    Default 12GA Sabots - suggestions

I have a new gun (Beretta 391 with cantilever rifled slug barrel) and want to try a couple of different brands of sabots to see what it likes. My other slug gun (Benelli Super Nova) liked the 2-3/4" Winchester Super X Rifled Slug........it was inexpensive and it worked! Now from what I have seen there are over 8 different brands available in both 2-3/4' and 3". As much as I would like to say I am open to trying anything..........but spending $300 just to find the sabot that your gun likes is a little much for my wallet to handle.

What would you recommend as far as shell size........2-3/4" or 3"? I would like to narrow this down first and then pick a couple of brands to test.

I was looking at the following sabots but I am realistically looking at trying 2 or 3 different ones and pick the best and run with them.

    Hornady SST (300grain)
    Winchester XP3 (300grain)
    Federal Trophy Copper (300grain)

    Remington Copper Solid (1oz)
    Remington Accutip (385grain)
    Winchester Partition Gold (385grain)
    Winchester Dual Bond (375grain)
    Federal Fusion (7/8oz)

I know different slugs pattern differently in different guns but I am just looking for a quality sabot as a good starting point. My initial three are Rem Accutips, Winchester Dual Bond, & Hornady SST's......any ideas, suggestions or comments?

    Thanks,

    John

I use the 300 gr Hornady SST 2 3/4" in my Rem 870 with a rifled cantilever barrel. They shoot fairly well. Lately though, I am finding saboted slugs to be too expensive. I've started to try the Winchester Rackmasters. They are way cheaper and their performance in terms of precision is pretty good. They are worth a try.

I found best groups with my 870 cantilever barrel were with the accutips. Tried hornady and challengers as well.

I would try the Copper solids first, they seem to shoot well out of most guns. Next I would go with the Partition golds. Just my .02 cts.

Remington Accutip in my 870 open sights were good enough to demolish a tin can 3 times in a row from 50 yards. Had more than enough power to take my buck this year at 30 yards. I wont use anything else now.

I'll second this comment. About the cheapest 12 gauge sabot going and they kill deer just fine.

I have watched guys struggle at the bench trying to get decent groups out of Partition Golds (which I've never seen a single gun group well with), as well as other high-end slugs, only to be surprised that the cheap-o Federals shoot so well.

Try at least 3 different kinds. Try shells in the 1900fps,1700 and 1500 range to see what groups best. Keep the barrel clean as well.
