Yesterday someone told me Costco from Guelph ran out of Toilet paper,since ppl are stockpiling it ,to get prepared.
I found it interesting,so when i went to do business in Wall Mart-checked out the toilet papers.
Lo and behold-3/4 of the huge shelf was empty there .
Not sure if it was just a coincidence,but it is interesting........thoughts?
ps-of course i bought some too....:silly:

Never know just how it's going to play out. But laundry soap to wash your close are missed by many lol. .
We found a sweet deal on shampoo and conditioners amongst other hair products. Was in a clearance bit at our local independent.
Grabbed about 140 bucks in products for around 15 bucks. They was a 2 carts full of products on clearance for 94 cents each lol. It's not first we a have stocked pilled soaps and shampoos living with a bunch of women and girls it a necessity [emoji1787][emoji106].
As for toilet paper we always by bulk we only buy on sale we a frugal and like good deals. Its something you always need so why only buy 1 or 2 packs of it. We probably have a good 2 to 3oo rolls on hand. I would hate to pay so much on something we need as an every day essentials. Spending the 40 or 50 bucks on it when it's on sale will save you more than you spent[emoji106].
I'm thinking since its suck a hot thing right now they won't be putting good deals on them. You know how it works supply and demand why put something on sale when it's going to fly off the shelves at full price [emoji54].
We are totally prepared from soups to rice canned veggies ,soaps ,propane to animals food. . Only down fall is I will still have to work [emoji1787][emoji39]. Just glad I dont work in the city anymore I did when sars hit. I can still keep my distance from people and just do what I have to do if it gets bad enough.
Just dont be buying things that go bad or you will eventually toss in the garbage. Get things you will use.

There is panic buying and this will only get worse as more cases are revealed. Locally, pharmacies are running out of hand sanitizer and masks. About the only thing people aren’t buying is overseas travel!
With over 100,000 cases worldwide, it’s really a matter of time before it spreads more into North America.

Apparently the stock pilling and panic shopping is going to hurt the less fortunate, who have there shopping days on certain days of the month. Empty shelves will leave them with not much left when they have the opportunity to shop.

Cant help but think this virus is just natural population control that humans just cant contain. I mean there is already two stains of Corona, Who's to say it doesnt mutate again, Making it immune to antidote.
Every other living life form on this planet has some sort of population control, Either disease, climate, predation etc. Dont think we have evolved above that.

Toilet paper was luxury.It came into play only when indoor toilets were the next thing............it was needed for obvious reasons.
I happened to go once to a guys house-with the only toilet being an outhouse..........in mid 80's!!! He was using a corn cob.:whacked:It was hanging on a string in the outhouse.

Well I've been out an about today most of the sale toilet paper sales are gone and bare shelves of other brands at different locations lol.
Hand sanitizer is non existent down to alcohol to make your own. Lol. .
Its getting real out there with cases now jumping faster.

OK but really, this is absurd. We could only find 12 rolls of toilet paper at a pharmacy for $30!!! That is crazy!
How in the world did everyone get hung up on toilet paper ... it's like someone said ... Oh my ... we gonna die ... we need ... TOILET PAPER!!!!!! And the masses went nuts.
I can find water easy, non-perishable food items, medical supplies (to treat symptoms), hygiene products, and even alternatives to hand sanitizer (alcohol, etc) ... no problem ... those are the things you really need ... but Toilet Paper?? Come on... if you have to wipe your crack with a cloth and wash the cloth after ... so be it!
One lady apparently went to Costco and bought an entire skid of toilet paper ... an entire skid! She's gonna starve to death before she craps enough to use all that toilet paper! And if she doesn't eat, I'm sorry to say ... she ain't going to be using much of that toilet paper.
Humanity HAS gone mad ... 100% sure of it now.

