Gun Safe Question

I'm wondering if Costco still sells gun safes. Was told by a police officer/hunter that it's the best place to get them. They go for about $350, fire rated, etc. and would sell for about $600 at Bass Pro. I'll have to drop in and ask, as calling is all but useless.

I'm told when they're in stock they fly off the shelves, so wondering if anyone knows what time(s) of year they carry them.

Welcome to the forum. Canadian Tire has excellent all-purpose safes,too,and Amazon has a full line.

Thanks Trimmer21, I did check but I'll have another look. Basically I want something heavy as opposed to just a cabinet, and hoping to get a good deal because I hate paying full price.

Thanks kmcclemont! I did have a look at that one and it's more of a cabinet style in terms of the weight.

A friend of mine, now in his 80s, years ago got an 800 lb Treadlock 12-gun safe second hand from the RCMP. I don't know if police departments do sell-offs anymore... ?

Look up Hunter Safes there in Hamilton

TSC has the Stack-On line, some are the cheaper metal cabinets and other are the heavier fire-rated ones. When they go on sale I think the price is as good as anywhere else.

Thanks for the link! The ones online are more expensive than the ones I heard about. Dropped into Costco today (so tranquil on a Saturday) and asked about it. They said they sell them online only, and there were 0 at any of the other stores. So either they are correct and Costco has stopped carrying them in-store, or they just come in a couple of times a year but sell out in a few days.

Currently, TSC only has the lighter cabinets. The winner so far is Cabela's, who have a Liberty 12-gun safe that as of the date of this post is on sale for $549, regular $749.

Hate to say it but 12 gun safe isn’t very big. And Won’t hold 12 especially if scoped
Crappy tire has safes like that as does Tsc stores

Costco does not sell them in store. Maybe online. Yeah. They are not very big these stack on ones. When they say 9. It’s 9 jammed in there. I’d say more like 4 or 5 max. You want to fit 10 I’d recommend getting much bigger.

Whatever you buy, just remember to cut the advertised capacity in half....ie a 24 gun safe only holds 12, and only half of those can have scopes !

The metal cabinet ones from Stack on are good for ammo. One of the members posted pictures showing him adding shelves to one.

Costco does have good quality gun safes at a reasonable price. Try after Christmas when all the Christmas decorations and toys are out of the store.

R u sure? I just asked my buddy who works there and he says no they don’t. At Costco

Old equipment is liquidated through Crown Assets. Also,don't forget Amazon. They have a complete line of different makes and models of gun safes.......and they deliver right to your door.

Just remember it is to the "DOOR". After that you need to move it inside and upstairs or down to the basement. Be ready.

Also, I found these guys, GTA Gun Auctions. Does anyone have any experience with them? The guy returned my email promptly and said they have a safe in their next auction. Very positive reviews on Google.

OP, I bought a Liberty Safe from Cabelas just over 18 months ago.

18 gun, holds about 10-12, but top quality build.

As the old saying goes, buy cheap a few times, or buy quality once.

Oh, and having a few friends available to assist with moving in to the house is key.

10,000 pound winch on the front of a pickup helps too. It weights more then you think and once it starts sliding down the stairs...well stuff is going to get broke, hopefully no one gets hurt.

I had three of us below, and one up top, mainly just to guide it...

I was at a auction this past summer had a Liberty 6’by 6’. Two door burgundy colour safe sold for $1150.00 plus tax. But it was in the house 6 steps front porch
That baby was heavy

Probably $6000+. New

My 2 cents are-any legal safe(TSC,Canadian Tire etc)is good for being legal.Any fancy safe costs a whole lot more with no real benefit.
Maybe harder to break into or drag it away............. but if someone wants to steal it,break into it-they will do it.
Now-for the price difference ,there are so many things in life to be spent on.................

For really expensive and fancy rifles i can see the"want"factor.

Now again,this is just my 2 cents.To each their own.

Actual "safes" like the liberty not only are extremely difficult to break into, but carry a fire rating for higher than most of the ULC Rated products in your house.

