Has too much time on their hands
I believe people need to get back to this lifestyle as best as possible. Apartment dwellings rule this out, however a real good book is called the 1/2 acre homestead. Is amazing what you can plant in a townhouse backyard, especially if you do companion planting.

My dad who passed away many years ago,may rest in peace, built a simple brick smoke house, not much different size and shape as an outhouse-of course ,it was ONLY for smoking meat.He would do all our meat, sausage etc, and neighbors too, with next to no training. He would salt cure the rest of the meat/hams/slabs of bacon.Heck-my MIL (and many others)would deep fry in pig lard pork chops, then place them in layers in a big storage pot-and pour over the very same ,hot lard. After solidifying, the meat would last for months..... winter-summer,regardless.It was really juicy with all that grease enveloping them great chops..........NO CHOLESTEROL was invented at that time.
What i am trying to say is-most of that old, simple, yet proven technique is still out there, old people, old books, some Internet adresses still have all that simple, ages old knowledege.Much of that is very very simple to learn and remember,if one wants to.
It is not a must to approach everything with high tech savvy.Especially not in survival situation.

I have had 2 chickens in my garage for 4 years. The egg production is way down because of their age. Started with 10-12 eggs a week , down to 2-3 between them. Can’t get rid of them because they are pets now. Silky Bantams very cute.

During the first lockdown, I was doing twice weekly posts on the local community page (110,000 members), how to's on all thing breads, home starter yeasts, rolls, buns, cookies, cinnamon rolls, cheese, smoker, homemade bacon, locks and homemade bagels with homemade cream cheese (ricotta). I would receive 1000's comments on basic cooking posts...more then any political post ever..got a little community award. I had 10 X 902gram packs of Red Star (Costco) yeast in the freezer to give out 250mil jars to people who couldn't get yeast during shortage. My worst skill which I am still working on is pie crust and flakey dough...the perfect consistent pie crust eludes me.
Bannock or pemmican I have made, and "can" the fats for this purpose. I find saved bacon tastes the best, but for long term storage rendered beef kidney fat last longer.
I still haven't set up my kitchen and cooking gear the way I would like in the new property. To many other projects on the go..but making split pea soup this weekend. I got the kitchen Sunday - my wife has it booked all day Saturday...lol for Christmas baking..so I will be pulling more electrical wire in basement instead.

Just bought a bag of flour and plan to make oatmeal bread from scratch (A family recipe) for my youngest as he doesn't remember his grandmother making it (She had a stroke when he was around 5 or 6).

I generally replace my chickens every 2 years, this year I could not because the place I wanted to buy from also went on lock down.
I usually give my chickens away as there is very little meat compared to raising meat hens and they are not worth my time to butcher them.
Currently I have 5 Americanas laying bluish green eggs and 5 Marans laying dark brown eggs. I had two Guinea fowl (the eggs are pretty cool very tough shell)
but they are in the freezer now. We use to call them Yummy and Tasty. Wife doesn't know where they are. In a few weeks my neighbor will be making a dinner from them. His family and mine. Only my son and him know. Will let everyone else know after dinner.

Both my parents are gone, but I enjoyed it when they would tell stories of their youth growing up in the 20's and during the depression. And stories my one grandmother would tell about cooking in the bush camps as a young woman during the early 1900's. One of the best stories was about how she was praised by the men in one camp she worked at, for making "pumpkin pie" from turnips. She said she'd make 20 pies at a time and many of the men eating it wouldn't know the difference until someone told them. Compare that to one of my nieces, who at 45 yrs of age admitted last year that she has never once even cooked a turkey? I think that's a typical story of many today? Sad actually.
Your bang-on the money. In a real breakdown most will starve and this is why.