I have to scratch my head at those who think this is no big deal. It has already affected global stock markets. Mass closures have very real effects on people who need to work. Something as bizzare as toilet paper hoarding emphasize how this is already affecting the supply chains that keep grocery stores open. We live in a modern and wealthy part of the world but our healthcare infrastructure is borderline already. Yeah sure, the flu is worse. Right.
The original question asked by the OP is why I started keeping 30 days food after the Ice Storm of 98. In the last 3 yrs I have completed the year long food plan. I have received lots of ribbing along the from close family and friends and lots "talk" from the wife about space requirements. In the last 3 weeks, I have watched all those naysayers panic and stock up and I get it. For the last 2 weeks and particular the 36hrs minor/mass panic has set in here in Ottawa. My son is cashier at Loblaws and I picked him up at 6:30 PM last. The lines went right to the back of the store both sides, Cyrville Costco had no meat, TP, rice, beans ect, ect and line ups to back of store. The same with Freshco, Food Basic and Independent, toilet paper is a premium to be found (10 Empty pallets at front of Loblaws, every cart full - overfull of food.
The whole idea of prepping is like insurance, we have it for cars, life and home, yet we don't "food" insurance security. Yes, I have 6 months of Tp and 3600 Costco baby wipes, 1 yrs worth of food (2500 calories X 4 pers). But what I am not doing is panic buying, waiting in line, fighting over, going from store to store.
The concept of preparedness is to avoid that what is going on right now. Can I lock my doors with family behind them and emerge 60 days later healthy, yes. DO I need to..no not yet.
Being prepared is a piece of mind issue, I am not worried about food security, ability to make power via geny, solar, having 3 ways to cook Propane, Butane, Sterno and even tea light candles if needed, Pool shock pucks along with water purification tabs, I sleep just fine.
When there was a big sale on about 3 weeks ago I got in trouble with my wife for buying 4 of the Charmin Double roll 12 packs, she has the view that we should shop for groceries weekly or more and need nothing more in the house, if I have more than 2 cans of soup etc. I am hoarding .... so here's your chance.
I will trade 2 unopened packs of Charmin Soft .... the Double roll ones.... even trade on any in good condition Browning, Henry, Blaser or IWI etc. (I will have to consider others) I repeat TWO UNOPENED 12 PACKS.....ULTRA SOFT.... I mean no one is hoarding firearms (or atleast it isn't in the news) so this is your chance to invest at the bottom.....

That is something that I/We don't understand as we , my wife and I came from different backgrounds, but there was always food in the house. That is how we still live and our daughter now a grown woman lives that way also.
Line ups were crazy in sutton we thought we would head into town see what's up and check some ice out at the access points. No frills parking lot had cars parked in and around the back. We headed over to sobeys maybe get a scratch tickets and what ever. Parking was like newmarket Costco. We walked around and left to check the ice. The line up was brutal saw a friend when I was leaving and told him if he didmt need anything important to get it at the gas station lol. No way would I stand in those lines.
The good news is I will be fishing tomorrow [emoji1787][emoji1787]. Mostly all the huts have been removed from the lake already. At least it wont be busy out there.

Most people on this site, I think live in homes. If you live in an apartment with no pantry or place to store extra food except in the kitchen cupboards, you would have no 'stockpile', usually.
My family is Italian, and we ALWAYS stock up ... I think maybe it just comes from habit making our own food every fall ... tomato sauce, sausages, wine, etc. You're just accustomed to having a cold cellar or storage area for all that stuff that lasts throughout the year. You aren't going to make a batch of stuff for only 1 month, you do it once for the whole year. The other thing is ... you see a deal on something, we grab 5 or 10 of it. Normally when we go shopping, we get the short term stuff we need (normally stuff that goes bad quick, so you can't store ... like vegatables or milk), but the rest of the stuff like meat that can be frozen, or cleaning stuff ... normally we get that when we see a deal and just stock up ... sometimes I see a deal, and I already may have 2 or 3 at home ... we still buy it and replenish the stock. Saves a lot of money, yes, but more so ... it saves time. We don't have to go to the grocery store ever ... we go when we want to go, and fewer times per month.Quote:

We tend to buy alot 3 or 4 trips to a grocery stores are nothing in a week. This is mainly for fresh produce and meats or dinners . The good sales and daily basis things there is never a shortage of . We get alot of things on sale and pile up when we can. We never pay more than 5 bucks for a 12 pack of the good toilet paper. Laundry soap to soap and shampoos . They are a daily use why pay full price ?. If you dont stock up while the good sales are on you wont be getting the best price and you spend more.
That being said we got 3 additional packs of crap paper 499 cashmere plus 2 bucks back on pc points for each pack that's 6 bucks back and less than 15 bucks for 3 12 packs. Good deal we were nice and left other paper we are not greedy if it was no shortage I would of definitely got more as the was plenty .
a bag of rice a bag of flour , the flour we were just about out anyway. A few additional freezer items 6 more cans of soup 3 cans of milk for when the cream runs out lol. 2 extra cases of water and that's it lol. Oh my wife ordered coffee and powder cream I think last night online lol. Who needs to wait in these long lines when you can shop online and have delivery in 2 days [emoji54][emoji106].
We are not hoarders we are smart shoppers saving money.
Unfortunately many are not,either they cant afford to do it or other things are more priority are more important. You have to have the funds available to smart shop not everyone will spend 30 40 or 100 bucks on a certain product a few times a year.

