Opinion piece on the Spring Bear hunt

Came across this opinion piece in the North Bay news today. Admittedly I did skim through the last portion of it after I felt the author started to jump to conclusions on what sort of precedent the reintroduction of a spring hunt could set, I did however find much of the article well written and supported. It appears the author is a hunter (maybe formerly) so the perspective doesn't seem to be from the same non-sense Torontonian with no concept of what a bear actually looks like.

I was wondering how others on this forum felt about the article and any of the evidence the author relies upon for his argument.

Good written article. My concerns are the timelines of the one study he used.

Hunt canceled 1999

Made specific note of nuisance bear study 2003

I seem to recall articles alot closer to the reintroduction in 2014 of a lot of human/bears encounters. Strictly going off memory ... was there an elderly couple in Sudbury, bears in New Market, etc.

Do you think its possible the population expanded to much higher levels with the cancelation of the spring hunt?

Also, trophy hunt or not. Lodges, guides, outfitters etc. Lost alot of revenue. Black bears and other big game animals can and should be managed as a resource, both environmentally and economically.

Just because I can go buy a steak at the grocery store and am not going hungry without bear meat doesn’t mean I don’t prefer bear meat and think it’s much more sustainable and healthy for my family

The fact that it’s a valid renewable resource should be good enough. No one is shooting sows with cubs and the population is healthy and stable so what is the issue?

Sustainable and Stable= Regulate and Harvest

Non Sustainable and /or Not stable = STOP harvesting until things change

This is just another anti-hunting op-ed piece full of half truths and outright lies. He claims he's a hunter and that he's not against hunting "per se" which makes no sense and what I find very "telling" about the entire piece. This article gets filed under "T" for trash.

It would be better for Bear hunting instructions through the OHEP classroom training module,especially after the turkey course has already been cancelled. Implementing one and cancelling the other makes no sense. Baiting has already been severely curtailed after the regulations restricted where and how bait stations can be built in proximity to roads,trails,tracks and distances to buildings being vastly increased. Lately,some amendments have been made. It remains to be seen if they're effective. "Spot and stalk" Bear hunting is becoming more popular in light of the bait station restrictions in the southern areas of the province where roads,trails and tracks are everywhere,but,it has it's draw backs when it comes to proper gender identification in the spring. Hunters must really be cognizant of the presence of tiny first-year cubs which are virtually invisible in dense foliage and tree tops. Inadvertent mistakes only serve to feed the anti-hunting rhetoric.
Adjustments to open season dates must only be done when accurate,verifiable science-based population data show downward numbers.

Funny, this sounds very close to the Animal rights group based out of london. Well they say they are stewards of the natural resources, they fudge the facts and spread out right lies. They say 60% of bears killed in the spring hunt are female, because the need to feed cubs drive mothers to bait when they would not normally use a bait site.

my first thought was "does this guy live in northern ontario?"
i can only speak of experience of only a few years up there. In sudbury, most of the people I ran into hunt or have family members who hunt regularly. The folks who hunted did not hunt for trophy. they hunted because they liked to shoot and they liked to eat.
Most folks who i lived near and worked alongside of were not afraid of guns or being out in the woods knowing that a hunter could be there, so the whole canoeist and outdoor enthusiast argument doesn't seem to hold water to me. Even when there wasn't a hunting season, you usually expected to see someone on crown land shooting clays or targets. it's just such a part of outdoor life and from what I gathered, just accepted as a fact of life and no big deal.

All in all it really feels like its a southern Ontario city dwellers argument looking to control what northern folks do when they have very little investment there.

What an utter crock of chit. From the header and through each paragraph it became more and more obvious what his agenda was. I really have my doubts if this twit was actually a hunter with the bs he assumes.

Like Fishhog said the bear population is plenty stable and healthy, no one shoots a sow with cubs so there are no issues at all.
Bear hunting does not need more regulation like you seem to think for some bizarre reason. Hey lets prohibit spot and stalk hunting up in blueberry country or logged areas up north.

With your suggestion about mis- identification of Moose being in the first few sentences I think your onto something here. Every year in my area WMU 60 there are scores of Moose shot by mistake Bulls, for Cows,yearlings for calf,s and so forth,so your onto something here.Because a poster on here is of the opinion that populations are stable does not make it a fact.If no one shot a sow with cubs you would not have lost the Spring bear hunt back when Premier Harris caved into the anti hunters? Harris surely did cave to the anti hunters back then. A sad day indeed. But it wasn't because anyone shot a sow with cubs. Losers is pretty harsh. If you don't want to go shoot a giraffe that is your choice, but not a piece of that meat isn't consumed, and the money it puts into the local african economy is essential to those people. Again if its a renewable resource and a stable population, in my mind there is no issues with it. I've never done it and probably never will, but I have no problem with those who do and they certainly are not losers.

