My two pennies ...Rural men live their lives with a more practical views on euthanasia. The choice of laying in a hospital rotting away with cancer or sent to a Long Term Care facility to die a slow useless life can be solved thru suicide.

I don't know many locals that take a dog into the vet to be put down, it's far more natural in a rural area to do it yourself and since more rural people have access to firearms the choice is easier.

Back to Suicides, looking at the 2008 diagram firearms were less than 1/6 the total deaths and with the expected spike this year in the total it will likely be nasty to see.

Let's try small words again...
1) firearm suicides in general 1/6 total suicides. (in 2008 breakdown)
2) This year probably much higher number
3) Conditions to cause depression exacerbated by gov't decisions, lies and incompetence. (mental health help unavailable, isolation, debt, lies and fear mongering.... dark future)

or are you just saying like Elbowgate, SNC, Admiral Norman, WE ... don't hold them responsible for the decisions they make???

So you are blaming suicides by rural older men on the government. Look at the dates of the study. Cons. in power for much of it. Next.

From what I see in rural areas and I am living there at least six months of every year social isolation and depression play a big part in these death's. If you have nobody to talk to and share your problems you can lose hope. If your access to a family doctor or other health professionals is restricted who might recognize signs,this is another factor.

As one who has lived rural for at least 50 years of my 64, I can offer a few theories. As we get older, many people find that due to deteriorating health issues, relocating closer to medical services is almost a must? Generally, that means packing up, selling the place and giving up on the lifestyle they love. The lifestyle of the city, that they so hated, is staring them down and they don't like it! Faced with few options, a lot of folks just lose their spirit and give up. Throw into the mix, perhaps they've lost their spouse, or it may well be the spouse who needs to move closer to medical care? Either way, it can cause a person to lose their lust for life.
Personally, I just can't imagine myself faced with the situation of having to pack up and move, but i know it may happen at some point in the future as I get older. For now, I just enjoy what I have and where I'm doing it.
