Cutting dovetails for sights
200 years ago a gunsmith would use files and chisels to do this work. Today, most dovetails are cut using a milling machine which I do not have, so-o-o-o-o, a hacksaw, files and a boat load of patience and concentration is what I use.

Those are still the first tools you will handle when learning to machine, still just as important a skill today as they ever were when it comes to metalwork.

The first week I worked in a machine shop I spent 40 hrs.broaching key ways and sharpening drill bits with a file.
