Today was the opening day of calf moose season in northern ontario.....first hour had a cow come out with no calf....pretty disapointed...anyways just wondering did she realy have no calf or was the calf just hidden....let me know if you guys have any opinions on that.
He could have been killed by wolves ect too
It’s not uncommon for a cow to keep her calves hidden when they are younger, depending on where you saw her. If she was out in a cutover, I’d say she didn’t have a calf. At this age, calves won’t be far from the cow...
I don't think what you saw is uncommon. Of the cows I've seen hunting moose, it's been 50/50 to see a calf tagging along
Young calves are never farther than a few steps from the mother. If you did not see one, she probably did not have one.
Sad to see that a large number of cows do not have surviving calves. Bad omen for the future moose population.
Bad for future and bad for hunting....where i hunt it is next to impossible to get adult tags so when i encounter cows and there aint a calf it kinda sucks
I'm still amazed Ontario allows calf hunting while Moose numbers are on downward spiral..

It eould kinda make sense if the bull would be the givin tag instead of calf....at lesst where i am we mostly see bulls through the summer months.
IMHO, it would make more sense to issue cow tags ( if they are bent on issuing them), that are for a cow OR a calf. Many hunters I know would take the calf.....but I guess that wouldn’t reduce cow/bull ratios....Quote:

The "logic" behind issuing moose tags has been just killing me!!!
So, in my humble opinion, they should just completely STOP the moose hunt for 3 years.
If we really want to help the population and give the MNRF a chance to get their act together and perhaps consult some actual hunters(!), and come up with a logical moose hunting system, then I will gladly put moose out of my mind for 3 years. Why is that so hard to do?!

I dont know....I would hope so, but what if there's 13 guys to a gang....have one tag (cow or calf) and a cow and twin calves steps out....shoot one calf and maybe get 10lbs of meat per person? Or shoot the cow and get 50lbs per person?Quote:

NW Ontario the population may be fine but central and eastern Ontario not so much. I rarely see moose when driving up north to see family, used to always see tracks in the bush and now that is even way down.Quote:

An all out ban on Moose hunting in most WMU's might be warranted however it would bankrupt the MNR in lost revenue.

Lol. You must have no idea how many moose are taken at almost anytime of the year by them. Many have given up on the hunt completely due to tag availability, lack of moose, etc.. Cows need to be harvested for balance in any herd.Quote:

These comments are completely the opposite of what I heard from two of my friends that are full time commercial bush pilots out of Nakina and Thunder Bay. Between the two of them, they pretty much fly all of the wmu's in north, NE, amd NW Ontario, on a daily basis. Both report that their daily aerial sightings of moose are more than 70% down from 8-10 years ago. Some areas that were formerly the highest densities (eg. around T. Bay) are more than 90% down. Areas around Gogama and Timmins, Long Lac, etc are almost devoid of moose now according to them. They also both own their own planes on floats, and they even report that they're having some tough hunts and have even been unable to fill their own personal tags in the past couple of years, even after flying into remote areas.Pretty bad when you have your own float plane and can't find a moose to put in the freezer!Quote:

Yup. Political suicide. Sad case for sure. But thats the past. Its really quite simple.....its almost 2020....if you are going to hunt buy a license and enter the draw...FN or not!!!!!! Also lets look at how other provinces and countries manage their moose. The moose hunt is the biggest hunt we have in ontario i my opinion and we are ruining it at an alarming rate.

The way i think this will play out is-most of the moose WILL BE wiped out(soon)in Ontario,perhaps else too.Then the politicians will be forced to do something to protect the remainder of the moose ,and they will have some good excuse then, to pick the fight.
They will be then the good boys to protect the diminishing specie.....in this,once major Moose Powerhouse.
Alas all this will be too little -too late.With absolute no benefit to anyone.
Us ,moose hunters need to prepare for "rainy days".
