What I find interesting is that Stanley made no self-defence arguments, instead claiming that the shooting was entirely accidental -- yet his supporters universally justify the shooting as self defence.
Seems to me the subtext is, nobody believes it was an accident.

I can still find the loading recipe for 12 gauge rock salt in the back of one of my manuals...
