Its a shyte show for employers. We have people who are calling in sick half the week and very likely claiming CERB as they are keeping their paycheck below the threshold for CERB entitlement. Attendance infractions through the roof ever since we returned to work, hard to motivate people to work when theres so much unregulated free cheese being tossed to everyone with their hands out.

They need to do a better job determining who needs CERB and who doesn't. My neighbours on a fixed income who didnt have any money to put towards a fence last year just built massive garden boxes and renovated their back yard a few weeks ago, obviously CERB money paying for it. Neighbours all around us upgrading things all at the same time and in the middle of a pandemic....hmmm.....

People I know who were unemployed/houseless/no real bills to pay before covid hit got the same payout as myself who has a house, a pregnant wife at the time and 2 young growing boys and I was laid off. Not really fair to see them get the same amount and blow it on partying and luxury items and myself being the responsible one barely had enough for diapers and formula, every penny was accounted for and I had to dig into a loan to keep afloat for 2 months. Very difficult to live off 500 a week in my circumstances.

I've heard plenty of people (more than I would expect) who volunteered themselves for layoff because CERB was high enough to justify a paid vacation. Mostly because of reduced work hours shrinking their income.

this should not come as a surprise to anyone...trudeau just buying votes, handing out $$ like confetti, lull everyone into a sense of security..

Sorry to hear DW that the pandemic has hit your family so hard, but good to hear that the taxpayers were able to a least soften the blow. Yours is an example of the scenario that the financial aid was designed to help.

What sickens me, that there are so many claimants that have 'stolen' the money thru subterfuge from the taxpayers. I guess they didn't realize that their SIN links them to the crime and the CRA is unrelenting. This could hurt them for many years to come.

How will they get the money back ? Can’t get blood from a stone !!

Do we really think that the Liberal government (or any for that matter) is going to claw that money back and alienate all those people ? It would not be a stretch to estimate a high percentage of them as Liberal/NDP voters.

What will happen is has always happened, those that are working will be forced to pay for those who won’t. And on it goes.

There are similar fraudulent issues with the wage subsidy and other relief programs - anyone with a registered company would have taken advantage of the $40k interest free loans which included $10k forgivable.

The kids will pay.

I was listening to the radio program last night they were talking about this.

Many people on assisted living took it and now they have nothing. Some provinces are trying to get it back others are letting them keep it .

One of the stories an older lady .

"Her friend asked if she had gotten the covid money . She was told everyone is getting it she applied because it was so easy . She redid her house with new furniture as the other stuff was old. . "

Well the government cut her off her assisted living pay. There are so Many other stories.

As Mike posted plenty of it went into beefing up the gang turfs . Free guns for all the bangers lol.

It's going to be a nightmare trying to get much of it back.

I guess Maybe the wealthy ones can pay it back they didn't need it to begin with [emoji6]. Chump change to some who took it.

I believe you needed to submit your 2019 taxes before you qualified for CERB. I have heard of people getting around this but it was just a rumor (I have no definitive proof).

I know guys that were hit pretty hard because of COVID and this assistance was needed and well deserved. There will always be cases of abuse of the system (I know personally of a couple), and take comfort that the CRA will hone their craft and go after them for their money (plus interest) back. They owe that to the taxpayers. As it is there are a lot of people that do not feel confident of how the Gov't will pay for the COVID party - increased sales tax (15% to 18%), a new COVID tax, or some other creative income revenue stream. If taxes go up I believe that this will just lead to a larger and more advanced underground economy. As it is now I minimize cash side jobs to stay under the radar but in the last 4 jobs did we were offered cash payment in return of tax relief.

I know two guys that would qualify for the interest free business loans - borrow up to $40k interest free until December 31st 2022 with relief of up to 25% ($10k). Two farmers said no to this - even the free $10k out of principle. One of my partners opted for the loan and bought a much needed bucket truck that allowed him to diversify his electrical business. I have no problems what so ever with this either.

My issue is the CERB is not geared to your income. If you are an electrician making $100-$110k/year you will get the same as a someone who works in retail or waiting tables. This summer I heard of more businesses that could not find people to work because they could stay home and collect CERB and are perfectly content doing such. Now many of these people are in for a rude awakening when they get their 2020 tax bill. Again........I hope the CRA stay diligent on this to minimize our huge debt.

That's likely to exceeed a million people when all is said and done. Imagine only ONE rule to get a check and they still screwed it up.

The problem...hopefully the CRA will act well before the next election so the sitting government, who's responsible, can do the dirty and charging them with fraud...that will go over well with voters :)

I am pretty confident the CRA is going to go after these folks who have abused the system. They do have a snitch line and it does not take to much to start an investigation.

What a heck of a mess the CERB program has created. The intend was right, but the execution of the program by the sitting government is a massive cluster fuque.

What a horror story created by not proper vetting claimants. Too eager to look like they were doing something and throwing caution to the wind. The Village Idiot was even warned that was going to happen but he overroad those concerns.

Well the wife and I can't even apply even if we both lose our jobs.

As it is now I go home for about a day and a half to two days, then back to work. There are more and more shipments where dispatch doesn't say this is your appointment time, it's when can you get it there. In the last six months I have run eight loads that saw me driving 4,300 Km in 48 to 52 hours...California to Mississauga. That is normally a four to four and a half day trip.

Medical supplies move. I slept only six to eight hours in those two days.

Back in March I was given Two letters by my company. The first is to show police so I can get to and from work in the event of a 110% lock down. The second Says the HOS( Hours Of Service) Regulations do NOT apply to me when doing runs with things like medical supplies.

My company has put in showers and laundry machines, because there was talk of Suquestering Drivers at the terminal.

Essential works may have job security but it's going to put a lot of us in the nut house, Divorce court, and possibly a grave.

Why am I telling you this?

Well as I am working to "Save the world":rolleyes: out here on the road, it's been summer vacation for the last 9 nine months, with people driving everywhere. The "Relief" checks go in the bank automatically and they just drive around a make withdrawal as they need them..

I think there is a whole cohort of Canadians like me who are now retired and are in pretty good shape,at least good enough to work part time that could be helping out in the economy.

But the rub is there is a disincentive to actually get out of the home and work. If any one of us decide to work there is an automatic claw back on Old Age Security where you are over a threshold and you set yourself back a few years to re qualify.

A new government should see if they could utilize baby boomers,have them work part time but not be financially penalized.

Pensioners got a token cheque for $300 while working people got CERB. There are going to be 1,000s of these type stories due to the incompetence of a sitting Government that couldn't even give away money properly.

I sure hope that they get to stay in power for the next year and suffer the public wrath as they try to recover all our tax money.

I say take it from the big companies the governments have not shut down in the first or second lockdown and keep funneling people towards. You know, the safest places to shop like Walmart, Sobeys etc. but dont dare go into those filthy covid filled small businesses that are shuttering their doors. If they could look at year to year profits for each of those companies and claw it back from them based on their annual projections in 2019 for 2020, all the record profits should have to be given back, let them keep normal profits + 10% or something and the rest should go back to the government...you know..for further mismanagement [emoji38][emoji38][emoji38]

How does a person create 700 social security numbers for non-existent people??? Was that a total system melt down?

So she applied and received from the taxpayers over $18K in a Covid Emergency Benefits . Probably more than 3x what she would have made in a normal year.

Rightly so, the CRA says "Hey, give it back". Now she screaming to the press that it's unfair...

You get $18K to cover the loss of $5k during Covid lockdown and you don't think you should pay it back..some folks really think they're entitled.

Not to mention...her business is take out from her home....it's a part time job for her, no employees lost their jobs.

I really think they are looking at CERB as a social experiment to pave the way for a basic income program. The issue, the way I see it is, is that people want a basic income but they do not want to live a basic life. I'd feel better about keeping them in EI and offering them free education and free training to break the cycle of poverty. Throwing money at the issue does not fix anything it just creates another problem.

Your right, the socialist have been wanting to do this for some time. They think that these 'poor' people will spend their (our) money and stimulate the economy. Problem is they shop primarily at Costco and Walmart....so other than a few retail jobs, none of the money stays in Canada and there is no stimulation, just people spending money, they didn't earn, on new TV.s

It has been transitioned to the E.I. dept now, so some of the waste will be eliminated...like paying the Cake lady $18k because she might loose some of her $5 k income...

I can only imagine how many of the 800,000 receipts have similar stories.

The CRA added that so far 995,000 CERB payments have already been repaid through their online portal.

“The CRA is sympathetic to the fact that, for some individuals, repayment of these amount may have financial implications,” the statement read. “Individuals who cannot make a payment in full are advised to contact the CRA to make a payment arrangement.”

Last month, the CRA sent 213,000 letters to Canadians who may have received two CERB payments instead of just the one. The most recent letters are “distinctly different” from the ones sent in November, however the CRA said it’s possible some CERB recipients will have received both.

Wait, what you are talking about there was what Mike Harris developed, a system of "work for welfare". That is considered cruel and unusual punishment. Why should you have to better your life or do something for the community to get societies money.

This is not a millennial problem, had an argument with a woman this summer who is in her 50s who believed that everything should be paid for by the government because she deserves it. She has no savings, no equity, no job and does not believe she should have to do anything to pay for the services or support she wants to get. She also does not believe she should have to pay any taxes because she put in enough time over her lifetime.

She thought she qualified based on gross, but has been notified by CRA that she does not based on net. She collected 18,500 to replace her lost 4-5k income. She couldn't see anything wrong with what she did and blames CRA - apparently the word "net" was only added to the CRA wording for CERB elegibility on April 21. But still, I'm really having trouble feeling sorry for her.

That's making the rounds, and I think the same lady Mike is referencing.
For me, it would boil down to what her hubby made in 2019. As I tend to think of "households".

So she personally cashed in large, abused the system and netted say an extra 12k.
Maybe her husbands income this year is -20k and as a result they are barely paying the bills.

No doubt there are also households out there, where in 2019 the couple grossed $160,000.
One never lost their job or hours and for 2020 will gross 120,000. The other claimed CERB and collected 18,000.
Net 2020 household income 138,000. Here's a violin.

Households with 3 or more people in workforce. Aka adult children living at home.
$6,000 per month collected. I've heard stories of households getting 8 and 10k
