People can be taught to deal with life, they just have to be given the tools.

That is a fact verified by many psychologists, but many are just too bull headed [ that macho image ] to admit that it does cause problems with quite a few at an early age.

A psychologist will tell you many things. Technically the whole human population is nuts and I think if you look you will find many psychologist seek help from psychologists.

I was bullied in grade 1 and 2 than again in grade 8 and again in grade 9. In grade 9 I was even made fun of by most of the teachers. I know quite a bit about being bullied and so do my kids.

GW...sorry bullying was an issue for you, it should not happen to you nor anyone else. However I totally disagree with your statement that schools encourage bullying......what possible support could you have for that statement?

I have to disagree I will tell you a few quick stories in Ottawa there have been 3 cases that actually made the news where the child being bullied was told they should relocate to another school.

When my eldest son was in grade 9 I got a call from the school he was being suspended for one day. I asked what happened and the Principal told me he had hit a student and started a fight and they didn't tell me anymore. So when he got home and called me at work I asked what the heck was going on. So what had happened was the top school bully was breaking into a kids locker and that kid locker was the most bullied kid at the school. My son had asked the bully to stop and get away from the locker, the bully grabbed my son around the neck so my son punched him in the face and put him down. I called back the school to find out why they didn't tell me that part. I was told it was school policy. I told them my son would be only punished because he didn't hit this guy 3 times. I also warned the school board that if anyone attacks my kid and he feels he can take them then he can do to them as he see`s fit. I also told them my son would be in school the next day and would not be suspended or they would be speaking to my lawyer at their expense.

Yes schools do protect bullies! This has been shown in the city of Ottawa over and over again.

GW as I've said no one should be subject to bullying and sorry your boy has had that happen. No doubt we should teach our kids to stand up for themselves at a certain point, we should also teach them who to seek out for assistance as opposed to taking on a role in this.
As for suspensions I suggest you read the Education Act especially the section on appealing suspensions .

Hear Hear..my daughter was always a 'tom boy', started playing boys hockey when she was 7 long before there was any girls hockey. She was a tough kid. In the 6th grade some bully from the 8th grade set his sights on her and was made the mistake of pushing her to far. She beat the crap out of him in the school yard in front of the rest of the school. He's a local boy and still hasn't lived it down..beaten up by a girl two grades below him..

She was never bothered again in school, her rep held her straight through high school. ...and that is the way is should be...it's the way kids used to grow up.

We had to go in, but it was a formality, enough witnesses saw it happen etc. Back then there was no mandatory suspensions, counseling session or any of that crap. Teachers and Parents get far to involved in their kids lives nowadays and kids don't learn how to cope with life on their own. We have far to many snowflakes being 'offended' by far too much.

I think social media is so much part of their lives, kids are exposed to name calling daily, they become thick skinned and it doesn't affected them like it used to affect us.

As a teacher, I never tolerated bullying happening for one minute. I dealt with it no matter what was needed to be done.

My brother(14) was in a wheelchair. Someone one in high school was bullying him - pouring milk down his neck etc.-He was crying in bed one night and his younger brother(13) asked him what was wrong. Next day the younger brother showed up at the older brother's high school and gave the bully a good beating. When he got back to his high school , the police were there. When the Police heard the story , they said, "Well next time call us." and that was the end of it.
