Good Morning,
I wont be able to conduct the annual camp I do each fall as we bought a house in Oxford Mills and I have so much work to do, that pretty much every weekend from now to Mid Oct is booked up.
I will start again next year. For those who have attended the Camp and want to take others out please do so.- please step up and offer to take out our new hunters.
Again my apologies.
congratulations on the new house, but also sorry to hear there will be no camps this year. Karen has been working out to get her draw weight up to 40 pounds just so she could hunt deer at camp..
I wouldnt mind meeting some new folks this year. I mostly go out alone and its always nice to have company especially for waterfowl season where having a buddy on the water is nice.
I'm newer to the Ottawa area, out in Smiths Falls and wouldn't mind hookin up with a few people for a hunt this fall

IF my son and I go out there I will post before hand. He's now legal to use his own gun we don't have to share anymore turned 15 in July

I am going to do my best to get out opening morning rain or shine. But will not be staying nights or have any of the normal set up.
I'd love to see the video of birds landing in your pool. Can I find it on youTube somewhere? I bought some new gear since last year also. I picked up 12 mallards and 6 blue teals that I will be bringing. I am hoping to get there early enough to set them up on the Friday (not sure...) I was also thinking of trying to rig a few up for motion. We'll see how motivated I get... I did just blast 4 boxes of steel shells up on clays this past weekend to break-in a new Italian tool I picked up :)Quote:

How available are you, I am going out again this weekend for a morning or evening hunt for geese. You just have to be ready with an hours notice to meet up. Here is my cell 613-863-5483 the place where I hunt is near Roger Stevens and Dwyer Hill rd, crossroads. Make sure you have a Migratory Game permit, Ontario small game license, PAL. Depending on how long you have been in Ontario, you might have residence problem getting a small game/Ontario hunting card.Quote:

Opener morning I will be there, with two canoes. Might camp the night as well on Friday. I just really cant commit fully on anything right now, as so much work and contractors scheduled on property. I do know evening are free and AM, but during day is very busy right now.
I still have not from the Steel bldg. delivery people yet, and the pad form work is moving ahead. 20 tons of gravel coming, 10 yards of topsoil, the brush hogging was completed last night and clean up begins tonight..lost 14lbs in last 3 weeks, best exercise ever, and sleeping like a baby..lol

WARNING - The water is the highest I have ever seen, and I had a difficult time punching into weed beds to pull up canoe. The edges around the beds are 2ft of water and 3ft of muck (no paddle stable stability while moving forward in canoes). So lots of stability issues getting up on weed beds. For me this is not much an issue as I am very used to this method. (the two I took out had challenges)
However, if you new to this method, it can be quite daunting to do the first time. Once up on the beds, you can usually step out (once testing with paddle - safe spots to step and bear weight), It took several tries to find a safe spot to step out. Also, any place I was able to step (temporarily), started to sink right away.
For those going, I just want you to be aware and start thinking about this in the rush to get situated before first light. You dont want to start the day wet.
Lastly, these reed beds have about 8 (single foot) of boots somewhere on the bottom of pond. If your boot goes through, you never get that boot back again...

I added to the wood pile. I was able to score a popup shelter but I still haven't found a canoe yet. Prices are crazy this year and they are selling within a couple of hours. I'm going to watch it very closely and hope I can get one in the next couple of days.
I saw a deer, a couple of goose hunters setting up for last night, a guy scouting with his dog right behind the camp, on the other side of the damn opening, a small game hunter (empty game bag...)
It was an awesome day to be in the woods and a good reminder that I really need to change my Honda Accord for a truck... I will be bringing a spade to do road repairs next weekend...

Got me a canoe. Tried it last night with my 8 year old. She floats and doesn't take in water :) Found the ducks! They are all in the city of Ottawa. Not scared of people there at all. You could pretty much paddle up to them and smack'em with your oar. Couldn't figure out how to tie the canoe to the SUV so I'll have to try that again tonight. So unless somebody in my house tests positive for covid in the next 36 hrs looks like I'm a go for tomorrow night / Saturday morning duck hunt.

Buy tie down straps to tie your canoe much much easier. Get a pack of 4. Use one across the back , one across the front, one down the front if possible. If one down the front is not possible put 2 across the front.

It does. With two cross bars. But I've always tied the nose of the canoe to the front corners of the vehicle. Do you think I can skip this?
I'm also in Ottawa and cannot wait for opener. If anyone is ever looking for an extra person I have an aluminum grumman, 5 avian-x mallard decoys, 12 goose silhouettes, 6 goose shells and a mallard mojo to contribute to the spread. I'm new to hunting (2nd year) but I am a very experienced outdoorsman and amateur naturalist.
I find Marlborough is a tough place to hunt. Went grouse hunting there 5 times last year and didn't get one shot off. Nice and close place to go for a walk in the woods though. Does anyone know if there is a discharge setback for where the Rideau trail goes through? I have never hunted waterfowl there before but it certainly looks like great wood duck habitat.
With regards to the canoe, could always strap it to a trailer as well if it can't go on top.

Went 5 times, I think I probably saw 3 birds, no rabbits and no turkeys. Saw a huge buck and a big doe as well, I don't hunt deer but it was during bow season.Quote:

So did anyone get out hunting Today (Saturday)? My son and I were out building our tree blinds. The frame and floors are done for both all that's left are the railings, rope to pull the gun up and his ladder. Should finish tomorrow. Will try and do some duck hunting around my place if the water level is right in the river and maybe go out next week to Marlborough next week. Have to finish these blinds first.

So I went out opening morning only...Not a soul in camp or on the ponds we hunt. All around me 4-5 minutes before legal shooting time, people started shooting. I sat there patiently waiting for alarm to go off before loading up. By that time 90% of the flights had flown out...

I do recall my first time duck hunting in NB when I was 17 years old. I was using my Baikal 20 gauge single shot, the first gun I bought when I turned 16.
Anyways it was extremely foggy that morning and people were not only shooting before legal time I still could not see my hand in front of my face. I have no idea what these people were shooting at.

Well I was out at Marlborough forest today off Paden road looking for grouse and rabbits didn't see anything. Took a drive down Heapy Road to see if anyone was camping and duck hunting but nobody was there. Someone must have shot a few geese as I saw a lot of feathers in a pile.
