It's a FireArms/Ammo forum..and shooting and hunting are synonymous...bullets are designed to kill.

You are right Mike- in rifle calibers then the sequence of top sales(based on the list of 91)is : 223-308-7.62x39 - 30-06.

I have yet to hear /see someone hunting with 7.62x39 or doing any serious target shooting(mass plinking yes),but i may be mistaken.
Cheap Chinese guns and Russian ammo makes this cal go so high on the list.But-for sure, it is on it, high up.

But it does have limitations because a caliber capable of doing all things exceptionally well is an act of fiction. It is very good at a lot of things, but there are just some hurdles it can’t get over cleanly.
Short excerpt form the 6.5 mm Creedmore author.I think with the sentence as above the author pretty much showed "true colors " about the .308.

For the author-any Cal capable of doing things exceptionally well: except 6.5 mm Creedmore(after all-the article is about that Cal)is an act of fiction.
The author does not say that as clearly as I do-but it is the underlying message of the article as a whole.


I do not own neither a 308 nor have intention to buy A 6,5 Creedmore rifle.

In the states the 7.62x39 is way more than cheap Chinese and Russian guns/ammo. The fact that you can use an AR platform and run this cartridge with pretty good accuracy has made it a decent deer, hog and varmint round in many places. The ruger mini thirty is another one that is a commercial gun chambered in 7.62x39. There are also a number of bolt action guns chambered in this cartridge, yes the majority of the rounds are shot for fun but so is the 308 and 223, both NATO rounds, cheap and easy to find.

For the 7.62x39 there a number of commercial loads, up to 150gr, and they can be very accurate in bolt guns and the AR platform.

Americans never embraced European Ammunition ( ie: #41 .303) so not surprised at the 6.5 being near the bottom of the list. The fervor with the 6.45 CM has seen a rise up in it's popularity ( 13% increase in sales over past few years) showing it's becoming more main stream.

No need ... for so many calibers and different cases ...
But they are sellable ... so they driving the economy...
In north America the trend is make money spend money
throw out what you bought with the money as soon as possible .....
Go work hard to make money .... and the circle is closed .... and start again
I am not saying that new thinks not lightening up our days ....
But if we would own less and thinks last longer ...
Will have more time and money to take a vacation , and focus more on health ....
Spend time in the wilderness , on hunting trips ...

Not exactly sure how you can draw any definite conclusions as to caliber popularity when using data for only a single month, especially since it is based on firearm sales, and not ammo sales. Get rid of the non rifle calibers, and the 270 moves up the list. Remember, thirty years ago no was buying Russian or Chinese SKS guns. Excluding the flavor of the month guns, I still see the 270 as one of the top 5 center fire rifles (others being the 223, 308, 30-06, 30-30)

For sure the .270. like the 308. 30-06....they have captured a 'market share'. But they are no longer the new kid on the block and lots of competition out there from manufactures to grasp the attention of new shooter/hunters.