The true "losers" are the people who put some kind of emotional hierarchy on an animal because they think they are pretty, cute or otherwise cool. Things like swans, bears or giraffe's in this case. Animals are animals. If there is a huntable population and people that chose to hunt them, there is no problem with that. The fact that you for whatever reason don't want to, doesn't make those who choose to do so "losers".

Badenoch, your take on the bear hunt is narrow minded at best. Most hunters that I took in were blue collar workers who saved for their hunt of a lifetime. All took their meat back home and they took just about the same amount as a fall hunter. The only difference between spring and fall was the lack of fat in a spring bear and the amount of weight a bear would put on during their normal feeding in the summer months.
And when you look at it what's the difference with a local hunting deer from a treestand, a duck hunter shooting over dekes or calling in a Turkey or moose and pop them from close range.

It's laughable to suggest giraffe meat is "essential" to the local african economy. It's not in great demand when there are more delectable meats available.

My SA and Nam pals are happy to take your money so you can live out a "mighty great white hunter" fantasy by blasting a large, cumbersome animal that is docile, easy to find and not particularly wary.

Might want to read more clearly. I did not say the meat was essential. I said the money was and that the meat isn’t wasted.

Love giraffes all you want but the fact is if the population can support it and people want to hunt there is no reason not to.

I feel the same about hunting a giraffe it would not be a animal I would pursue especially being in Africa with such a wild variety of game killing one is not a challenge and I believe many hunters probably feel the same way.

Many could say the same about moose or moose calves, they are not timid, easy to shoot and pose no real challenge to hunt once located. To each their own if your legally hunting with a license than why does it matter what game is chosen?

Well locating Moose is the challenge as you have pointed out,I personally have no desire to hunt a giraffe and hunters dropping such a majestic animal only add to the ranks of anti hunters IMHO.

So locating a giraffe in blistering heat on foot would not be a challenge? Prolly more of a challenge than looking over a swamp and calling in a moose in 10c temps. Shooting a calf wouldn't add to the ranks of anti-hunters? Or how about shooting a fawn whitetail that's the size of a dog and less than a year old?

Name one animal that is hunted that someone doesn’t think is their favourite and shouldn’t be hunted. If we follow your logic we wouldn’t hunt anything

The one off lion was beat to death and since it was a one off not worth talking about

I firmly believe there is nothing wrong with harvesting a renewable resource if the population can support it. Whether that be a trapper taking a muskrat or someone taking an elephant or giraffe. There is no difference other than to the people who want to have regulations based on emotions

And again if that was the case there would be no hunting fishing or trapping. So be careful what you wish for

The perception with the general public is that a giraffe is not a game animal,is found only on one continent and the meat is not considered game meat. Having not hunted in Africa,I do not know if they walk on foot in blistering heat or if the animal is spotted from the air,tracked with 4x,s
and then some overweight hunter from Texas who cannot walk 5 yards gets out of the truck and kills the giraffe,do you? Taking a fawn the size of a dog and less than a year old does upset anti hunters,what is your point.

Most hunting in Africa, and every part of the world is done on foot. As is done when hunting any game, scouting is done for habitat and sign. Animals are tracked and approached on foot.

Note the date on this article and the number of complaints to date, keeping in mind that the number of nuisance complaints before the spring bear hunt cancellation was around 500 calls per year. The last numbers I saw on complaints were over 20+ thousand a year around the time of the reintroduction.
The Ministry's excuse was horseshyte then and still is now. The media report it without question and that allows people to put hunters in their nice little box so they can character assassinate us. Kind of like the above posts.

My issue is when others think that because they wouldn't kill one species that nobody should. That is a very slippery slope. I'm 99.999% sure I will never kill a giraffe, but I sure don't begrudge someone who does if they do so following the game laws of that country.

My issue is when others think that because they wouldn't kill one species that nobody should. That is a very slippery slope. I'm 99.999% sure I will never kill a giraffe, but I sure don't begrudge someone who does if they do so following the game laws of that country.

if you think the current moose issue was caused by hunters following the game laws you need to do some more research. There are many factors going on that caused much more impact than hunters following game laws did. And as much as I wish the gov't was a little faster adjusting those game laws at least they finally did. However even if the season had been closed 5 years ago the moose in many areas would still be struggling.

As long as you get what I was saying were are good.I was going to use the demise of the carrier pigeon or buffalo as examples but back then we had very little game laws so another bad example.But we can have some pretty bad results when we self regulate.

Usually the hunters are taken out in a bakkie (4-wheeler) and driven around. Giraffes aren't hard to see and not particularly wary. It's pretty clear you've not set foot in the places I've been and I suspect the closest you've been to Africa is reading Hemingway. Villagers don't need Mighty White Bwana to get meat. They do like the money because it helps them pay their iPhone bills. Giraffe meat not so much.

