant gun can save you from claw and tooth in a hurry.
303.....180 grains.....from short distances its a cannon
I have a 1.5" thick (135lb) steel plate at the 100 yds panel. The 174 gr 303 (FMJ) doesn't dimple it much.....but the 165 gr (Vital Shok) 308 leaves a crater. I was surprised, but pics proves out.
Top two .303 (steel jacket fused)... bottom three .308

Long range is relative to your calibre as well.
.22Lr 50 yards is a good poke.
100 yards is long range.
.223/5.56 100 to 200 yards is a good
poke.
300 yards is long Range.
.308. 300 yards is a good poke.
500 is a long poke.
500+ your doing some math.
My go to is my .303 with 180gr winchester power points.
.308 Hornady 150gn American Whitetail
270 Sako hammerhead 156 grain
