I'm not a big coyote chaser but a few are running too close to the barn so it's time now that the snow is showing where they are running.
I gave my rifle to my grandfather and i'll be using a shotgun with some slugs and #2 shot. I've also have a traditions muzzleloader.
anyone here ever use shotguns?
I called one in once to about 25yds, shot it with BB's.... dropped it right in it's tracks.... so it can be done.... keeping still and watching the wind is where it's at... :)
We use shotguns when they are in close. BBs or buckshot are the preferred loads.
I use #4 buck in my 16ga Blaser
#4 Buck within 25 yards with an I/C choke. I'm in Wellington too and there seems to be an upswing in them this year.
In October my bird dog, a small munsterlander, while grouse hunting, surprised a coyote in a drainage ditch. It was windy and we were downwind of it. The coyote ran out, then stopped at about 50 yards. It turned and started running back towards my dog. I had a clear shot at 35-40 yards. One shot with a 12 gauge 3" #4 shell (I know a heavy load for grouse but that's all I had that day) and the coyote dropped in its tracks. I checked the drainage ditch and the coyote had left a jack rabbit in front of its den in the ditch. I guess he didn't want to share his dinner that day.
I would use at least BB’s or larger, #4 buck would be my preferred shot size, pattern your gun/choke, with the right combo decent 40yds patterns can be achieved.

I use 3" #4 buck and 3" 00 buck out of my Browning Maxus, Kicks choke. I've shot them at 40+ yards and bang flop.
Got one this fall with 3.5" BB hevi shot at about 30 yards in the face. He was dead before I lowered the gun.
Old lead BB shot works great if you have some laying around, I'd use 000 buck too but I think #4 buck is the best coyote shot

I have never tried it, nor would I. There’s lots of conflicting information out there about that, but I was told by a gunsmith, not to use a turkey choke with buckshot. He recommended improved or modified. My worry would be a bulge in the barrel or at the very least, making choke removal difficult .Quote:

boom buddy. i plan to throw in some number twos for the walk in with a slug as my last shot, just in case i jump a bunny or a napping yote. at that point, when i sit down and shut up i can throw whatever is preferred. mod choke gives you the best options for just about any surprise :)