Sure, if a thief wanted to get my guns,he could round up 5 of his friends, a jackhammer to break the concrete slab my safe is lagged into from inside, and then horse it up the full flight of stairs and eventually out front to a waiting pickup truck, all while my neighbors, many of whom are retired watch closely....

Or they could just go alone with a crow bar and a 2lb ball been hammer to a house that bought the cheap Stack-On.....

I wonder how many guns that were nabbed in the High River fiasco were stored in proper safes?....:confused:

4 1/2" Grinder makes quick work of must safe walls. Once the steel side is open, even the cement breaks up easy.

Most times people do not install the safe correctly.

The door is the strongest part, but if you leave the weak sides and top exposed.

A standard stack on safe can be breached in about 15 seconds with 2 quick pops of a ram set. A good quality safe is going to take a heck of a lot longer.

There was an incident in Toronto a few years ago where the thieves spent a week breaking into a mans gun vault while he and family were vacationing.
A lot of guns were stolen and where were his neighbors??? they didn't know a thing till the owner returned, I believe HE was charged.
Thieves will get into anything and steal whatever and however they want.
They crash through buildings and steal ATM'S , so a vault , big and heavy just takes a little longer

If someone is willing to break into your house to steal your guns, that's what insurance is for. Don't see the value or need for a heavy expensive safe when I pay my insurance.

Yes...Toronto....where people go about their business, don't say hello to oncoming strangers on the sidewalk, and spend decades not knowing their neighbors....

My neighbors message me when a delivery van without a label pulls into the drive. ( I live in a subdivision well outside the city, and it's a dead end. The only traffic on our street is people who are supposed to be there. This was factored in when buying).

Of course, my point isn't that a safe isn't foolproof, or can't be defeated eventually. It's that a properly installed, rated safe is enough of a deterrent that a thug looking to score someones guns will likely seek more opportune targets.

If you want to stick your guns in a cheap Stack-On box, have at it, but the notion of any real deterrent is an illusion. ( Before I could afford it, I kept mine in them too).

my stack on is to meet the legal storage requirements not a threat deterrent. Once they are in my house they will get whatever they want anyway. Like said above that is what insurance is for. Having said that, I don't advertise that I have guns. I figure thieves looking for guns will go to the neighbours house with all the gun/hunting related stickers all over the back of his jacked up pickup. So dumb neighbours are good for some things.

Common tactic? Hang around outside gun clubs and ranges, and tail the individuals home....

Or just follow the guy with the Remington, Benelli, or Winchester stickers in the back window.

My safe has 4 legs and big teeth. Unless someone's willing to shoot my dog, I have zero worries of myguns being stolen...lol

if I recall correctly, the thieves had break through a concrete floor to get at the safe, and the safe was of very high quality. The cops laid charges for unsafe storage. This case really highlighted the anti-gun stance of the PD, city, and prosecutors office. In the end, common sense prevailed but not without causing the gun owner a ton of grief.

It amazes me that charges are even laid when the firearm owner is in 100% compliance with existing storage laws. In every instance, prevention of theft from B&E was never the reason nor the intention of safe storage regs since their inception. Nothing has changed.

There is a little more to the story than that and I know the victim of the theft. The break and enter took place in an apartment in a public housing complex rife with gang bangers and crime.The owner of the guns used the apartment as a storage place for numerous firearms in this high crime area. He had run a foul of the Chief Provincial Firearms Officer a number of times for alleged discrepancies while teaching firearms courses to potential armed security guards and to add fire to the flames had been an "expert firearms witness" for the DEFENCE in a number of high profile cases involving firearms,where the crown lost. I think you get the picture.....

I take my male dog to vets and the workers hide. I walk him in he sits on the scales they read scales then kick us out lol
Before another customer comes in
Female dog is always beating up on him they love the female
Male hates needles. And has a great memory of where he received last shot and he has we bit of attitude

Bass Pro in Vaughan has a bunch, about 20. A good safe & good price. I decided it's bigger than I need. Apparently the smaller ones tend to go on sale in January-February when they're clearing out old stock.

