They were in about a 8" pattern not deep enough to destroy meat and the hide had healed over. I'm not sure how this could happen unless someone took a long distance shot or a load they were using was weak. I've not seen anything like that, since. Weird for sure. I like using sabot slugs rather than buck shot. With sabot slugs and a rifled barrel inside 50 yds,if you hit the deer in the vitals, they go down fairly quickly. If there's any doubt,at all,I just won't take the shot.
Years ago I arrowed a big 8. He had one eye shot out, a 00 buckshot in his neck up against the spine close to his scull, and on pellet in his neck lower down, and one pellet that was flattened out on his snout beneath the hide. All were obviously from the previous year or longer. Good thing though because he came in on his blind side...

If you shoot max 30 yards you will kill the deer with buckshot. Plain and simple.

As far as buckshot holes not visible unless the deer is skinned.....well, that’s the problem, very little blood trail with a lethal hit. I’ve seen deer hit with very little blood, only a drop or two, and because the hunter was experienced tracker, recovered it over 300 yds away. One pellet in the lung.
Most guys would have given up on the recovery. Any slug wounds are obviously very large with heavy blood loss.
But then, I can only go by personal experience in actual hunting scenarios, as opposed to shooting at a target !!
I don’t disagree with you Rick about they being tough to track. When I refer to less meat loss, I speak from my application of buckshot. I shoot for head and neck at close range and when hit, they go right down. Rear hits or shoulder hits by slugs I have shot were devastating to the deer and the meat yield. I still use them depending on the application however. Know your weapon, know it’s best application, be safe and responsible. Glad your buddy made that long recovery.

The problem as I see it is that Jaycee actually believes the story and will print it as factual, just like he believes 00Buck is a good back up round for killing a wounded African Lion, because its on some African Safaris web sites. The same info is available on other websites that hunting a wounded African Lion with 00 Buck is a very bad idea. But that is not going to change his mind,so on one hand he is mad at hunters using 00 Buck on small Whitailed Deer, but thinks is perfectly normal to use it to finish of a wounded and very dangerous African Lion.Talk about common sense going out the window.[/QUOTE]

I believe in people that have never lied to me, you on the other hand???

Head shots with buckshot is a recipe for disaster. Your big 8 proves that.
