ROFL! That seems to be a standard joke among western outfitters and tourist guides who take citiots on "eco tours".
If a tree falls on your ex in the woods and nobody hears it,you should probably still get rid of your chainsaw. Just sayin'....

I was taking my wife and daughter camping in the Massassauga PP two weeks ago and I was at the boat launch holding on to my boat waiting for my one daughter to get back from parking the truck and trailer. The guy loading his canoe beside me was carrying his pack and I heard the jingle of a bell and I just smiled........I wanted so badly to ask where in Toronto he's from but I know my wife would have shot me that look. Not a good way to start a camping trip with the wife.

I would have asked, even if my wife hit me.

He is correct the bells are not a natural sound. They are more likely to make bears( or any predator ) more curious then scared. Also trying to be quiet makes you sound like prey, while crunching leaves and snapping twigs or branches makes it sound like you don't care. If you don't care....in the bears mind there is a good reason.
