Good shooting, how's the new puppy fitting in?
Was out in the French river area last Saturday and bumped 3 woodcock. Bush was kind of dry in the spots I usually get them. Couldn’t connect with the amount of cover. Even with the few frosts, I don’t think the migration is in full swing yet, maybe a week or 2.
Zero for us in both Hullett and Conestoga. Hoping for some in the upcoming weeks.
I was out near Stratford today and managed to locate one for the pup. Collected a bonus grouse too! Both were firsts for the young one. I agree they aren't down here yet.

Nice hunt Lorenzo and Dilly looks like the pup is coming along nicely. I think with this cooler weather the woodcock migration should start soon. I am thinking next week we should start seeing more birds start showing up.
moved about 12 woodcock & 4 grouse in the Kawartha's in 3 hours. Got 4 woodcock & 1 grouse. Bush was thick with leaves....tough shooting.
0 for 2 at hullet today. i need a wingman lol! dogs did great. They ran hard for 3 hours which surprised me since I have done very little conditioning this summer.
Saw just one woodcock today north of Barrie ... it’s still flying.

Went to Hullett today for pheasant and moved two woodcock unexpectedly. Managed to get a shot at the second bird. Was pretty big actually.

Put up 1 today around Sarnia. Working with the dog no gun. Must've been a local.

Great pictures
2.5 hours this morning north of Barrie. 5 WC and 2 grouse flushed. 2 WC in the bag. All lone birds, widely spaced.
Hunted 3hrs today just north of Barrie. Moved 8 WC but only 2 in the bag ... have to say my shooting was a bit off today, but still a great day. I think some birds are starting to move, not any huge flights , but I think they are starting to trickle through.

You guys using 20 g for woodcock?

Yup, I use my 20 gauge over under for the most part for woodcock and grouse.

28 ga for me
I have used the 20ga for woodcock hunting for years and it works great. Lately I have been using a 28ga with excellent results.Quote:

What's a good grouse and woodcock load in 28 gauge ?
Thanks J
For grouse and woodcock with the 28ga its hard to beat the standard 3/4oz of 7.5’s. I reload my own but buy and use the Winchester AA for the hulls, they are fantastic on grouse and woodcock.
Hunted northbay area the last 2 days. Moved 6 on thursday and 14 yesterday. Hunted around 6 miles each day. Lots of grouse around. Locals were talking about big snow storm coming this weekend. Im expecting woodcock will be moving in to local spots soon.
Thanks for the above report. Cant wait.
I hunted just north of London this morning. No woodcock contacts yet but did connect on a grouse. Thinking they should start showing up around here mid week.
Was out today just north of Barrie for a couple of hours and saw just one woodcock. Hopefully some good flights move in soon.

moved 9-10 birds around Newmarket today in may be 1 hour, this is the week! time to call in sick (I wish).
Shot a limit of woodcock today! Put up approximately 20-25 birds north of Barrie in a 3.5hour hunt. Get out there folks, this is the week, good numbers of birds out there.
On a side note, I can’t seem to post pics anymore from my iPhone, any tips??

I think I got the pic figured out

Birds are still around in very good numbers, a 50:50 mix of males and big females. Two man limit today in a 4 hour hunt, lost track of flushes but I would say over 30 for sure...great day to be out!

Flushed one bird in the Brantford area today walking to my deer stand.
Hunted oxford county today. 3 miles. Only put up 2.
If you can hunt combined corn fields give that a try.
I bet I flushed 20-50 woodcock with my truck driving across a cut corn field the other day.

I moved 8 or 9 on Saturday, so they're still around
Put three up this morning while walking to the duck blind. Looks like there still hanging around.
dogs pointed 2 today in Vaughan on a regular walk
Yeah, I moved one today while hunting pheasants. They are still around.
Well went 2-3 today on woodcock while grouse hunting. Looks like there’s still some moving through.
flushed 2 today around Newmarket and 1-2 every day of the week in the subdivision
That’s great, glad to hear there are still a few around here and there in certain areas. In my last two outings, yesterday and last Wednesday, I haven’t seen any in the areas that I hunt north of Barrie.
Overall I’d have to say it is was a great woodcock season, saw a good amount of birds on a consistent basis, with the big flights coming the last 5-6 days in October.

Had 2 pointed at Hullett yesterday. Even a decent amount of splash in a couple spots. I'd imagine they left last night...
