So I have a couple of percolators for making coffee over the camp fire. Over the years I’ve noticed that the grounds still manage to get into the brew even with the mesh cover on. Does anyone have any tricks or tips on keeping the grounds out? I like drinking my coffee, not chewing it. Lol.

I had the same problem and found the only way to cut down (you'll never be 100% free of grounds) is to keep the perc from getting too hot. The trick is to get a gentle perc going as opposed to a full "blow the lid off" boil. The aroma of fresh-brewed coffee has to be one of life's greatest little pleasures. Good luck
An old trick is to add some cold water after the coffee has brewed. This helps settle the grounds. Another option is to get a large French press. You add boiling water to the coffee, stir it then let it sit for 5 minutes before pushing down the plunger.
Just bring up a regular coffee pot and plug it into the generator... Or does the coffee taste different when done over an open fire, I forget....
I use coffee filters just cut them down to size the top 2inches off still get a few grinds
I second turning the gas/heat down when the boil is about to start, it also keeps the coffee from getting a burnt flavor. As long as you leave the coffee for 1 or 2 minutes after perking the grounds will settle, just gotta be a bit careful pouring the last cup.

Yup what others have said already, Don't let it perk too hard. Slow low heat to get it perking, Not boiling the lid off as it will stir up the grounds.
I don't care what anyone says, I'm NOT using an electric coffee maker at the hunt camp, It just not the same, Perked coffee tastes the best too and a bit of grounds in your teeth is part of hunting season LOL

Seems most coffee you buy nowadays is designed for those drip coffee things that most everyone has. Its much finer than the older ground coffee we used to buy. So now we do the same as 3030 does. Cut coffee filters to fit the percolator and that reduces the grounds considerably. Either that or grind your own before you leave for the hunt.
Sorry guys...Tea is the true bush drink. You can make a tea out just about anything..but Labrador tea is great..
But if you MUST have your coffee. A few dried Labrador tea leaves in the pot will improve the taste..

Have you considered using a Moka pot? It makes really good coffee and I have never noticed any grinds in the coffee. If you don't like your coffee strong, you won't like the Moka pot though.

Great ideas and options, I’m going to try a few at home over the fire pit and see how it turns out. I also thought it might be useful to add a fine mesh to the spout. I’ve got a few pots I might just tinker with some design changes. There’s nothing worse than getting that one cup that gets all the grounds.
A little splash 'o' whiskey in the cup will settle all the grounds. You can thank me later....:thumbup:
Go find a fine meshed kitchen strainer( the scoop sized ones) and strain the grounds out as you pour. If they still get thru, a piece of cheese cloth should do the trick.Quote:

I would recommend David's tea Infuser.They have one cup size custom made stainless steel strainers,to put in the cup.Place it in your cup,pour the coffee,move it to the next guy.

If You drop by i can give You one for free.I got 3-4 (wife and daughter were once hooked to their tea).Which mostly was not even a tea but a mixture of sweet ingredients. Maybe not the cup size but a cetle size,but would work.
I hate the thing-green tea leaves do not fall out readily,pain to clean them out,wife gave up on their tea-novelty wore off,and daughter moved out.
However i can see coffee grounds easily falling out from the thing.Let me know.

Thanks, but we got a pot sized one that takes the leafs in a central metal cup. You can start with four large scoops of loose Earl grey and just add water as you go. Pull out the cup, then just swing the cup at the bush and all the leaves come flying out..Quote:

I tried cutting a coffee filter and placing it in the basket where the grounds go but still ended up with a bit of grounds at the end. Not many which was nice. Controlling the boil will be the ticket I think. Just need to get it to a slow simmer.

I put a paper towel in the basket, load the grounds, and fold the paper towel over. Put the metal filter atop that as per usual. Keeps the vast majority of the grounds out.
I'm actually surprised by the number of guys here who still perk coffee. It's almost a dying art.
Yup like others have said, dont let it get to rolling boil, just simmer. Next, I let sit for 5 minutes after I take off fire/stove, it helps to settle the grounds. Lastly, since I tend to make 20 cup pot at a time, I make that pot the night before and just reheat in the morning, saves time for those early morning duck/deer hunts.
We have 3 on the go every morning at camp. The main trick is to just let it roll slowly. Obviously with full rolling boil, the basket gets over filled with water and spills over.
I have no idea what the guys do at our camp, I think it's just instant. I'm rarely still in the camp by the time they haul their lazy butts out of the fart sack..HaHa.Quote:

Many years ago at a yard sale,I found an old South Bend 30 cup perc that the lady seller had no idea if it still worked. I paid $2 for it,took it home,plugged it in and it worked. So last summer I found myself living from a campsite for a few weeks (work related), the nearest Tim's was a 40 minute round trip so I bought myself a cheap percolator from Wally world and hooked it up to an inverter on the truck. I got a 3000w eliminator from crappy on sale for like $200 and I ran that thing all summer no problem. It's a bit of investment up front for coffee but you'd be surprised what you use the inverter for. I wired it with booster clamps so I'd sit the coffee machine on the rad cover with the hood open and let her go.
This year because of covid we’ll have to make coffee usually someone heads off to get everyone a coffee.
I’m the only one of the group that drinks it black. Two of the guys are half cream yes better be cream not milk two use so much sugar it give elephant a high other one will use powder creamer.
And looks like no place to go out sit down for dinner at night. I can hear the cry’s and see the tears already

I did the same thing. Got the Inverter on the end of jumper cables, but we use it to run the pole saw. We use the pole saw to cut off branches high on the tree to collect dry wood or clear branches hanging down and blocking trail/road.Quote:
