    Question retail question.

Hello all, some of you may know i got an overnight position at a home depot about 6ish months ago. i was asked about taking a receiving job a couple of weeks ago and told them i would take it if they could possibly match my premium pay for working overnight shifts.

today i was suppose to get an answer but i got something else back from the store manager instead. they communicated to me that they think i work very well and want to know if i want to work with the overnight manager to learn more about the store and processes that go on with the manager sides of things. i get along well with my managers. i know one of them may be going back to the military (part time)

but now im a little confused to be honest lol. they never told me what i would be learning exactly, or what position i would be able to apply for later on. i also guess the reviving position is off the table now? (guess they didnt want to match my overnight pay but wasnt told that directly)
i did communicate to them i would rather not work when customers are in the store which is why i was thinking about the receiving position.

im not sure if they want to train me to be a manager or what to be honest. ive only been at the store maybe 6 months in total and im under part time status even tho i work 40 hour weeks, ive asked for fulltime and thats when i was offered the receiving position.

the other weird thing is there's another employee whos been there 6 years, hes been a day manager and has all that training. so if one of the managers are on the way out wouldnt it be in their best interest to promote him to manager if he wanted it?

i dont want to get my hopes up for nothing, but im kinda confused about the situation.

if anyone has any insight it would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance

if you stuck around this long i appreciate you reading my little rant haha.

Some of these retail stores still play games with staffing. You may stand to earn more as a part-timer with a shift premium and working overtime. They prefer to put you on salary, cheaper in the long run and then work the crap out of ya.

Full benefits are also a carrot...see what they are offering and then look to see if it is really a better deal than what you have with part-time flexibility. I know with nurses, a lot opt to stay part-time and work full time hours.

The other fella you mentioned may NOT want the 'night' manager shift...family/girlfriend commitments etc etc.

Also the reason you may have been offered this, not taking away from your performance, but because you're willing to work the night shift and have a good attendance record...a rare employee find indeed these days

Have you spoken directly to the store manager ? I’d do that, to see exactly what was offered, and go from there. IMO, any job training is a good thing, providing you like being there…

appreciate the response mike, 100% they love to play games forsure, i take medication and i would love to have a set schedule which is the main reason i want fulltime and full benefits. i guess well see what happens in the long run. if i can get a manger position here within a year of working here itll do good for my resume and my work experience as a whole. ive also heard the quarterly bonuses the managers get is insane especially now during covid. our store has done over $20 million so far this year. more than any store in our district. funny thing is we are the smallest store around LOL

i did but she speaks a little to fast for me tbh haha. i did message my manger and he basically said if i want to move up with the company he can show me how things are done with his side of things, and if no positions are available he would absolutely put in a good word for me and help me move up even if i had to transfer stores. (which isnt my first choice as i work literally 5 minutes away from my house at the moment lol)

i know they love the way i work because i know for a fact i do more than anyone else there my managers literally tell me to relax sometimes LOL (not trying to toot my own horn but its true) and as mike said good attendance etc.

i guess they want me to be ready for if and when a position does become available ?

LOL MIKE YOURE NOT LYING THERE HAHA. 90$ a sheet adds up fast!

As a side note, some people don't know, you can get Health Care coverage etc for yourself thru companies like SunLife for about $125 a month.

Sounds like they need a super hard worker, and it also sounds like you fit the bill. Good, young, dedicated hard workers are hard to find these these, and when one does show up.....I'm assuming they have taken notice, and want to have you use your full potential...my advice is, you're probably a rare find as of late, and if they want to benefit from you....keep most of your cards hidden at first....you may not know how bad they actually want you to run the show at night. Don't let it get to your head (you don't sound like that type)...but write down your "I must haves"...and your "would be nice to haves".....good luck bud......you sound like a hard worker.........
    This isn't a test run................Enjoy er'.......

    appreciate the words!

will deff write down some things, trust me i wont let them take advantage without burning their pockets a little lol!

its funny though. alot of the guys have a "why are you working so hard" attitude about them, couple of them try and hide or walk around all night without doing anything as well thinking no ones gunna notice.

theres only 5 people in the store. someone's gunna notice you're not doing squat LOL.

i was asked the other day why i choose all the heavier things to do all night. my response was im being paid to workout all night.

not to mention when your co workers aren't doing much its way easier to be noticed.