Around 2 weeks ago I realized that I was in denial about this virus and the situation in general for no good reason. It's so un-scary to us that we don't even try very hard to protect ourselves from it. It's not "newsworthy".
Sure, we've all probably had a coronavirus of some form or another, but this particular one is new... "novel". It's a relative unknown to us, none of us are immune to it, and most of us are going to get it. Most of us will be fine, but some of us will die. I don't know about the rest of you, but if someone told me that out of 100 of us in a room, 3 or 4 of us aren't walking out, I wouldn't be too comfortable with those odds.
The media hype is both addictive and deafening. Maybe the virus isn't as deadly as advertised, maybe it is. The worldwide panic, the stockmarket free fall and the potential for a societal breakdown are very real, and we all should be concerned and aware. I'm not suggesting we join in the panic, I'm suggesting that everyone use their heads. What is there to gain by sitting in denial until you realize you might have been wrong?
This might be one of my craziest posts, but if that's the worst of it, I can live with that.

Seasonal flu is an “all human virus”. The DNA/RNA chains that make up the virus are recognized by the human immune system. This means that your body has some immunity to it before it comes around each year... you get immunity two ways...through exposure to a virus, or by getting a flu shot.
Novel viruses, come from animals.... the WHO tracks novel viruses in animals, (sometimes for years watching for mutations). Usually these viruses only transfer from animal to animal (pigs in the case of H1N1) (birds in the case of the Spanish flu). But once, one of these animal viruses mutates, and starts to transfer from animals to humans... then it’s a problem, Why? Because we have no natural or acquired immunity.. the RNA sequencing of the genes inside the virus isn’t human, and the human immune system doesn’t recognize it so, we can’t fight it off. Now.... sometimes, the mutation only allows transfer from animal to human, for years it’s only transmission is from an infected animal to a human before it finally mutates so that it can now transfer human to human... once that happens..we have a new contagion phase. And depending on the fashion of this new mutation, thats what decides how contagious, or how deadly it’s gonna be..
H1N1 was deadly....but it did not mutate in a way that was as deadly as the Spanish flu. It’s RNA was slower to mutate and it attacked its host differently, too.
Fast forward.
Now, here comes this Coronavirus... it existed in animals only, for nobody knows how long...but one day, at an animal market, in Wuhan China, in December 2019, it mutated and made the jump from animal to people. At first, only animals could give it to a person... But here is the scary part.... in just TWO WEEKS it mutated again and gained the ability to jump from human to human. Scientists call this quick ability, “slippery”
This Coronavirus, not being in any form a “human” virus (whereas we would all have some natural or acquired immunity). Took off like a rocket. And this was because, humans have no known immunity...doctors have no known medicines for it. And it just so happens that this particular mutated animal virus, changed itself in such a way the way that it causes great damage to human lungs..
That’s why Coronavirus is different from seasonal flu, or H1N1 or any other type of influenza.... this one is slippery AF. And it’s a lung eater...And, it’s already mutated AGAIN, so that we now have two strains to deal with, strain s, and strain L....which makes it twice as hard to develop a vaccine.We really have no tools in our shed, with this. History has shown that fast and immediate closings of public places has helped in the past pandemics. Philadelphia and Baltimore were reluctant to close events in 1918 and they were the hardest hit in the US during the Spanish Flu.

Look at Russia's numbers (not a warm country but similar climate to us so should be similar infection rate if climate is key). Country of 145 million with most of their population in large cities in or close to eastern Europe. Not chance they only have 145 cases. Finland with 5 million people on their border has more than twice that number reported. Russian health care is probably doing next to no testing and than Putin is probably making them lie on top of that.Quote:

The cases and deaths in North America is going to rise huge and fast in the next days/weeks. Many are still out and about doing there normal routine, many still down south soaking up sun yet to return. Flights have been returning with cases onboard.