I picked one of these up on boxing day from Cabelas. Couldn't believe the lineup outside the store at 7:50 in the morning. Then to get in, and line up to fill out paperwork for the safe, then to go to another line to pay for the safe.

In any event this was a darn good deal. Bit of a PIA to move to the basement but my wife and I managed. I took the door off, and strapped it to a dolly and hooked it to the winch on my truck for safety if we couldn't hold it on the stairs. The safety precaution not needed as we slowly rolled it down without issue.

I will say - 24 guns my - I have 12 in it now and its jammed. It may take like 16 if none of them have scopes.

The reason I wanted the bigger safe was purely because I have young kids who will eventually have untrustworthy friends lol. I want to know I am the only one with access to the safe. The other two stack on's are holding ammo.

Yeah it's a good deal for sure. There were no lineups at Bass Pro for them. I had them set one aside for me but decided I didn't need one that big and that I should stay in my $300-400 budget. Hopefully I won't regret it lol.

Just giving this a bump. Still patiently on the lookout. Ideally a fire-rated safe for $300-400. I don't have a Costco membership but if anyone happens to see them there (or a good deal anywhere, new or used) please pm.

For another $250 I think you may regret not getting the 24 gun (which is really a 12 gun). I use one side for guns and the other for ammo & documents etc - nice to have the space, but they do take up a little more room, mine is stuffed in a closet and there’s not room for much else

You can improve storage in most gun safes with rifle rods. I made some with sticks from balloons and they work OK. If you follow Hickok45 on YouTube I believe he stores all his firearms in socks. This has the advantage of reducing damage if you have the rifles leaning up against each other.

Works great as long as humidity is controlled, and the firearms you are storing go in completely dry. Otherwise, as many a novice has discovered, storing blued steel firearms in a cloth sock, etc can have disastrous outcomes.

After several months of fairly consistent searching, nothing suitable came up used. Seems these puppies tend to stay put once they're purchased. I came close to buying the Cabela's/Liberty 24-gun safe on sale for $600 (half-off). Glad I didn't because I don't think I could have got it down my narrow stairs.

Seems this one is the best deal for my needs, Cabela's 10-gun safe by Liberty. $499 at Bass Pro. For some reason it's not on the Cabelas.ca website.

So the neighbour and I get it down the stairs and set it up and the lock doesn't work. Great. After reading the instructions line-by-line and trying multiple times, I call Liberty in Utah. Within 10 minutes she says she's going to find me a locksmith and have them replace the entire lock. It's nice to get actual customer service when you're expecting a battle.

Unless you have some high priced hardware just about any steel box will do. You want legal ? Trigger lock on your gun plus your front door lock meet that requirement. You want to keep the kids out of your stuff ? Any gun cabinet can provide that. Always lock up ammo separately so buy two cabinets.

Yup...my first 'safe' was an old school locker with a hasp on it that I found at the dump. Meet the legal requirements and kept them out of sight. Later I picked up a real 'safe' at Canadian Tire in the discount area for $60. Had a huge dent in the side. Pounded it out and put that side against the wall...

Yeah totally. This goes beyond legal. But I rent out my basement suite, and even though I've always had good tenants I can never be sure of who may visit. Also my house is often full of neighbourhood kids, no heavy safe required but I sleep better.

The locksmith came and replaced my internal lock with a new one. Great service. The one he replaced it with has mostly brass components, which is better quality than the pot-metal components of the original. Apparently brass is self-lubricating and will last longer. He also took time to properly lubricate the parts that require it. He said that electronic locks can be fairly easily hacked and have a life-span of about 10 years. A good mechanical lock will last 100 years. He definitely recommended bolting it to the floor.

For sure. There's always a way in, it's a matter of adding 2-minute hurtles to reduce the chances.

Yeah no roommates but his mom may visit. You can never tell about little old ladies these days. :)
