I've harvested 5 deer, all with 00 buckshot, all immediately ethically downed within 15-25yrds. Nothing about archery arrows or bolts being banned? I've heard stories on the news about a live deer walking around with an arrow in the head? If someone takes an unethical risky shot out of range, is it the slug/buckshot's/arrow's fault? NO!

I find it hard to believe that a busy custom combine operator takes the time to autopsy all of the deer he finds in the fields and that the coyotes don't eat any of them.

There is a farmer down around Startford I was chatting with during a hunt one year, he has stopped to take a number of deer from the field to the fence row or bush when combining, he suspected that they were all hit by cars, broken legs, hips, no controlled hunt early enough in that area for them to be shot during a legal hunt.

There are a ton of assumptions and very little factual verification going on here. Controlled hunts are made up ethical careful hunters and a lot of “one week wonders” who can’t shoot and dust off the old gun once a year. These same people wound tons of deer with buckshot, slugs, and muzzle loaders. Can’t just say “ban buckshot”. I’ve killed several deer cleanly with buckshot. I have lost a few with slugs, so unless you are perfect, be careful about being too quick to point fingers.

Pretty sure the OP has claimed to have never lost a deer, so that would make him perfect I guess. It doesn’t explain why he’s echoing a combiner’s opinion though.

Here’s my problem with his opinion. If you’ve had the opportunity to track a wounded deer in the standing corn, you would know that retrieving fatally shot deer in standing corn is the easiest terrain to track and recover a deer in.

The soil is usually always soft for seeing tracks, no debris on the ground hiding blood drops.

The corn stocks will constantly agitate the wound, causing increased blood sign that can be easily spotted on the stocks while tracking.

I've killed 2 deer over the years that deliberately ran through the corn after the shot and I believe they only ran that way because they were in the corn and I was on the edge when I hit them.

One was a gut shot deer, I had to finish it off in the corn after waiting 4 hours for it to get too weak to flee. (the most successful way to recover a gut shot deer with a bow imo)

The other was a shoulder shot where the deer was able to get across the cornfield and drop 50 yards out of the corn on the other side. The ease as to tracking inside the corn as compared to outside the corn, was night and day.


It's been my experience that a wounded deer will avoid corn if they know they're being followed.

This story has to do with tracking ability not buckshot. I call the whole story BS.

Exactly. See/hear this way too often. Dogging deer and buckshot ends up wounding a ton of deer which are never recovered! SINGLE PROJECTILE!

Absolutely, I've commented before that buckshot should be banned. But there are guys that will argue, in favour of ssgs. Why, I don't know.

Can we also then ban the shooting of slugs through smooth bores with no sight system and no knowledge of POI relative to POA? And archery shots over 30 yards. And running shots on big game, and the list goes on..... You can't legislate ethical or responsible behavior.
