Utility Trailer Question

I've owned a few non branded trailers, and none of them needed a VIN assigned. Granted, they were all single axle utility trailers. My current is a custom 5x16 single axle atv trailer. I do recall a conversation I had in the last year or so about trailer licensing, and if I recall, the MTO was going to start assigning a VIN to home made trailers. This person was going to go to the MTO and get an extra plate and ownership made up for a trailer that didn't exist, just to have around so that he could put it on any non branded trailer he owned in the future. Other than mention of the color, there wasn't any info to distinguish one home made trailer from another on the ownership, so the intent was to use the same plate and ownership for any trailers he may build without having pay the MTO each time.

You got me thinking greatwhite. Perhaps small light duty home made trailers don't require a VIN. I'd have to look it up.

Sold my homemade 6.5x12 last July and bought a 4x8 homemade with no vins. The MTO should get onboard making vin mandatory cuz they are losing a lot of tax dollars on the sale of these used trailers. Kinda like the way the PCV, PVA and TTA once worked.

Yeah, it doesn't make any sense. There should be something required to identify a vehicle.

On MikePal's registration it "appears" that they did assign a VIN, however if it's not required to be on the trailer it doesn't help much.

So the magic number for when a trailer requires a VIN is 1360 kg, if that can be determined.

That begs the question, who assigns the GVWR on a home built trailer ? I guess you wouldn't attract any attention unless your trailer was obviously over weight. I would think a dual axle trailer would attract some attention.

The funny thing is there's nothing saying the GVWR is required, so with no manufacturers sticker, unless your actual weights exceed 4500 kg's, you're good to go.

Well, it appears I have a small New Years project, take the manufactures sticker of the trailers and get new ownerships created for home made trailers.

So just got back from the Vehicle registration asking about registering a home made trailer. As long as the weight of the trailer is under 901 Kg (1986.36 Pounds). We found a trailer that use to be used for hauling equipment for Hydro. Were going to cut off all the metal sides and compartments and roof that are on it haven't decided about the floor. Will probably make the side railings under 2 ft.
