Just so first timers don't get caught, the "weekdays" the Long Point Unit is open are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays only!

All is correct with what BenJhind said except picks goes as follows:
    1st pick = Lineup car #1
    2nd pick = Lineup car #2
    3rd pick = Reservation #1
    4th pick = Lineup car #3
    5th pick = Reservation #2
    6th Pick = Lineup car #4,

Picks continue from there. Reservation has to be in at least 2 weeks before the hunt day. You are then notified my email. If you use the reservation system, an extra fee is involved if you are successful.

As well last years water levels were 14" higher than usual. Some of the walk out blinds were not able to be accessed by foot.

As suggested, be sure to visit the marsh before hunting season if you can. even better, go on "camo" day to help cover blinds, and meet some folks, and get to know the marsh a little better.

Sorry to dig up this old thread but I was hoping for an update.

I have never hunted at long point, but I have access to a cottage right there, and I really want to give it a shot. I went up to the park entrance yesterday, and the gate was open, but a sign read that the park was closed. Does this mean you can still use the boat launch to get to the blinds or not? Is there a map pf the blinds available? Is there any other info you can offer a guy who is new to this area?

Go past the gate, take the first right and it will take you to the waterfowl office. Only open mon/wed/fri/sat. They will have all the info you need there.

"Learning Long Point" is an ongoing activity. It seems to never end.

With that said, if the weather's right and they have the proper advice, I think anytime's a great time to start.

Sprite ; I've been hunting here all my life and December is not a good time to send a Newbie out by themselves. Fine if they have a guy who knows the Point with them and their rig is up to it but advising greenhorns to "go fer it" is not sage advice. I've already given the same advice on the local Long Point website and will not be parcel to giving bad advice. Yes, yes ...I know there is always inherent risk to our sport but it is as I said.

I have not hunted the unit for 3 years now. When I did hunt it my buddy had a trailer there every season and I hunted it 2x a week and it was a lot of fun.......and a lot of work. A small boat is almost required but a canoe will work for solo hunts - but by the time you throw in gun, bag, lunch, 3 dozen decoys and a couple of robo's you are tight!

Many stories of mechanical breakdowns and getting lost in the morning darkness trying to find that F&*(^ blind! The walkouts are great for beginners as it gives them a chance to experience waterfowl without needing a boat and a pile of decoys. The guys at the unit area great with sharing information - calling, decoy layout, wind and weather conditions. I would suggest giving it a try in early season (Oct/Nov) as December can be somewhat dangerous when dealing with small boats and canoes. Try a walk in blind or some easy to find blinds in the inner bay or down Big Creek.

I always found that weekdays are good to hunt (conditions pending). The draw is OK but I suggest showing up early (2AM or 3AM) or even the night before and finding a place to sleep will put you in a better situation for a blind pick.

Not sure how the unit is doing but I heard that '18 & '19 was not that great mainly due to lack of bird numbers.