What I was doing in Africa was helping advance resource projects contributing to the African economy so that people there didn't have to rely on douchebags from North America who think it's cool to shoot giraffes.

I haven't been on a spring bear hunt or hunted giraffe. There isn't much sport in popping a bear with its head stuffed into a barrel of donuts or driving up to a giraffe and shooting it as it stares at you.

I'd have to agree that the article certainly appears to be written by someone living in the Southern regions of the province as he shares much of the anecdotal (and empirically false) evidence I have heard from other folks living in the urban south (although certainly I have met many who understand these issues for what they really are).

Although there is much I disagree with when it comes to the Ford government, it seems to me that the MNRF has developed somewhat of a backbone to stand behind scientific data since the conservatives took power. Evidence of this was this move to reinstate the spring bear hunt, while simultaneously taking an indepth look at the failing bear population of the Bruce Peninsula and what could be done there (including limiting hunting opportunities) to fix that. A government that is willing to look both hunters and anti-hunters in the eye and state a path forward that is in the best interests of our resources and not the special interests of either group is at the very least, making one right decision.

Thing is nobody gives a rat's arse if you don't think giraffes should be shot. If someone wants to do it that's their business. If Gilroy doesn't want to that's his business. And if you actually knew as much as you seem to think you would realize that giraffe hunting is used to control populations to proper levels, same as with most other game animals in Africa. Hunting has always, and still provides much needed financial dividends to the economy that can never be replaced by . Do you realize the damage that runaway populations of giraffe can cause to vegetation to the point of killing smaller trees by stripping them of leaves.

Question for you Badenoch. Have you actually hunted for anything in Africa? From what you say you seem to have plenty of PH "pals" in two countries. Not sure why they would relate to your line of work out there, or were they just some local bar room guys you met maybe?

To add to what smitty 55 said about Giraffe's , some are culled , the aggressive older males that kill the younger ones, this also goes for a lot of the other animals that are hunted in Africa and for this opportunity the hunters still pay a large dollar for the license as a friend of ours has on several occasions.

I am sure you would be opposed to the idea of guides taking hunters out on a walk to shoot grouse. Not that they need a guide to hunt grouse in ontario, but it sure helps break the ice, and allows a guide to get a good reading on a guest.

The reinstatement of a province wide spring bear hunt will have many benefits. So as long as the MNRF and the Government continue to make decisions based on fact and not emotional insanity we can have a bright future.

Your giraffe hunt is no different than a guided moose hunt with an outfitter here. Have your guide drive hunters along logging roads, moose are not hard to see in clear cuts and not particularly wary. Step out of vehical or ATV and just off the road, so in your words the goof who thinks he's a mighty white hunter shoots his moose from a couple hundred yds and back to the lodge for drinks. Its business just like African hunt, easy money. If you want your guide to earn his money go on a mountain hunt for elk or sheep or some other animal that takes some effort.

We all know who they are and new members will quickly pick up on them,too,because they aren't stupid people,either,right? When they start their nonsense on their posts,simply don't engage. Interesting that you say that because I was thinking the same thing. I suspect that Welsh might be engaged in helping the government on some gun legislation,but that is purely speculation on my behalf.

Yeh they would love it if they could bully,cajole,intimidate others members on here to see things there way.They have been trying with me since even before 2008 on the old website. Still here, still giving my opinion,still posting with a large number of people reading and replying to threads.

A very nicely written article and I to have found that the Minister of Natural Resources has been great.

I took the opportunity after this fall hunt to send a letter of commendation to my local CO on the great job she was doing as a new CO.
Ministers office replied and send the letter forward to her boss in Bancroft.They are trying hard with the new Moose hunting laws and even although I find the fee and choice structure a little complicated I like the point system.

If the previous Conservative Government under Mike Harris "had the backbone to stand behind scientific data" the Spring bear hunt would never had been cancelled in the first place.I believe the MNR threatened to sue their own government back in the day?

In any event I hoped in this nicely written post you would have mentioned it was the previous Liberal Government who got the ball rolling on the re reinstatement of the Spring bear hunt.But all the same good thread,contributions by many and the usual one line trolling by some.

21,353 posts for you Mike some would say that you are trolling for attention.Just Sayin.

Only 3 of your 475 threads have ever been shut down and I posted on many of them,your numbers do not add up.

Of the three shut down I was not the cause,the posters are all there at the end of the threads.

Well as I said in my member introduction this is a great site with many great members other than a few liberals and we know who they are. This again is a outdoors site and who is any one here to judge what another hunter does or how he hunts as long as they follow the law.
