Clearly I have no idea what it is like to hunt in the bush.

There are situations where it would not work well but for 90% of situations hunters are easily within a quick drive to a phone if there is no home phone or cell phone.

Situations where I could see this being impractical would be mainly moose hunting in the far north, hunting from the Soo would not hurt that, hunting moose near Kapuskasing (where part of my family is from) is also no longer a problem, heck, the cell coverage runs 10 miles from the highway.

I can see it in most cases where the moose hunter would have no problem going for a rip after the moose is out of the bush to go call in to a toll free number about the animal harvested and probably brag a bit for their kill.

We had a mandatory check in system for wild turkeys for years followed by a phone in system that is currently in place, for the vast majority of the province this system would work very well and give some actual real time data as to the harvest numbers as nobody will claim they tagged an animal during the season when they have not, something that can happen with the current harvest survey at the end of the year.

Nope, but you know what I mean.

Tested on the good old boys down south does not mean that the guys around our parts will stop.

I think there are poachers, then honest people and also a group of people who do what is legal simply because they fear they will get caught. This group is the group that may sway to poaching with the rule changes. How large that group is depends a lot on the area in the province and how they were brought up.

Were we hunt Moose we are 120 miles from a cell area, and I am not driving 120 there and 120 back to call.
Unless like last year it got to warm to hang the moose, and we had to drive it to Thunder Bay and have it butchered.

IIRC, the actual reporting of the kill is pretty lax, so no rushing 120 miles to a phone.

You hunt 120 miles from a phone? There are still public phones around in Ontario.

Like I said, for 90%+ of the big game harvests you should be able to call it in within an hour or two.

Many US states have mandatory check ins of the entire animal, why would it be a problem to call it in, pay phones do still exist and a toll free number reduces your need for change.
