They will replace plates more than five years old that are pealing. According to this article plates acquired after June 1, 2008.

Earlier this year, Service Ontario replaced mine for free. They were purchased in June 2008 and the clerk mentioned I was lucky because I snuck in just under the deadline by a few days.

My plates are over 15 years old and no problem with any thing. Even if I had to buy a new set it's only 30 bucks per vehicle for me and the wife.
Take the warning labels off. Darwin will solve the problem.

There was a window of bad plates, I think they all started with a B, I had a set on my car and when I went to pay all my fees this spring took them off as they were just starting to peel 4 years in, might as well get them when they are free and put the $30 into gas.

Both the wife's and my plates start with "V" and only one person in the province is allowed to have them. They where not even made till I ordered them. By that I mean my wife is the only person that can have her plate and I am the only one allowed to have my plate. So even if the plate was not attached to a vehicle another person can still not order or use them.
You may have noticed I remove the plates from photos I post.
I was simply saying that my plates are over 15 years old and are in great shape. A contrast to the ones that are peeling and at this point having to pay for new plates would not be that bad, they only cost me $2 a year over the 15 years. I spend more then that on timmies in a day

So what does that prove ??? my plates are even much older than yours, which proves absolutely nothing, zero , zip , so are my wife's.
If you go back to the early 90's, many truck [pickup] license plates started with V, today I see off road farm vehicles 4x4's gators etc. with plates starting with V.
Also Ham Radio Operators have license plates that start with V , followed by #3 ie; V3 ------

Not proving anything other then the defective plates are crap, and saying the plates on my vehicle get cheaper the longer they last.

There is a recall on a bad batch of plates that start with a B, it was a period of time that they produced them. Our trucks plate is just a little newer and no problems, my old car and SUV never had any issues, it was a bad batch and there was a recall on them but there is a deadline of 5 years for the recall.
I laugh my butt off when people claim that they will not be charged for a peeled and invisible plate, really? You think that because it was the fault of the plate that you get away with not having visible registration?
